GMO Investigation Research: GMO Corn Grown In Mexico The Mexican government confirmed reports that GM corn was being grown in Mexico that ended up contaminating wild varieties/strains of corn (despite a national ban on GM crops). It was estimated that as mush as 95% of cornfields all around the country were affected, and as a result, this became of the most heated scientific and political dispute over whether or not GM corn is harming other types of corn. As Mexico is home of corn, many environmental groups and people were extremely concerned about the affects of GM crops on food security (export, and within Mexico), health problems, and crop biodiversity. The greatest levels of harm were near main roads and among areas close to the wild …show more content…
GM foods/biotechnology has not been around long enough for humans to understand the possible health concerns/implications of GMOs (may feel like they are being experimented on). Social For Against With this new supply/creation of GM technologies and products, many new agencies and corporations have been created in order to ensure that the food consumers are eating is healthy. There is a widespread concern about how GMOs/biotechnology can be used for planting higher yields of crops while protecting the environment and human health all at once (seems almost impossible to do). Environmental For Against GMO are allowing farmers to grow more crops without having to use (or buy) any additional land. Farmers are able to produce a higher yield of crops, food, plants, etc, which can be distrusted to stores at a faster rate. GMOs can be be toxic to non-target organisms such as bees which are extremely important for the pollination of food …show more content…
I disagree because first, GMO's are said to be create increase the content of allergies in our food, either creating new allergies or increasing the amount in our food and causing allergies of one food to contaminate other foods. I also disagree with the GMO's because they pose a risk to non-target organism such as bees; who are important for the pollination of our food corps. Many organism are dying and becoming endangered because of GMO's. Last, I disagree with the ownerships of GMO's because many countries agencies do not label their products. Thus people feel as is they are being lied to. Allowing companies to patent GMO's will result in a destructive path that harms environment, community and
GMOs, (genetically modified organisms) have been a topic of interest in the social eyes for years. Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Though there hasn’t been any evidence claiming whether GMOs are good or bad, it has certainly not stopped the public from creating their own opinions. Since no one knows the truth behind GMO, it has opened a window of opportunities for companies including Monsanto to voice their support of GMO, while other companies like the Non-GMO Project voice their
GMOs foods have lots of unknown factors coming into play. There are many questions to whether they are safe for us and the crops. GMOs foods have been connected to sterile and dead livestock, and damage to almost every organ studied in lab animals. Labeling might also be costing us more than necessary. Some say we should stop using GMOs altogether, but right now it’s difficult to see what choice has our best interests at heart.
Many will argue that Genetically Modified Organisms(GMOs) are not safe for human consumption, however they are almost inevitable for our everyday food consumption. Some argue that the recent increase in gluten intolerance is caused by GMO foods (Argument against). Other state that the risk to humans by GMO’s is relatively small (The GMO”). The bottom line is what people put into their bodies is a personal choice and a person should be able to easily tell if a product has been genetically modified or not.
GMO’s contain inherent health risks such as digestion issues, increased allergic reactions, and infertility. This should
Genetically modified crops are an incredibly important issue that everyone should be aware of since it is something we are exposed to at a daily basis. Genetically modified crops also known as GM crops or Biotech crops has been one of the most heated debates of issues within our society. The debate about the safety, concerns and disadvantages of GM crops have raged since the mid 1990 's but this is due to the lack of knowledge of the general public. Many people are unaware of what the GM crops actually are and what they offer. Genetically modified crops are plants that are used in the agriculture and have been modified to initiate a new trait to plants that does not happen naturally in the species. These plants are modified using genetic engineering techniques to enhance desired traits. GM crops are made when genes of commercial interest are transferred from one organism to another.() There are many methods used for the production of GM crops but the two primary used for plant insertion are gene guns and agrobacterium tumefaciens. There are also three types of modifications which are transgenic, cisgenic, and subgenic plants. However, there are a number of issues that surround this controversial topic such as environmental, health, and economic concerns. Even though there are some worrying facts about GM crops people don 't realize the advantages or the ways it has helped humans as well as animals. There are many reasons why GM crops are proven
Gmos are bad for the environment. Insects are at risk butterflies and bees and countless other bugs are being killed from these crops. Newer more stronger species are going to over run other species and will go extinct. GMOs are polluting are water resources. Animals are showing organ damage and other parts of the body being damaged. Humans are problems like nutritional consequences, unintended effects, and GM
In todays society, people are more concerned about what they put into their body. They eat healthy and maintain a stable diet, but unknown to a number of these people is their food may have been tampered with in the form of Genetically Modified Organisms or, for short, GMO's. Genetically Modified Organisms are plants or animals whose DNA has been altered to favor a certain characteristic or trait which is already in the DNA. This includes enhancing the DNA in plants to make them bigger, invincible to pests, or invincible towards weeds. Although, the reason why GMO's are a controversial topic is because of lack of knowledge. Genetically Modified Organisms are risky and potentially to dangerous to be handling because of the unknown side effects
There are two types of GMO; herbicide tolerant and self-generating insecticide. “The herbicide tolerant variety are designed to survive high doses of toxic weed killers” (Must-Avoid Foods: Linking GMO to Toxicity and Disease, 2012). When the toxic weed killers get used on these crops, some of the toxins end up in the weed in the food. What is alarming is that the toxic weed killers are actually linked to birth defects, cancer, and hormone disruption (Must-Avoid Foods: Linking GMO to Toxicity and Disease, 2012). The self-generating insecticide such as corn, produces their own insecticide in each and every cell (Swanson, Genetically Modified Organisms and the deterioration of health in the United States, 2013). When insects eats the corn or any other food with the insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) toxin, the insecticide breaks open the stomach of insects in order to kill them. Although this supposedly applies only to insects, studies have shown that the BT-toxin can also break the wall of
In other situations, like devastating crop damage due to insect pests, proteins specifically toxic to the pests may be engineered in to cause fatality within the insect, as in the case of Bt corn. Opponents of genetically modified crops, or anti-GMO, state that the health effects of genetically modified crops are unknown and potentially hazardous to human beings. This health effect is not known because the genetically modified crops are a relatively new technology and it would require an extensive period of time to study the chronic effects, if any, of the GM crops. Given the limited data available, it is reasonable that some individuals may caution the use of GM crops. However, given that there will be future case studies and evaluations of GM crops, it is unlikely that the GM crops will cause any different health effects than normal crops. Anti-GMO groups also state that GMO crops are costly for farmers and the consumers. In addition, these groups, like GeneWatch, lobby the government in support of anti-GMO laws.
Genetically Engineered foods (GMO’s) hurts the U.S. as a whole from multiple aspects, goes against what people want, therefore the production of these foods needs to be eliminated. Genetically modified organisms make up a lot of the food in the U. S market today. Creating genetically modified organisms harms the environment. Consuming GMO’s can cause harmful health risks in the long run. Not labeling GMO’s the FDA is creating financial destruction in industries. The FDA seems to not put the peoples wants in mind. As a country people have to start and contribute to the elimination of GMO’s across the nation.
GM foods may be safe or may be dangerous either way people should be able to have the choices as to what they want to consume into their own body.
Genetically modified organisms, otherwise known as GMOs, are a great danger to humanity. GMOs are genetically altered organisms engineered with the purpose to be resistant to dangerous pesticides, or to repel certain pests or certain viruses. The main purpose of them is to save farmers money when it comes to harvesting crops and cutting down labor costs. Overall, GMOs (also known as biotech or transgenic crops) are not safe and there are many reasons to prove it. First and foremost, GMOs pose a great risk to people’s health. GMOs are not natural. Scientists have developed these to help increase crop yields and profits for farmers and the companies selling the seeds and pesticides. They sacrifice people’s health at the expense of risks such as, humans developing allergies and possible resistance to antibiotics. Second, the environment will suffer greatly from GMOs by increasing the use of harmful herbicides. GMOs have insecticidal properties in their DNA. This on its own can be very harmful and poisonous to the ecosystem. The required herbicides used on GMOs to kill the weeds are also very dangerous to the environment. Lastly, GMOs cause great distress to organic agriculture. The organic agriculture is being compromised and abolished when GMOs come into contact with organic crops. While only a few big companies hoard the seed industry, this can be the demise of the planet’s organic agriculture. That will leave GMO companies in charge of the
GMOs are still heavily debated about if they should be used, or even exist, in a time where we are having multiple issues with the health of the Earth. GMOs are already being used in grocery stores all around the globe, from turning carrots their signature orange color to most recently, apples that don't brown (In Use As Of February 10th). Other then these visual uses, GMOs usually are packed full of nutrients like Vitamin A.
The controversy over genetically modified organisms is giving agriculture an undesirable reputation that has to change in order for agriculture to continue to be a thriving industry. Most people don’t understand the actual definition of a GMO, which is why they think these foods are bad for them. A GMO is a genetically modified organism that has been modified for the good of the product, with a goal of becoming a more desirable product. These foods have been changed so that they can get more positive feedback from the consumers without dramatically changing the price of the product. All of these factors add up to why these new GMOs aren’t harmful and they help contribute to farmers’, ranchers’ and scientists’ lives. Most of the crops grown in Southwestern Virginia, or Appalachia are GMO related crops.
There are many people who will argue that genetically modified foods are safe and not harmful to people. The consumption and production of GMO foods is perceived by many people to be technology that has been awfully evaluated and could possibly be dangerous and harmful to humans. Although, When there are new or fairly new genetically modified crops they
