Guess who is coming to dinner, directed by Stanley Kramer and written by William rose. Staring Spencer Trace who died 17 days after filming was completed. Cindy Poitier first African American wins an Oscar and Katharine Hepburn who won an academy award for her performance in this movie. The well written contemporary story is full of meaningful convincing arguments designed to make the audience question their values about race relations.
The timing of the movie was genius, the sixties was the beginning of changing the boundaries of racial categories in the modern error of race relations. It came at a time when it was possible but not acceptable for interracial couple to be together, and successfully showed the difference between two generations,
In the movie “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, Johanna (Joey) and John boarded an airplane from Hawaii to San Francisco. Joanna comes from a background of a Caucasian wealthy family and John comes from a background of an African –American working class family. Joanna is a classy, sophisticated colleague who met Dr. John Prentice who was holding a lecture at Hawaii University and was attending a party at the Deans. At the beginning of the movie, Johanna and John arrives at the San Francisco airport, check their luggage out with the bagger, and began talking amongst each other. At this point, both characters are building rapport. Next, they caught a taxi, from the airport and rode within the city of San
How the director achieved their purpose was through all of the elements of film combined in this movie. For example, the lighting in a few scenes reflected the mood. In one scene it was dim, monochrome, and dull. I feel the sense of the lighting really gave the feeling of what the director was trying to pursue. Another example is camera angles and techniques during the sports scenes. Sports scenes are difficult to film because of the constant movement and the scenes incorporating sports were done perfectly. The acting, writing, and music was genuinely beautiful. The acting really made me feel like that it was in the 1940s by the way they talked and the writing was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it and how it was written. There wasn’t much music in this movie but when there was it related to the scene and was beautiful. As an example, during those intense sports scene, intense music would play. There are many strengths to this movie including the acting, directing, and honestly the overall performance, in my opinion. One weakness though was the language (cursing) used throughout the movie. Even though it was historically accurate for the way they talked, I feel like the movie could’ve been just as successful without it. My overall response to this movie is that it was intriguing to watch. I say this because I found the storyline and how that it was about Jackie Robinson and what he went through interesting,
The audience who viewed this film was primarily younger adults, having enough knowledge to understand society as well as the initiative to try to make a difference in the racial inequalities of the time period. This film definitely made the general public think about and question social norms and customs, and could have ultimately aided the civil rights
“ Some of these early productions have racial themes which reorganize the world in such a way that black heritage is rewarded over white paternity; they are schematic renunciations of the prevailing order of things in white American society where, historically, the discovery of black blood meant sudden reversal of fortune, social exclusion, or banishment.” (Gaines, P.3) Within the movie the amount of mistruths about African Americans was sad. Within the movie you notice that the blacks were always or seem to be yelling, acting uncivilized and doing
The movie itself covers so many pivotal and defining moments in history and provides an intimate observation with a twist of humor and charm that is not often depicted in movies such as these. The movie itself gives an honest insight into situations of the time that are not often addressed. One moment early on in the movie depicts the strong relationship between a single mother and her child in the 1950s, as a rule of thumb television
Did the film reveal any form of RACISM or STEREOTYPING from any perspective? Please elaborate with details/examples (14.28 Possible Points). 100 word minimum between the two
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is a 1967 Academy Award-winning comedy-drama film starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, and Katharine Houghton.
I thought the movie was fantastic! The characters were perfect and so well played. It really showed all the great aspects of Jackie Robinson and his family. It also portrayed all of the hardships he had to go through and live with everyday. The message the movie was sending is that racial barriers have been broken, and many other barriers can be broken as well as long as you persevere. I learned all about Jackie Robinson, his family and how he became involved in Major League Baseball. I would most definitely recommend using the movie in class to support a content area. We could probably spend an entire week on the movie and race ideologies. This movie was a perfect example of the ideology, and it teaches you about it too. Overall it was a great film, and I am so glad it came out in time for this
This movie is a wonderful production starting from 1960 and ending in 1969 covering all the different things that occurred during this unbelievable decade. The movie takes place in many different areas starring two main families; a very suburban, white family who were excepting of blacks, and a very positive black family trying to push black rights in Mississippi. The movie
This movie did an excellent job portraying the time era in which the Civil War was taken place and depicts the emotions and pressures of war. The movie helped me to visual that time period in a better sense and to see the perspective of African American soldiers fighting in the Civil War. The movie showed a lot more in depth and personal feelings of the black soldiers during that time period. The movie portrayed what the black soldiers had to deal with as soldiers of the Union and it helped me to visual what I learned about the black regiments during the civil war. The film even showed the soldiers having to do manual labor and lute the southern towns and cities. It also showed how even though the black soldiers were on the same side as the white soldiers of the Union, the black soldiers were still treated as unequal and faced prejudice daily by the other white soldiers. It also showed the strong belief of many of the white Union soldiers that they fought for emancipation and the freedom of the
The film “Guess who’s coming to dinner” surprised me. It was surprised me that a white girl and a black man would get married. It was surprising because in the 1960’s it wasn’t normal for a white and black person to get married. It surprised me that the mom was okay with their marriage so easily because I expected the mom to be like the dad and say no, but the mom was okay with her daughter marrying a black man because she knew it would make her happy. It stood out to me that Joanna didn’t care what her parents thought and told her parents that they were still going to get married even if they said no. It stood out to me that they were getting married so fast because I thought everything was happening really fast too just like their parents.
Race does not play a large role in this movie, which tells you a lot about the community the movie is set in. None of the characters in the movie are people of color. This tells the audience that the movie is dealing with an all-white, poor, rural community. This allows the audience to fill in information regarding this community based on what is already known about such communities.
Even though the film was meant to funny, it did make me think about different cultural preduice and obstacles interacial relationships may face. Over all I enjoyed the film it poked fun at racial prejudice and brought some good topics to the table. However, I wish they would have take the opportunity to have gone deeper into racism and brought it out into the open for people to
In the light of, the director makes good points through the whole movie about what they went through. I like this movie because it gives me more information of the people who were involved or who were there during that time. Like, Ann Lee Coper (Oprah Winfrey), Martin Luther King (David Oyelowo), and the rest of the people who help fight for African Americans to be able to vote. The movie also shows the difficult and the happy time they went through. Even the problems with their family. No matter what’s going on, they were still focus and full invested in having freedom. What I learned from this movie was that they did not let all the obstacles of what they went through mess up their main goal because of that I am able to take those lesson for my
It was this filmed that sparked the 1927 production code, which was called the Don’t and Be Carful’s. This production code was a guideline for professionals in the industry, on what was not to be depicted on the screens for audience to watch. The representation of miscegenation was strictly prohibited from the years 1930-1956. This production code was a reflection of the views that were held in society at the time. As cinema is often a reflection of society, miscegenation when it is present in films is often if not always represented to the audience as problematic. The relationships start off great but have a hard time progressing to anything further as, each side has to deal with problems that they cannot relate to, or has issues addressing with their partners. These as these were the views of society at the time, the view that these interracial relationship wouldn’t work and were unnatural were projected on our screens to further reinforce the message to the audience.
