I won’t even dignify your hunting as a sport argument because hunting (which I am not against, by the way, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it) is not a sport. A sport involves physical exertion and competition. What kind of physical exertion does a fat, flannel-clad guy in a tree holding a rifle with a scope and shooting at an unsuspecting deer hundreds of yards away put forth? I’m thinking opening up the pop-top on those beer cans isn’t really that exhausting. But back to the guns. Yes, my “rant” was “emotional,” as you said, and thank God for that. I’d hate to think that I was cold enough to not get emotional over the unnecessary loss of life brought about by people who abuse firearms. Yes, Dan, I did say these deaths were brought …show more content…
Teach children “gun safety“? Have you ever met a child? Well, I have, and they happen to be my six-year-old and four-year-old sons, and believe me, “gun safety” lessons would be a fast-track to a double funeral. There’s no such thing as teaching “gun safety” to small children. I’m sure you’re not aware of this little bit of child safety information, seeing as how you have no children, but the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of five don’t get swimming lessons because it gives you and the child a false sense of security. See, what happens is, the child thinks he knows how to swim, the parent thinks the child knows how to swim, defenses go down, and splash, gurgle, gasp…drowned child. It’s the same thing with a gun. If a child were taught “gun safety,” he’d think he knew how to handle a gun, and that child would either be dead or an accidental murderer. But thanks for …show more content…
I’m an adult, I’ve never had a gun or been educated about a gun, but I’m well aware that it’s more powerful than I am, that it can cause death, that a gun should always be treated as if it’s loaded, and that it should never be pointed at anybody unless it’s a life or death situation. I also know that a gun should be put safely out of reach of children, out of sight from visitors just in case they turn out to be one of those gun-stealing criminals I mentioned earlier, and the safety should always be engaged. What more is there to know? Any adult with any shred of common sense has “gun education.” The people who really need educatin’ about guns are the people in the government and the NRA who think it’s our basic right to have guns. People who allow the sale of firearms without background checks. People who think it’s reasonable to allow private citizens to own military-grade weapons. Isn’t a .22 just as good of an “equalizer” as a
In her article she tells us about how at a very young age her father got her into shooting, and since then has taught her about gun safety and how to properly handle a gun. She mentions that her father once told her that if she ever saw another person with a gun to not believe that they properly know how to use it, and to start moving away from that person. Silko’s article is a very good article and has a very good point, that they should have special classes and harder training for people to get a concealed weapons permit. I believe this article should for sure be allowed to be used in this comp I class. It explains a very good point that a gun in the hands of someone who does not know how to use it, creates a very dangerous situation. For instance the shooting at the elementary school in Colorado, if that man’s mother would have had better instruction on how to lock up and store her guns, then maybe her son wouldn’t have been able to get ahold of them so easily and have been able to kill and harm the many people he did.
I believe guns should be kept out of hands of young children. Every family who has purchased a gun should tell their children about the dangerous of a gun, not to scare them but to explain a gun to them. I believe if parents do not explain the importance of a gun to the children at a young age, they will grow up wondering what it does and how it work, which could hurt them or someone else. I was told from a very young age not to touch a gun without my dad or mom’s help, they did this so if I wanted to hunt with my dad I would not be scared to shoot and so I would not just decide to handle a gun alone. Along with telling me the importance of a gun my parents kept the guns out of reach.
The Second Amendment of the US Constitution protects individual gun ownership. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution reads, "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Gun ownership is an American tradition older than the country itself and is protected by the Second Amendment; more gun control laws would infringe upon the right to bear arms. Justice Antonin Scalia, LLB, in the June 26, 2008 District of Columbia et al. v. Heller US Supreme Court majority opinion syllabus stated, "The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home." The McDonald v. City of Chicago (2010) ruling also stated that the Second Amendment is an individual right. Lawrence Hunter, Chairman of Revolution PAC, stated, "The Founders understood that the right to own and bear laws is as fundamental and as essential to maintaining liberty as are the rights of free speech, a free press, freedom of religion and the other protections against government encroachments on liberty delineated in the Bill of Rights."
Over the years the topic of gun control has turned out to be very polemic causing large debates, especially in the United States. A vast majority of people who are against gun control insist that is their right to own a gun mainly for self defense, while others who are for it, point out that it is not necessary to have access to certain guns like the military-style weapons therefore a ban should take place.
In an editorial published in the Vidette Online titled “We Need Gun Control Now More Than Ever,” the editorial board takes on the topic of the need for stricter gun control. The editorial board reports that if gun control isn’t more strictly enforced it will only create more mass shootings. They make the point that if there was stricter gun control many people would still be living, but their lives have been cut short because of mass shootings. The editorial board is correct when they go on to say enough is enough and we need to figure out a way to stop these mass shootings (“Editorial: We”). However, the board is not correct when they make the statement that putting an end to mass shooting is going to be solved by banning firearms all
-- The dimwits who insist EVERYONE should have the right to own them do (Quentin R. Bufogle). See the people that own guns kill people so quit blaming the guns because a gun is an inanimate object and it does not say “oh I’m going to kill someone today”. It’s usually a person that has thought the process out and usually has a beef with someone else and doesn’t have the balls to fight the person like we are supposed to do if all did that we would have no prison to go to. If you do not have the balls to fight someone in person like a real man then you should not go around starting crap. Why do people have to fight with guns I don’t know but I think guns should be left to the military to use and we would probably lower the gun violence. I do not get why most people have loaded guns in their house and it is usually right beside their bed and when their kids go in the room they see it and they see it they think it’s a toy and they point it and pull the trigger they get shot and now they are dead. The parent think it was an accident but only if they taught their children about gun safety. Have you ever thought about the moment when you pull the trigger how your family feels and the other person’s family feels? No because it happens so fast that you do not even think. ““It sometimes feels like a strange movie, you know, it’s all so weird that sometimes I wonder if it is really happening” (Eminem). This quote is so true because when you pull the
In the U.S. more than 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year, you can say that we need stricter gun laws. Who should we blame for all of the shootings in America? We should blame the people who pull the trigger, the people who sell the guns, and our government. Gun control is one of the biggest debates because everyone has their own strong opinions. If the U.S. had better gun control laws, then there wouldn't be any gun violence issues.
More times than not when the issue of gun control is brought into conversation the Second Amendment is the center of attention and many believe that “gun ownership is an American tradition older than the country itself and is protected by the Second Amendment” (Metzel and Kenneth). The primary reason for the creation of this amendment was to make certain that every person could legally bear arms, allowing individuals and families to feel safe in their own homes. It is safe to say that homes should be a secure place to lay down at night, and owning a weapon can allow one to have a sense of peace. Therefore, viewing the big picture of gun control can leave one opposing the whole idea. A person knows that they are going to be smart and rational with a firearm, but they need to consider how another person is going to function with that kind of power in their hands. Every person in this world functions differently, and mental illness plays a huge role in the way a person’s brain works. Within the United States since 1970 it is statistically proven that at least 60% of people who committed a mass shooting exhibited symptoms of paranoia, delusions, or depression, before committing
Gun control has been a topic of conversation for a long time. With that comes the issue of gun violence that has taken over America, from concerts and movie theaters to schools and churches, mass shooting have taken many lives. Data has shown that 19 children are hospitalized every day from a gun related injury and 1,300 children are killed each year from gun injuries. And there are many people who are opposite sides of the firearm issue. Some people believe that it is their constitutional right to be able to own as many guns as they want while the opposite side of the spectrum believes that the second amendment should be erased from the constitution and make guns illegal. However, many people on both sides agree that kids need to be taught gun safety.
As of February of 2018, there have been over 5,000 gun-related incidents in America this year, resulting in over 1,000 deaths. 18 of these gun-related events occured on school grounds, resulting in 22 deaths. These statistics are a disturbing look into the way that gun laws are handled in America; over the recent years, gun violence has skyrocketed, and each time a major incident occurs, the government does nothing but utter empty condolences, while doing nothing about the situation at hand. To protect the safety of the citizens of this country, gun control laws must become more strict. While some people claim that restricting gun laws infringes rights protected by the Second Amendment, adding specificity to the Second Amendment would
Sandy Hook Elementary. Aurora, Colorado. San Bernardino, California. Las Vegas, Nevada. Orlando, Florida. (Words with Negative Connotation) These are just some of the biggest mass shootings that have swept America in the past few years. Hundreds of lives are lost each year to gun related violence in the United States alone. Gun control has been a topic in our country since our founding fathers adopted the second amendment to the US constitution. Although recently controversy has sparked to an all-new extent in America due to the recent spike in mass shootings and gun related homicides. So many families and loves ones are affected each year in the United States because of gun related violence and other mass killing events, because of these events gun control laws need to be revamped and strengthened in American in order to protect the citizens.
To start with, training and licensing should be mandatory for any individual looking to purchase and shoot a firearm. Accidental deaths due to guns is a very prominent thing in America and the main cause behind this is because of untrained gun owners and untaught children. Here is a devastating story that show how untrained gun owners and arrogant children are a deadly combination: “Cassie Culpepper, 11, was riding in the back of a pickup with her 12-year-old brother and two other children. Her brother started playing with a pistol his father had lent him to scare coyotes. Believing he had removed all the bullets, he pointed the pistol at his sister and squeezed the trigger. It fired, and blood poured from Cassie’s mouth” (Luo & McIntire, 2013). The father in this story should never
When I was a kid, I did not think about gun violence. In fact, I grew up in a household that accepted guns. My dad, uncle, and grandfather all owned guns, and I never really gave much thought about it. When I was younger my dad bought me a little BB gun and taught me how to use it. We used to go outside in our backyard which was all fenced off. He taught me all the safety precautions, and set up the paper targets for me to shoot. I always believed that was normal, everyone owned guns. I didn't realize the importance in which they played, in our society, for protection, until July 20, 2012. I watched the frightening and horrific incident that took place in a no gun-zone theater in Aurora, Colorado. It was that day at my house that the importance of guns became very clear to me. As I watched the intense news, I saw how all those victims were in danger, and how they appeared so helpless. They were trapped, and left with nothing to do but call 911, and wait for the police to show up. In the last five years, I have come to realization the importance that guns play, whether or not it is in a gun-free zone or not. They are a base of protection, because attackers will always find away to obtain them.
Gun control in the United States is a very controversial topic in today’s political society, leaving the nation divided into two sides with two strongly opinionated beliefs. This all started with the increase in the amount of mass shootings and an overall increase in gun violence. The two sides consist of the liberal point of view and the conservative point of view. The liberals believe that the availability of firearms to the people in the country is a major issue, and that the U.S. government is at fault for the mass shootings due to the lenient regulations on guns. In retaliation, the conservatives argue that having a gun is a God given right, that the Second Amendment of The Constitution. Although the availability of guns is seen to be
