There have been a number of mass shooting incidents in schools recently. This violence has caused many casualties and injuries, most recently to innocent children. They never got the chance to grow up and live their lives. These unnecessary shootings have become a normal part of our lives. There are many adults and children who never got the chance to grow up in a world where they truly felt safe. People should not have to live in a constant state of fear when they leave or enter their homes. Adults and children leave their homes every day to go to work or school, but some never make it back home. We need to lessen the problem of gun violence.
To begin, one way we can lessen the problem of gun violence is by petitioning Congress. These mass

If there was a ban on the assault weapons, then no one would be able to buy them, therefore preventing more deaths and injuries. In their journal article, Christopher Koper and Jeffrey Roth talk about the 1944 Federal Assault Weapon Ban, and the impact it had. They said, “[t]he aw-lcm ban targets a subset of semiautomatic weapons capable of accepting large-capacity magazines.” (38) These weapons do much more damage than an average handgun, and it would be beneficial to all if they were banned. In 1996, there was a mass shooting in Australia. After this happened, they set forth laws banning semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. With this, they also instituted a 28-day waiting period and required a justifiable reason for owning the gun. Since then, there has not been a mass shooting there. This is what needs to happen in the U.S. Putting a ban on these weapons would not only prevent deaths in public places, but also in their homes. In her journal article, Margaret Price talks about how domestic violence is a problem that affects thousands of people, and becomes even worse when guns are involved. She wrote, “[d]omestic assaults involving firearms are 12 times more likely to be fatal than those not involving firearms” (79). If there was a ban on these weapons, then it could eliminate some of the violence and casualties that occur daily. Many people believe that banning these weapons from the public only is unfair, so the police and military should not be immune to this ban. Price wrote, “[r]esearch has shown domestic violence to be significantly more prevalent in police populations and in the armed forces than it is in the general population” (83). Many veterans from the military or police force have suffered from PTSD, and allowing them to have a weapon at home can lead to problems down the line. They are citizens just like everyone else, and should not get special
School shootings are a common occurrence on daily news. Students shouldn’t terrify going to school with the mindset that a shooter will show up with intention of killing people. Ideally, students leave home for school to learn, and not worried someone will come in and shoot everyone. When I was younger I would go to the bathroom worried a shooter would enter my school leaving me alone in a life or death situation. School security improvement is extremely important because children should feel safe and never in danger. Also, schools need better ways of helping children feel safe when they come for six hours everyday. More could be done for students, not only as prevention from shootings occurring but from relieving young children of unnecessary anxiety.
“How many more school shootings do we need before we start talking about this as a social problem, and not merely a random collection of isolated incidents?” said Jackson Katz, activist against violent acts. This quote perfectly shows that school security needs to be improved and taken more seriously. There have been 275 school shootings since Columbine. The virginia tech massacre is the largest modern shooting in U.S history with 32 killed and 17 wounded. If precautions were taken this could have been prevented.25% of teenagers are exposed to hate related graffiti within school grounds.Schools now are filled with drug dealing, wepons, and acts of violence. There needs to be a solution to this growing problem. I believe every school should have metal detectors,an on guard police officer, a closing metal door,a K9 unit, and faculty are required to wear IDs.I believe if add just one of these security measures the school will be safer than it had before.
Thirteen people were killed at Columbine High School in 1999, thirty-three died during the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, and twenty-seven people, twenty of whom were children no older than seven, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 (Kirk). These name only a few of the larger and most well-known school shooting incidences. In total, 297 people have lost their lives due to school-based shootings since 1980 (Kirk). Although this number may be small in comparison to death by guns overall, these instances are completely unwarranted and it is likely that they could have been avoided or at the very least reduced. These people, college and high school students, teachers, and even children, might still be alive today if our
Mass shootings have become one of the most fearful events that could happen in elementary schools, high schools, and College campuses. These violent actions committed by a number of individuals have happened for many years and will continue happening unless prevented. Individuals like James Holmes opened fire in a Colorado movie theater, killing twelve individuals and injuring twenty, John Sawahri shot five students dead in Santa Monica College also injuring four individuals. However Eric Harris and Dylan Kleibold executed the most horrific act of school violence in United States History. These two individuals managed to take the lives of twelve students, a teacher and managed to take their own life in the process. This act of crime has spread through America, leaving no one safe.
One gruesome statistic, “50% of the 62 mass shootings between 1982 and 2012.” Demonstrates the dangers of assault weapons. “When high-capacity magazines were used in mass shootings, the death rate rose 63% and the injury rate rose 156%.” This quote shows the inherent killing power of assault weapons and how fatal they can be in the hands of the wrong people. Compared to shotguns or rifles, which can be used for hunting or keeping away predatory animals, assault weapons of war, are designed specifically to kill human beings. The purpose of assault weapons only adds to the hazards of the guns and how they should not be available to civilians. There is no good reason a regular citizen should can kill hundreds of people in several minutes. The dangers these guns pose is immense. The AR-15, which is the civilian version of the M-15 assault gun, can fire a max of 110 rounds per minute which is a crazy amount. The overwhelming firepower of these guns shows the immense danger that assault weapons pose with one to two bullets needed to kill someone . Indeed, 82 people could be killed in one minute with this deadly gun. The dangers from assault weapons caused congress to pass a ban on assault weapons in 1994 lasting until 2004 . The number of mass shootings doubled since the lifting of the ban. The ban helped suppress the number of mass shootings, which shows the benefit of keeping an assault weapon ban. These facts show the extreme danger of assault weapons and, in the hands of a crazy or violent person, hundreds of people can be put at risk and possibly lose their life to a freak accident and ruining someone’s
One of the many controversies in today’s society and politics is putting a ban on assault weapons. Putting a ban on assault weapons will not reduce crime. There are many other weapons people could use for crime. The banning assault weapons would not stop the number of homicides or suicides either. The United States’ gun laws are nothing like other countries who’ve reduced crime in their nation. Other countries like Germany and the U.K. have developed successful laws and bans. The ban on assault weapons would not reduce crime, so U.S. citizens need a different approach at a ban.
The sate of Texas perhaps is seeking to give all college students the right to protect themselves while they are outside of their homes, due to all of crime and corruption going on. However the state of Texas is also looking into passing this law not only for students but also professors and staff of the university or college. However in order for students to be able to carry a handgun they need to have their CHL license and must be 21 years old. I do not agree with this decision at all. I myself as a college student will not feel safe walking around campus knowing that any of the students walking next to me could have a handgun. What if student provokes a another student and he is in a possession of a handgun, he could feel in power to take
Protection in schools should be an important idea that needs to be done to keep our schools safe.In the year 2018, and many years before, numerous shootings have been occuring in schools. I feel it is time that we put an end to it. To name a few, on December 14, 2012 many students and staffs lives were taken due to guns. On February 14, 2018 the same event happened which is indeed horrific. Something must be done to stop these tragedies. After the most recent and deadly mass shooting a rally was taken place all over the world on March 24th, 2018. Many students and parents attended that rally and spoke out about what needs to be done. There were survivors of the Stoneman Douglas shooting and celebrities who spoke out about the event that occured. I think school shootings and gun violence is very scary and nerverecking being a middle school student. When I wake up in the morning getting ready to go school I never know how to feel because I could be killed that day in a place where we are supposed to learn and be safe. It is very scary being a student and having to
There is a long history of school shootings in the US dating back to the 1700s. The earliest known school shooting was on July 26, 1764. Four Lenape American Indian entered a schoolhouse. They shot and killed the schoolmaster and 9 to 10 children only 2 children survived. When other countries had a mass shooting they would immediately do something about it they would add gun control. Now there have been more than 18 school shootings just in 2018 about one school shooting per week. About 254 years have passed since the earliest known school shooting in 1764 and we still haven't solved the problem of shootings. Kids and adults have lost their lives during these horrific events because no one is adding proper gun control and this is why us kids
In all states now to get a handgun allow, an individual must pass a record verification to buy a gun. Lamentably, this is not the situation, and more youth can get hold of a handgun than any time in recent memory. Likewise, a stacked firearm in a man's house resembles a terrible protection arrangement that lone spreads 95% of the things that should be, incorporated. What's more, is significantly more with no issue simple for youngsters to get their hands on and use in wrongdoing to hurt somebody or hurt somebody in their home. I do trust that by executing harder handgun laws and giving adolescents stiffer condemning that carries out wrongdoing or violations with firearms can lessen wrongdoing by adolescents with weapons. Also, if an adolescent
Everyone thinks about Education, which is a big deal. Some schools don’t have an enough money to teach and keep the kids safe. We need to give children good education so they can learn to get a good job, support their family when they are older, and to not turn into a druggy. Gun control everyone has been talking about it lately, but I say we don’t need gun control, “it is not the guns that kill, it is the people who kill,” there is nothing wrong with guns, it is just the people who need help. Welfare has been brought up before, what is think is, we don’t need to put very much money into it, just enough to help the people get a new start and to help the children as much as possible. For health care we need to give a little bit of money to get
Laws in many governments prohibit carrying a knife. However, carrying a weapon is permitted in come cases, such as the Kirpan, a ceremonial sword worn at all times by followers of the Sikh religion. Nevertheless, ethics and morals do not determine a law. Instead, what is just and unjust is what matters, as John Austin believed, and to some, religion is not a recognizable purpose to carry a weapon. Possession of a knife in itself is not evil; rather the potential for violence creates a need for control and so elimination of the possibility is vital.
What would you do if a person sitting next to you had a gun? This question arose since 2015 when the Texas Senate Bill 11 was passed. Starting August 1st, 2016 for Texan universities any student over 21 y/o with a permit to handle handguns could carry one to school. Classrooms should be denoted as gun-free zones because guns represent a sense of fear, hard to obtain for equal defense, and they increase classroom tension.
The debate of whether or not teachers should be allowed to carry guns in school is very heated and continues to dilemma the minds of many. However, both the supportive and opposing parties have good grounds that can be used to choose. Recently in the year 2012, 26 people in elementary school in Texas were shot dead triggering public demand that teachers should be armed with guns in order to protect our students. A local resident of the area around the elementary school opened fire on 20 students and 6 staff before he shot himself dead. Maybe, just maybe this could have been avoided if the teachers were armed with fire arms. This however might send the wrong message to students, making them believe that it is okay to carry guns around or shoot people. Are our children safer with guns in school or without? The answer lies only by examining the cause and effect of this idea.
