I have chosen to write about one of my favorite alternative rock band, Red Hot Chili Peppers from Los Angeles, California. My decision was based upon two things; one being I like the band, while the other was to learn if some of their music is sending the wrong message to our young people. I personally would not consider myself music sappy; never have I really been given a chance to listen to music as I grew up, to find what I like. As of today, I don’t know who sings what song nor really know what the lyric’s mean. With today’s environment young people are given a chance to be inspired by different kinds of media; thus giving them the opportunity to actually find out what the artist is meaning behind the songs. Many people do not realize what it means to be a musician, much less a famous musician. You need to be smart, talented and charasmatic. Dave grohl has achieved all three of these things. He has completed the goals of many young men, including myself. Dave has been in many successful bands and written and performed multiple hit songs. Being successful in life is not always easy, because of different ways that success can be achieved. With many theories out there on success, it is hard to figure out what is needed to be done to gain success. In everyone’s lives there are many different beliefs out there that can lead to it. In the book “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, there are numerous theories that are covered with examples of successful people. They clearly show how success can be done in not just one way but in many others. The most known people that are considered to be successful are billionaires and celebrities. They all have gained success in their lives in their own diverse ways. A good set of successful people in the world today to talk about are Mark Zuckerberg, Whitney Houston, and Nicholas Sparks. These people all come from different backgrounds before gaining their success. Malcolm Gladwell discussed many theories in the book “Outliers” that can relate to the success of the people mentioned above. The true knowledge behind success can be achieved in numerous ways.

Their single Smells Like Teen Spirit made Nevermind the first alternative rock album to acquire worldwide fame (“Kurt Cobain”). Cobain’s talent was record smashing and innovative, because he took a whole music genre to a never before seen worldwide level. This type of accomplishment was not because of some strange luck, but a result of Cobain’s creative approach to the sound of alternative rock. As a result of their breakthrough, many powerful companies started to publicize them like when Time announced, “‘It also launched the commercial vogue for grunge and made Seattle famous for something other than cappuccino, rain, and bad professional sports,’” (Latson, 1). Kurt Cobain’s success was remarkable because not only did the music industry change, but a whole unique business and trend was opened up. The fact that Kurt managed to leave a long lasting imprint in the constantly changing fashion industry displayed how successful he was. In the music industry Cobain changed the direction of contemporary rock and was compared to legends like Bob Dylan and John Lennon (Hilburn). People thought of Kurt as one of the rock legends because of his raw talent that made him extremely relatable and mighty. This was a huge deal, to be compared to other rock legends and to have changed the entire sound of a music genre. Throughout the millennium, music has touched the lives of many people around the world. Music is the one force of nature that can touch one’s heart with the perfect rhythm. With its many genres, people can enjoy each genre of music given the time and place in specific ways. Rock ‘n’ roll, for example, has influenced many Americans from the mid-1950’s and became inspirational today. While listening to rock ‘n’ roll music, everyone can’t help but name one key musician, and his name is Elvis Presley. Because of the way Elvis took the stage with his flashy hair, he later took the title as ‘The King of rock ‘n’ roll’. But was that really the case for African Americans? Out of the many genres of music rock and roll has had a huge impact on the world. Movies and TV shows have used rock songs to help set the mood for action scenes. Rock and roll or simply rock has helped many people deal with aggression and anger. Many people have been a big part in rock history, such as Slash, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Kirk Hammet, and James Hetfield. They are just a few of the many amazing people who helped shape this great genre.

The group came together in the Mid Eighties in Los Angeles. William “Axl” Rose grew up in Indiana with the name Bill Bailey. He adopted the name Rose after he found out his birth fathers name. One of his best friends Jeff Isbell aka Izzy Stradlin headed to Los Angeles after graduating high school. Rose then hitchhiked to meet up with him. There band name Guns n ‘ Roses came when Tracii Guns joined the band. After Guns left the band they were joined by Slash, Adler, and finally McKagan.

Rock and roll has many influences that evolved it into what it is today. Blues had a significant influence on the development of the music, as well as some classical ideas of the solo performer. Through these influences, rock and roll was born.

THE ORIGIN OF ROCK AND ROLL The history of American popular music involves all the kinds of music such as rock and roll, jazz, blues, and many other principal genres of African American music. The origin comes when said: “The blue had a baby and they called it Rock and Roll” (Morgan, 649). Rock and Roll is a genre of music which “was born sometime in the 1950s”, but it was influenced by eighteenth century music (Morgan, 650). These included jazz and swing and led to the beginning to Rock and Roll through traditional folk music.

Specifically, Van Halen and Motely Crue. Within Rocking in time there was focus on how these band formed. For example, the text mentions that Van Halen was supported by Gene Simmons of kiss and how he financed their first demo album which would help lead to them signing with Warner Brothers. Another example is how Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue was inspired at a Kiss concert. While there he fell in awe with the theatrical side of the show and decided to purse creating his own band.

My Chemical Romance (often abbreviated as MCR) was an American rock band from New Jersey, active from 2001 to 2013. The band's best-known lineup consisted of lead vocalist Gerard Way, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero, bassist Mikey Way and drummer Bob Bryar. Founded by Gerard, Mikey, Toro, Matt Pelissier, and later joined by Iero, the band signed to Eyeball Records and released their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love in 2002. They signed with Reprise Records the next year and released their major label debut Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge in 2004. Shortly after the album's release, Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar. A commercial success, the album was awarded platinum status over a year later.
