With a deep passion in education in both learning and teaching others, I will plan to enrich the classroom experience. Furthermore, I contribute an active voice to the Honors Program that will allow me to lead class discussions, and be able to present to anybody on campus. In the course of my time at Union County College, I was able to participate in measures that aided my community and those in need. I took part in the donation and creation of care bags which were donated to the Salvation Army. This initiative was made by AESNJ as part of their statewide drive to help those who lack the resources needed to obtain day to day necessities such as hygienic supplies, socks, tissues and other essentials. Additionally, I made a financial contribution which went towards aiding Syrian children. Helping individuals in need encouraged me to participate in Strides against Breast Cancer a walkathon which generated money for women whose lives were impacted by cancer. Over the course of high school, I have engaged in my community in various ways. For one, I have donated my time volunteering for health-related organizations that promote good causes, such as the “Heart Walk” for the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer's Walk. Contributing to my school and community is a true passion. I am involved in programs like the Red Cross, Angel Tree created by The Salvation Army, and Olive Garden’s Pasta For Pennies. My school hosted a Red Cross blood drive, and I was responsible for promoting the event to individuals within our school. We had a total of two hundred students donate blood. We helped save a total of six hundred lives! I also assisted the Program Angel Tree by promoting the program among the student organizations within my school. Our involvement has helped hundreds of less fortunate children and seniors receive necessities and gifts! As a team, the student council also collects spare change from students in our school. Our collaboration with Olive Garden has helped fund the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth campaign. Throughout the past four years of high school, I have done my best to try and stay actively involved in the community. I have been presented with some amazing volunteer opportunities such as Huron Safety Town, STAR Leadership Camp, American Red Cross, and Huron High School Girl’s Basketball Biddy Program. I spent over 24 hours at Huron Safety Town where I was able to help young students, mainly those going into Kindergarten, learn how to stay safe while on the road. I was also able to spend over 24 hours at STAR Leadership Camp where I was a councilor to those going into the sixth grade. I made sure that each student understood the importance of being a leader in today's society and how important they are to Huron’s community. Through National Honor Society I have been able to maintain in constant contact, approximately 10 hours, with the American Red Cross by volunteering in monthly blood drives. I have also dedicated 16 hours of my time to those young girls interested in someday being a varsity basketball player through the Biddy Basketball Program.

Liz Murray is an influential student because she sets an example for students with struggling homes by pushing herself to live a better life and by going out to speak out and encourage other struggling students to live a better life. While Liz Murray could have done nothing to improve her life, she pushed herself to improve her awful life. For instance, according to reporter Rebecca O’Brien, Liz Murray “completed high school in two years, all while living on the street—rather than with an abusive grandfather who housed her sister—and occasionally spending the night with friends or in the subway”( O’Brien N.P.). This demonstrate that Liz worked hard in school, completing high school in half the time than most people.

When the underdog, usually a lower class high school age student, defies the odds and comes out on top, beating his circumstances to get where nobody thinks he should go, everyone goes crazy for it. So crazy that Hollywood gets in on the act, with movie productions such as The Blind Side, Life of A King, and Slum Dog Millionaire. Sadly, these stories are not commonplace, in fact, they are very few and far between. More often than not, students from lower class families struggle to get by, as a result putting school to the back burner. Students and parents alike can rest assured, their time and money is going into an opportunity to help someone find happiness in what they do while helping others. In simple terms, college plays a part in dictating quality of life. If one is on the fringe about whether or not college is really worth it, they must remember, “not only is there a wage gap between college and noncollege goers, there is now a growing gap between elite degrees within college. College is becoming increasingly competitive” (Leonhardt 1). If money is still a concern, don’t forget that a high salary is attainable.

Before the start of the Fall 2016 semester, I was determined to spend the semester exploring unique volunteer opportunities. All my experiences up until then had felt homogeneous and I was eager to delve into something new and distinct. When the new semester began, I discovered Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin, a non-profit dedicated to providing breast milk to medically fragile babies in need. I never knew such an organization existed and felt that I had found the unique experience I was looking for.
