Head Start and Early Head Start provides families with a free preschool program for children birth to 4 years old. This is housed at Glenside School with certified teachers and staff. Your child’s education is important to prepare him or her socially and academically for kindergarten.

This is a social emotional health service for families and children birth to 26 years old. They provide early intervention programs for 1 to 5 year olds. This program is there to support families and children in reducing the severity of developmental disabilities, autism, or emotional impairments.

Head Start has truly expanded their resources over the years by providing a full school year for ages 3-6 years old and offering services such as health screenings, referrals, and social services (p. 42). Most importantly, each and every Head Start program must follow the federal Head Start Program Performace Standards that address all areas of development (p. 42). The program is truly committed to support low-income families and creating an education system that supports all aspects of the child.

After observing the quality discrepancies between low income and high income educational settings, Johnson realized that “Five and six year old children are inheritors of poverty 's curse…(Johnson, 1965)” As a result, he called for the creation of a program that would allow “…preschool children of poverty [to] get a Head Start on their future (Johnson, 1965).” Soon, Head Start was established, with the goal of “enhance[ing] children’s physical, social, emotional and cognitive development (Mississippi Head Start Association, 2012).”

Teachers are in the news almost every day. Sometimes for good reasons and sometimes for bad reasons. One article I found in the news was one about the Head Start law. This law was created by George W. Bush. It required teachers to have a bachelor’s degree with training in early childhood education. 74% of all teachers in the Head Start program have their bachelor’s degree and training in early childhood education. A problem with this back in 2007 was that the law did not fund a college or university to help train the teachers for the program. Today, there are many places where teachers can go to get this training. The program has lessons that help the teachers to boost their skills and knowledge about early childhoods. I agree with the opinions in the article, because believe that these sort of programs like Head Start and home-visiting programs for soon-to-be mothers or possible at-risk youth. Head Start is a great program that focuses on early delinquency prevention and the home-visiting programs, also, strive to prevent child abuse, neglect, and other negative factors that could increase the chances of a young child to grow up being a delinquent or criminal (Saminsky, 2010). The only negative I would say about these programs is it seems to end at a young age. The article does explain how the author believes that these programs went to an older age. There can still be influences through the rest of their lives as a minor that can have a negative impact
Maya Angelou once said, “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” When diversity is valued people from all nationalities can work together, effectively using their expertise and abilities for the benefit of everyone. Vaccinations are considered to be the greatest health development of the 20th century. Because of advancements in medicine, vaccinations are becoming a widespread medium in the prevention of disease. They have provided the eradication and immunity to many deadly diseases such as smallpox, polio and rubella. Although there is no law that mandates the vaccination of children, they are necessary to prevent the infliction of disease and harm. By making the decision to vaccinate their children, a parent has the potential to save their lives.
Dear Head Start Board Member, I as do I am sure that parents may be looking forward to their kids returning to school, but they’re probably not so excited about the daily challenges around transportation. Not only do most kids need to be dropped off they need to be picked up from school. For working parents who have their own schedules to maintain, all this can be hugely stressful, and I know lots of families can relate to this. I remember back to when my son first start here at this center, and they still had bus transportation available, it was so much more convenient and less stressful getting him to from school every day. Now that I have two children who are kindergarten age and preschool it has become even more difficult for me.

During those years, the percentage of the population who considered English as their second language increased by 140 percent while those who considered English as their primary language only grew thirty-four percent in the same time period (US Census Bureau, 2010).
The Early Development and Learning program follows the Early Childhood Education program with the exception of the student teaching experience. Early development and learning majors take part in an internship. Students of this major are not eligible for teaching certification.
