Sexual Risk Teen Pregnancy Prevention (Condom) Section 1- Health Belief Model The health belief model (HBM) is a psychosocial model that was developed during the 1950’s by social psychologists of the U.S public health services, and this model was used to explain why people failed to participate in disease prevention and detection programs. The theory is one of the most health behavior theories, which is used to explain behavior change and maintenances, but often times used to predict behavior outcome (Glanze, Rimer, & Lewis, 2002). The key concept of the health belief model includes threat perception (perceived threat), behavioral evaluation, self-efficacy and other variables. Since the theory only accounts for individual differences in beliefs and attitudes to predict health-related behaviors, the result of the theory is not completed and accurate (Janz & Becker, 1984). Cures to action of the theory are not clear identified, and there is no defined way for creating instrumentation or arranging constructs of the model. Other weakness is that the test does not consider social influence. It only examines the behavior change in highly individual (Glanze, Rimer, & Lewis, 2002) The best uses of the Health Belief Model The HBM identifies constructs that lead to behaviors outcomes. The HBM is best used in following areas of health behaviors in different populations. For instance, the HBM was used in influenza inoculations, seatbelt usage, exercise, nutrition, Tay-Sachs carrier status screening, high blood pressure screening, smoking cessation, breast cancer screening, and AIDS related to sexual risk behavior on the generation, homosexual men, adolescents, pregnancy women (Glanz et al, 2002) Section 2- Demographics The sample for this portfolio is about sexual risk teen pregnancy prevention by condoms.
