Health Care Reform : The Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, was passed in March 2010. This over-1000-page Act implements a number of reforms designed to increase the availability of health care for individuals. The Act created a Health Insurance Marketplace, a universal way to sign up for subsidized health care plans (which are cheaper), though you can only get certain plans from certain places, including an expanded Medicaid. It also creates an incentive to purchase health insurance-if you don 't, you 'll have to pay a fine, which is interpreted by many as a tax. Additionally, the Affordable Care Act requires sizable firms to provide a certain level of health care to all of their employees, with certain specifications. Obamacare also attempts to make health care cheaper for many, by trying to even out the cost for everyone.

The Affordable Care Act, often referred to as the ObamaCare was signed into law on March 23, 2010. It has created a lot of controversy since its debut. The Healthcare reform will affect all Americans. The issue has many Americans believing it is a great thing for our country while others believe it is a terrible idea and then of course there are those who don’t know what to think. By Jan 1, 2014 Americans will be required to purchase a health care policy or will have to pay a penalty. Ready or not it’s happening. First you would have to understand the background information of the program. As with all things there are pros and cons to the Affordable Care Act. Because it is a new law it is not flawless there is room for changes and recommendations.

The Affordable Care Act enabled more people to obtain health insurance, thus receiving healthcare. This offers a larger variety of people to obtain healthcare, in particular, those who cannot afford it. However, this also increased the stress on a fragile healthcare system with limited professionals and has arguably made a push for a refined method of how to provide and extend care to millions of Americans. The access to healthcare and requirements to have health insurance from 2010 to 2014 have grossly changed. In 2010, if someone did not want healthcare, they did not have to get it, but in 2014, there was a fine established if one refused to buy health insurance. In 2010 during the term of President Barack Obama something needed to be done due to the rise of healthcare costs and the number of people who were uninsured and unable to pay their healthcare bills (ehealthinsurance 2014). United States spent more on healthcare than any other country but yet was only the 34th in life expectancy. As the implementation of The Affordable Care Act (ACA) nears, news media is featuring a large number of individuals whose health insurance coverage is being cancelled. The current administration claims that their objective is for everyone to have health insurance, but there is a gap between their new legislation and the results. American consumers are falling in the gap between private insurance plans that are too expensive, and the poorly developed government system. During his presidential announcement speech, Trump’s presented his ideas on how he will bring the American back to life since the American dream is dead in his perspective. Among all the claims he expresses his thoughts on Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act. He affirms “We have a disaster called the big lie: Obamacare. Obamacare." and admits that indeed Obamacare will really kick in 2016. Trump plans on repealing and replacing Obamacare. He plans on granting better health insurance to everyone at an inexpensive cost for the people and for the government. Trump exaggerates the cost to persuade his Republican audience into believing of Obamacare as a catastrophe, however, he fails to backup the data he presents not to mention that the data is wrong.

Several legislators have proposed alternative policies aimed at bringing the American health care system closer to the goal of universal coverage. “The Patients’ Choice Act,” first unveiled in 2009 by Wisconsin’s First District Congressman and Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, and Oklahoma Senator, Tom Coburn, was one such alternative. The Patients’ Choice Act (PCA) was originally designed to grant universal coverage to every American while ensuring equitable access to services and improved patient outcomes. Although no longer among the options on the table, PCA had its advantages and disadvantages.

The citizens of the United States are burdened with many hardships. Most of these hardships stem from poor political policies and programs set forth by past politicians. However, politicians cannot be the only blame. This country is relatively young. Our political policies are still in somewhat of a “beta” period. We only learn from trial and error. This country is in the middle of a political shift. Now is the time to make the necessary changes to mold and shape our future society for the better. Far too long have Americans been denied basic necessities such as education, food, employment, and most importantly healthcare. The healthcare crisis has been the topic of debate for many years among politicians across all the governmental factions. The catalyst applying the brake on healthcare progress has been a strong division of politicians on what is ethical and what is legal when it comes to the government putting its foot in the door. Along with that debate there is also whether or not the government should do anything at all or just let the private sector and the citizens hash it out. Throughout U.S. history many attempts have been made to reform our healthcare system to no avail. Healthcare reform is clearly an issue that takes great socioeconomic knowledge and political tact. The intent of this paper is to explain what the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are and how to build and improve on its principles. Some improvements that can be made in terms of providing the American people with affordable health care as well as increasing the quality of health care and its insurance. I believe that there are five components of the ACA that could change in order to make it better, such as (1) transitioning single payer method; (2) improving the Medicaid program availability; (3) reducing Cost-sharing and Out-of-Pocket limits, improving Minimum Employer Coverage Requirements; (4) refining the network capability principles; and (5) making the enrollment portals more efficient. Both the new president and Congress need to take these issues seriously and correct these problems

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), also referred to as the "Affordable Care Act" or "ACA" or "Obama Care") is the major health care reform bill passed into law on March 23, 2010. The debates surrounding the PPACA have been volatile at times, and continue to be the most intense public examinations of any piece of legislation in our recent history. The affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is ripe for repeal. For the American public, there are ample reasons for dissatisfaction: higher costs; arbitrary and sometimes absurd rule-making; bureaucratization of an already overly bureaucratized sector of the economy; incompatibility with personal freedom and religious liberty; enormous spending and heavy taxation; and widely acknowledged design flaws, evident in the ACA’s hopelessly complex and unworkable subsidy schemes, boondoggle bailouts, and collapsing co-ops. Nonetheless, other ACA legal challenges were still facing the healthcare law. In December 2015, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court arguing against the constitutionality of the employer insurance mandate within the Affordable Care Act. The law contains a number of experiments designed to drive down health costs, such as Accountable Care Organizations. The whole idea is to move the system away from paying for volume and toward paying for value. We still don't know whether that will happen. But it's fair to say that reducing the cost of health care will make it easier to expand coverage. The nation’s gains in health care coverage and delivery system design over the last several years have made measurable differences in the lives of millions of Americans. There are many ways to achieve a high-performing health system. But it’s critical that the nation remain committed to this goal.

The Affordable Care Act has been a point of contention for many people. I am going to review the Affordable Care Act as far health care provider challenges and benefits. I will look at this from an individual point of view. I will look at this from an employer point of view. I will look at this from an employee point of view. Lastly, I will give my reflection regarding this topic.

The proposed health care reform bill attempts to change issues of public policy and health care management for the poor and uninsured. Many leaders from the Democratic Party are actively engaging in policy-making to fix what Rep. Henry Waxman (D-California) calls a “‘dysfunctional’ health care system” (2009). Currently, the U.S. health care system denies people with pre-existing conditions from receiving care. Another problem with the system is that the health insurance that some employers offer may be so expensive that their employees cannot afford it. Any cuts in Medicaid may mean that physicians have fewer incentives to provide adequate care for the poor. These are some of the many problems that the Affordable Health Choices Act attempts to address. Fiscally conservative political and business groups oppose this measure because they believe that any changes in public policy and health care management might affect them negatively.

On March 23, 2010 the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed by President Obama, raising the question for many of whether this new law was going to be more helpful or hurtful. With universal healthcare, healthcare coverage would be increased tremendously, costs would be reduced, jobs would be created, and consumers would be protected. Conversely, it will also raise taxes and wait times, lead to a smaller number of doctors, and infringe on some employers’ 1st amendment rights. Presenting both arguments for and against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act allows one to draw a conclusion on whether the new program will benefit or hinder the citizens of the United States.
