Health Education class has been very beneficial in multiple ways. From learning about health and wellness to causes of death and many more informational topics, this class has taught me many valuable lessons. I will be reflecting on some of my favorite topics that we discussed this year. When class first begun, we talked about life expectancy and how the average life expectancy is seventy-seven years’ old which I thought was low because I know many people with grandparents who are older including mine. A main key to living a long life is health and wellness. This includes dimensions such as physical, intellectual, psychological, social, spiritual, environmental, occupational, and financial health and wellness. Being physically inactive, smoking, …show more content…
We also learned about mental health and how it affects more than twenty-five percent of Americans over the age of eighteen – almost sixty million people – every year are affected. Something sad that we learned was that the third leading cause of death among fifteen to twenty-four year olds is suicide. I believe that there is always an answer to someone’s mental health and it should never be suicide. With the correct help and guidance given by a professional, peoples mental health would be able to be cured. Along with mental health we also learned about emotional health and spiritual health which are also important to live a happy and healthy life. A person’s self esteem should always be positive because no one is perfect and flaws are what make us so unique. Another topic that we talked about and most college students can reflect on is stress. Even though there is positive and negative stress, college students said stress as their number one obstacle to their academic achievements. Increased heart rate and blood pressure also come from stress which I can relate to especially during finals …show more content…
This can be done by taking the stairs instead of an elevator, taking a walk during a study break, encouraging healthier options for a meal, or even asking a friend to come to the gym. Living a healthy lifestyle can also prevent diseases that cause death. Ways to prevent heart disease would be to encourage your elders to get outside and walk for at least thirty minutes a day while maintaining a healthy diet. Going on the walk with them would relieve stress and encourage bonding time as well. Even though cancer is not really preventable living a healthy lifestyle such as not going in tanning beds, wearing sunscreen, watching what is in products applied to your skin, etc. can all help prevent some cancers. Preventing a stroke can start by lowering blood pressure, losing weight, and exercising. Encouraging family members and friends to get regular check ups with their doctors can be beneficial for everyone. Mental Health disorders can be alleviated by talking to a professional and having good relationships with family and friends. If people do not have good relationships with family and friends this can be a huge factor with mental illness. Encouraging people to get outside and enjoy the little things can help someone cope with a mental disorder or even just being a friend to talk to. Encouraging those with metal disorders to monitor and manage
Throughout this coursework I will be writing about different life-stages of my chosen celebrity. My chosen celebrity is Michael Jackson. I will start with physical development and go through intellectual, emotional and social developments.
Overall, I have been very impressed with how this course is going so far. I appreciate having a short presentation on the topic each week then having the opportunity to discuss the topic with other group members. I have learned a lot from the readings as well as from other group members. By having everyone share their ideas and thoughts, I feel that I have gotten more out of this course than I had expected. With everyone coming from different educational backgrounds and experiences, it has been interesting to be exposed to different ideas and perceptions on some of these topics. In addition, having group members question and challenge my ideas have promoted me to think more in-depth and explore more closely about the topics. As of right now, there seems to be no issues with my group. Everyone participates in weekly discussions as well as writing the summary. Ideas and opinions are shared in a respectful manner
The two major health components covered in this class was physical health and social health. Physical health “refers to the way that the body function.” This definitely consist of regular exercise. Since the class was mainly consisted of strength training exercises, it gave older adults strength and energy. This can play a major role in preventing some illnesses. Social health is the quality of one’s relationship with his/her friends and family. I feel like the instructor was also trying to get older adults to work together during the exercises. I saw older adults helping each other out when it came to stretching. This would be a good class for older adults to attend if they wanted to meet new people. The

Hello Jennifer, nice post! I learned about Healthy People 2020 in my Wellness Concepts class. This governmental health initiative is an excellent one, as the aim is to not to just increase “life expectancy” but to increase a “healthy life expectancy.” Healthy People 2020 focuses on wellness, which is multi-dimensional and concerned with quality of life and well-being, rather than plain existing. Today, the major causes of death are heart disease, cancer, and lower respiratory disease, which are all chronic diseases that are lifestyle related. Conversely, in the early 1900’s the causes of death were pneumonia, tuberculosis, and enteritis, which were acute and infectious. Therefore, today we have more of a chance to live a long and healthy life,
5. Heart Disease and Stroke- Through prevention, discovery and treatment of risk factors for heart disease increases cardiovascular health and improve the quality of life. An area in health disparities that I find to be interesting is the disparities among those who are aging. I selected this particular topic due to my interest in working with the elderly population. My goals are to eventually own my own assisted living and memory care facility. Therefore, I want to make sure that I can provide the best care for my residents and make sure they stay healthy. “Aging adults experience higher risk of chronic disease. In 2012, 60% of older adults managed 2 or more chronic conditions. This is something to be aware about, especially while having my own assisted living and memory care facility to make sure that we are being aware of the symptoms to better the elderly’s health. Some chronic conditions are heart disease, stroke and cancer.
Through numerous programs, opportunities, and challenging coursework, University of Pennsylvania did not just provide its students with new knowledge that they would use in the future, but also prepare them to enter their chosen profession. At University of Pennsylvania, my learning abilities will bloom as a bud turning into a bright flower. Foundations of public health from my perspective is a great course to begin the Masters of Public Health program due to its broad spectrum of covering all areas of public health, networking opportunities, and to gain direction into a concentration. Due to the course being broad since it is covering many topics I hope to build a basic foundation in each different concentration to get a feel of the program and what to expect. Coming in from an undergraduate program and trying to adjust to the Master of Public Health program, I feel like the foundations in Public Health course is a good transition to ease into classes. The course will also freshen up my memory on current public health topics and issues. Aside from the transition and freshening

Taking into account the data were given in lecture, confirmation demonstrates that a portion of the main sources of death in the United States, for example, heart disease, cancer, stroke, lung diseases, injuries, and HIV/AIDS, regularly can be averted by enhancing individual wellbeing propensities.
