I feel both research methods are equally important in providing information to help different healthcare disciplinarians improve their practice. Preferring a qualitative approach over ta quantitative one is dependent on the answers sought by the individual researcher. Nursing research studies will provide answers to clinical questions and inspire changes that increase patient safety and care. Health care clinicians will use their expertise and experience to analyze research studies and determine which studies provide credible evidence to support any changes they decide to incorporate into their practice. Evidence-based practice is relied on by professional nurses in order for them to make informed decisions as well as apply critical thinking skills directly to the patient care they provide. The research process allows the nurse to ask and answer questions systematically to ensure the decisions they make are based on sound science. Research provides the evidence needed for nurses to practice based off scientific evidence rather than by tradition (Houser, 2013). Nursing research is fundamental to the practice and is the central principle that defines the nursing profession.
What similarities and differences can you identify between the nursing process and the research process?
Qualitative research is flexible written form their results are ongoing and their conclusion can be changed while quantitative research is numerical, reliable, specific, data are collected by statistical analysis due to which quantitative are more accurate. Qualitative research uses open questions to find the depth of the information while quantitative research uses closed question, secondary data or experiments due to this it lacks the depth of the information and neglect the effect of the individuals which could be service provider, service users or other staff members.
According to The American Nurses Association (ANA) Evidenced-based practice is a "scholarly and systematic problem-solving paradigm that results in the delivery of high quality healthcare" (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 65). Through the use of evidence-based practice nurse and other health care professional have the ability to create clinical decisions, which allows clinical questions to be answered and aid in quality improvement. Furthermore creating a safe, efficient, productive environment for patients and staff that may result in improving patient outcomes and reduce expenses. Nursing research helps health care providers provide evidence-based practice, which may result in quality improvement (Rebar & Gersch, 2015).
The critique a quantitative nursing research study at the level of understanding and analysis, practically do not exist, but the researchers had to be selected in accordance with the results of training, the level of development of their self-study skills before the research and its results. It would be desirable to compare a pool of the data on patients before research and after .
However the research study would have been better if they used qualitative methods to find out the nurse’s perceptions, knowledge and barriers towards evidence based practice in clinical decision making. Majid, et al. (2011) could have interviewed some of the participants to get detailed descriptions of how they feel about evidence based practice in clinical decision making. This would allow the researches to get an in-depth understanding making the study more valid (Saris and Gallhofer, 2007).
Why should nurses incorporate research? Nurses should incorporate research in their scope of practice to deliver the highest and safest quality health care. This is based on proven scientific evaluation, peer review, combined with one’s clinical experience, critical thinking, and competency. (Stevens, 2013), “research produces the most reliable knowledge about the likelihood that a given strategy will change a patient's current health status into desired outcomes”. With these analyses, I believe that nurses can achieve great outcomes and patient satisfaction. However in our class lecture, Chamberlain College of Nursing (CCN, 2015), states that “research yields evidence upon which nurses may base their practice, i.e., evidence-based practice”. In a nut-shell, nurses’ combine research to improve their scope of practice, innovate nursing concept, and enlarge nursing knowledge (Hood, 2014, p. 243).

Both quality improvement (QI) and research have subtle differences and frequently overlap, which can make it challenging to identify the best option to investigate the problem.
