Going hand in hand with the problem of obesity, what students are eating in school may be causing them to get sick. In the United States, over 215,000 people under the age of twenty suffer from diabetes, according to diabetes.org. Not only is the rate of diabetes increasing rapidly, but the CDC also states that for every 100,000 people in the U.S., twenty-two people die from diabetes. This problem can definitely be avoided. Serving healthier lunches at school would help prevent this disease, and save lives.
A healthier lunch change is happening across schools statewide. Schools have finally realized that students are not eating as healthy as they should be. Schools will began to have healthier students, better food choices, and be able to cut out unnecessary junk foods. If schools change to healthier lunches, students will begin to become healthier themselves. Students will receive better nutritional value from the change in their lunches. Although students will vote against the change in food, they slowly realize the school is doing this help them achieve better health. Also, students will receive better energy and bodily functions from new and improved lunches. Students will gain increased vitamins and minerals from the which they were not currently receiving Healthier lunches will bring better food choices to students. It will replace normal, unhealthy foods with more nutritious, healthier
School lunches are not the epitome of meals in the world. Raising the level of nutritional output would highly increase the healthiness of the student’s body. For example, if a child were to drink only water at school the health benefits would help that student, just by cutting out the sugar and the calorie intake. If schools were to serve grilled chicken instead of fried chicken, the student would not have that extreme carb intake just from the fried part alone. Chicken and vegetables should be the entrée for most school lunches, of course, this does not allow for a great variety of meals, but the healthiness of the students would increase over time and could possibly be the healthiest thing they eat that day, but the only thing that they eat at all. The poverty in Mississippi is abundant, which may mean that children do not get three square meals a day, but maybe only one, which is at school. Therefore, the best way to affect student’s healthiness is by putting good, nutritious, and energizing food on the plate in front of
Since 2009 Schools have been improving there healthy choices of food like fresh fruits and salad bars, but those foods take longer to eat (Hellmich). Turning school lunches into an actual sit down meal rather than a feeding frenzy is a good way of improving health (Parker-Pope). Students usually have less than 20 minutes to eat lunch which makes it less likely for them to choose the healthy choice (Elsevier). Kids often like to eat there favorite foods first, not giving them enough time to eat the healthy food (Hellmich). An increase in school lunches could encourage students to eat the healthier choice(5 Elsevier). School nutritionist suggest that students need to have atlas 20 minutes to eat (Hellmich). Research shows that when people consume meals faster they take in more calories because they get hungry sooner (Chen). The shorter lunch periods are starting to lead to more and more obese and overweight kids ( Hellmich). Doctors are saying there are more and more kids getting diabetes and other illnesses due to the lunches and something needs to be done about it
The food that is served at schools has too much fat. You don’t want to be fat do you? People bully others that are fat. This is why we need healthy lunch! If we don’t start getting healthy lunches, we are going to have to start packing our lunches. School lunch contains fat vitamins.
As a society, we must address the school lunch issue if we expect to get a handle on the obesity epidemic. Providing nutritional, tasty, kid-friendly lunches are a necessary piece of this complex puzzle. Obesity is a medical condition caused by an excess in body fat, and can cause many health problems.
Schools should serve healthier lunches to benefit both the students and the schools. It benefits both the school and the students because eating healthy can improve academic performance. The students academic performance helps the school look good. Students who don't eat health tend have a hard time concentrating in class and don't
It is no secret that school lunches are unhealthy. The problem is that on a daily basis will cause us problems beyond our childhood and into our future down the road. Eating a unhealthy meal here and there in moderation is one thing but eating unhealthy food's on a daily basis for more than half a year for over 13 years can cause obesity, lead to physical problems and lastly mental health issues. The schools are responsible for us when we are not at home and they claim they do what’s best for us but foods high in calories, fat and sugars is not what I would call doing a good job. The school system will argue that if we offer healthier alternatives that the students would not eat it and just throw it away.
One in three Americans kids are obese or over weight which is a staggering and alarming rate at the same time. So looking 20 years into the future that number could double if nothing is said and done about what we are eating. The public school food in school lunches are unhealthy for many alarming reasons, but not much can be done immediately due to strict guidelines and budgets that schools must follow. A lot of it goes to kids not exercising, and more time watching TV, or playing on the computer. And now days more families have less time to make nutritious home made meals. So they tend to eat School cafeteria lunches that have minimal nutrition’s and harmful calories. To prevent your kid from being over weight mean adapting what you eat, and having to exercise at least 60 minutes a day. If the changes are made to change school lunches, it can help them from being obese, children can improve their lifestyle choices, and lastly it prevents them from getting harmful diseases.
In February 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama launched the Let’s Move! campaign, an initiative whose primary goal was to eliminate childhood obesity within one generation of children to set the path for a brighter, healthier future. She planned to accomplish this by promoting more physical activity for children, better food labeling, and healthier food in schools. The First Lady rapidly gained the support of thousands of schools, institutions, and companies including Disney, the US Olympic Committee, The US Department of Defense, and many more. However, all of the support Michelle Obama received was answered with strong criticism for the campaign. All agree that obesity is a terrible issue that needs to be fixed but many believe that the means of implementing such a campaign that she suggested would end up only making matters worse.
School lunches are different in different schools, the meals and the sides. Obesity in the population has grown a lot in America. Schools giving out unhealthy foods to children is making the problem even worse.
High School Students wait all day for lunch, not just to socialize but to actually eat. I know changing to a healthier lunch menu os a good idea because not only would make high school students happier but it would also make their parents happy, make students healthier, and get them through the rest of the school day energized. Unhealthy lunches can make students lazy throughout the rest of the school day, gain weight, and make kids sick. if students are coming to lunch and not putting the right type of foods in their body that's not good because that can translate to body composure in class and also make students lazy and not want to do anything because of all the grease, fat, etc that their lunch meal is giving off. say a student has PE
Although there are many students that have diabetes eating disorders through the United states school lunches are the most well fed for many children around the world. Many around do not have dinner on the table for of children low fat foods are being place in many school lunches they should not be in the Cafeteria.
Obesity can often be the consequence of living in a household that instill unhealthy eating habits. Schools can be a positive influence on teens early in life so that obese teens can lead into their adult lives with healthier habits. With these healthier habits, they may likely have more energy to become positive influences in others lives to be healthy and be able to do more. If schools can make such an impact on students’ lives, they should try, even if they needed to sacrifice extra money or instructional time. In 2007, there was a study that only one fifth of high school students had eaten fruits and vegetables at least five times a day in a week (Wexler, 2010). While it is unreasonable to force someone to eat these foods, if they are regularly offered as part of school lunches, students may eat them if they have finished the rest of their lunch and are hungry. Schools should be encouraged to even add fruits and vegetables to vending machines for healthier options.
Have you ever taken a bit in your school lunch and just want to spit it all back out? Or how about the little portions you get? These types of school lunches should not be allowed to be given to the students because there are many reasons why school lunches are bad for health reasons. Although the school lunches are supposed to be healthier and better for our well-being, school lunches should change because it’s not very appetizing, there are little portions, and there isn’t any difference in the health level before.
Schools are to blame for the type two diabetes epidemic because they have access to healthier foods and are choosing not to give them to students. They are valuing their profits over their student’s health and, therefore, putting them in danger of diabetes and obesity. Many parents have no other option but to allow their kids to consume the food given to them by the schools. Schools offer free or reduced price lunches for children without access to much food at home. This is a kind act, without it many students would have to go without lunch or breakfast during the school week, but the food given to the students is unhealthy, often times being processed or high in sugars. Of course, the schools aren’t in complete control of what they feed their students. Their funding, from the government, is extremely low, and rules passed by the USDA make it hard to provide healthy food for students.
