In this experiment, I study how likely individuals are to help another person when they view that they are physically handicapped in accomplishing a simple task. This experiment could potentially demonstrate how people might be uncomfortable in helping a person when they are handicapped in some physical way. Within this experiment, the conceptual independent variable is using crutches while struggling to simultaneously try to pull a door open. The dependent variable is then measured when a participant helps by physically opening the door. When conducting the experiment, ten trials will be done with no obvious displays of struggling when trying to open the door, while the other ten I will demonstrate blatant struggle when trying to open the door. When obvious signs of struggle are demonstrated when using the crutches and trying to open the door, participants will help more often than when no signs of struggle are demonstrated. When people observe someone struggling in such a simple, low risk task, they feel more inclined to help. There would therefore, be no harm or high risk that could negatively affect them. In addition to this, as a society, we are taught to be nice to those who are less privileged than us. Comparing the hypothesis that more participants will help based on the low risk and the obvious signs of struggle can be validated when looking at past studies. In a study completed by Miller and Werner (2007), a significant predictor of helping behavior is that one
Being a responsible parent wanting your child with the best living environment and attending a great school for their education. Parents want to the foremost in their child’s best interest. Children do not know what necessary good is or bad for them. That is why it is as parent job to teach them as they growing up. Mold them right as a child therefore in their adult life most likely they will head down the right positive path. Even before the parent leaves the world they want to see their child being independent taking care of their self and doing well. This all will show the parent they did a splendid job as their father or mother. It is not an easy job being a parent and it does not come with an instruction book how to be one but, you can just do the best you can avoiding negative things around your child as much as possible.
Just having this type of help on a daily basis can improve their overall health and well-being.
The most difficult part of working with disabled adults for me personally is having patients and remembering the circumstances. When I do any task, I want it to be done perfectly whether its cleaning, making dinner, or doing laundry I have a certain way I like things to be done. When my clients try to help, me do these things if they aren’t done the way I like I get annoyed sometimes. I have too constantly remind myself that I am not in my house and that my client isn’t doing it wrong they just aren’t doing it the way I would do it. I also have to remind myself how I would feel if somebody came into my house and tried to do everything little thing for me. I would feel useless and helpless; these thoughts help me to see things clearly and back
1.2 Explain why, traditionally, people with disabilities have been discouraged or prevented from taking risks.
When I see a person with a disability, either physically or mentally, I end up taking a second look. The first idea that pops in my head is what is wrong with the person. I know it sounds very rude of me, but it is an instinct. Modern day society has shaped us to be weird around others who have disabilities. It saddens me to see people in the world judge those who are disabled, however I tend to do the same thing at times.
Getting unexpected help in life can mean so much to an individual that doesn’t usually receive help when needed. “Bill Ward, the last of the almost two dozen social workers who have had a hand in my rearing by the state of Ohio” (pg.238). Bill Wards was Antwone social worker who advised him to get his life together before turning eighteen or else he would become homeless. Wards wanted the best for Antwone but because he didn’t see that Antwone would get mad when he recieved advice from people. When a person grows up alone they usually don’t take life serious and thinks it’s a joke. It takes one induvial to turn a person life around for

These workers can assist an individual or group in crisis by providing direct intervention, by identifying alternative coping skills, or by consulting with others. A helper's primary goals in a crisis are to identify, assess, and intervene; to return the individual to his/her prior level of functioning as quickly as possible; and to lessen any negative impact on future mental health. Sometimes during this process, new skills and coping mechanisms are acquired, resulting in change (Sandoval, 1988).
The development of different models of disability proposed diverse, and often opposite views on the relationships between the disabled people and the rest of the society (White et al., 2010). The ideas and models developed from the dependence model, that existed for a long time, to independent living model and transformation of the idea of caring for disabled (Cameron, 2014, p.21), to the idea of interdependence that, to some extent, is opposite to independence model (White et al., 2010).
Understand the legislation and policies that support the human rights and inclusion of individuals with learning disabilities.
Another variable is that the greater the number of bystanders typically results in a decrease of any intervention (Paull, et al., 2012). People who really want to help out usually put being accepted into a group, or society over their want to intervene. Although this seems like something only a “follower” would participate in, the average person, regardless of morals and values, will not help someone out if they feel that it will result in them not being accepted. In some cases a person starts out by not conforming to a group, but once they notices that no one has followed suit they will quickly stop what they are doing and join in with the other people around them. A lot of people will have a hard time believing this because of people’s inability to admit to being concern with fitting in, but has been tested and scientifically proven.
In the world, it is so easy to walk past an individual that is in distress without even knowing that there is something wrong. People notice something and expect the individual in front of or behind them to assist the distressed, and it happens more than often. For example, driving past an individual that is stranded on the side of the road is so simple. It is much easier to drive past than assist, especially when driving on a city street. Many people think about helping, and want to help, but they just do not.
Another obvious physical disability is an individual's confinement to a wheelchair. People who cannot walk under their own power are usually at a great disadvantage. Many times there are no special considerations made for these people. Even some typical expressions demonstrate this lack of compassion, such as "I have to run to the store", or "I'm going for a walk." People in wheelchairs are often considered weak and unable to care for themselves. However, some advances have been made in our society that encourages the independence of these people. Wheelchair ramps, handicap parking, and cuts in the curb of sidewalks are just some of the more obvious changes that have been made to better accommodate these people. But some problems may still occur for people in wheelchairs. Some hallways and doors may not be wide enough for the chair to fit through and when it is icy outside it is very easy to slide if the pavement is not sanded properly.
Social and cultural pressures, as well as beliefs about the self will influence helping behaviors. In an emergency, both informational and normative social influences are impacting whether an individual helps another. People look for queues from others in order to determine if the current situation requires action to be taken. Also, people will do things simply to be accepted by the group (Aronson et al., 2013). In any
