Advisory is unproductive and often causes students to overlook the time as a study hall and a waste. After interviewing a few teachers, a majority have a negative disposition towards advisory itself as they were all homeroom teachers. Teachers felt that sometimes it is difficult for a student or two to command a classroom effectively and that the advisory program fell pray to college resume padding. In our experiences sometimes the advisors are unprepared, enthusiastic or even not present sometimes resulting in teachers having to deal with the responsibilities of the student advisor. This along with the irrelevent topics such as designing a hero in which a teacher said was productive while others say it was not genuine to the objectives stated in their mission statement as well as an underwhelming amount of content. This along with the time of advisory itself is often an hindrance.
To participate in the Lyceum Scholars Program would be a manifestation of my desires for my own education and for my future. This program would allow me to take my own interests in the political affairs of my nation, and the world, and pursue them as a means of helping my society. This program contains the greatest variety of tools for one to truly study the implications of American freedom. Through this program, my already-developed sense of freedom, both socia and economic, could be nurtured and increased by the numerous tools provided. I would hope to grow in knowledge and become learned, not just educated, on the subject of liberty. Growing up in rural North Carolina to a simple family, I have seen the importance of hard work as a means
I am an AVID Tutor at my old high school Sierra Vista High School in Baldwin Park. This is going to be my second year working at SVHS and so far I love working at this school and helping the students. I work with sophomore, junior and, senior students. AVID is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. It is also a program that motivates students to try to go to college. As an AVID tutor, I am responsible for helping the students by tutoring them in small groups in a specific subject matter (Math-History) by using homework/lesson discussion in groups. We use the Socratic questioning to get students to think critically about a problem they are struggling on and help them when they really cannot solve the question they have. I try to find resources (videos, notes, textbooks) to help the students get a better understanding of their question. Every Friday I grade
For the majority of my life, I had never really known of the diverse lifestyles of others. I could only infer that every person I met was raised in a nurturing environment like mine. As I hit adolescence I began to see the surprisingly harsh as well as the fortunate realities that exist in lives of people just like me. I also became aware of the beliefs of others and I was willing to accept and be tolerable to individuals whose circumstances and beliefs differed from mine; however, my new-found perception would not be put to the test until I joined a Career and Technical Education organization called SkillsUSA.
This theory has three sections that evolve overtime, as students learn to answer their own questions and/or seek answers. The advisor’s role in learning-centered advising revolves around helping connect the dots, so the student can progress further.
Academic Advisors have been needed for as long as there have been higher education institutions. America established its first collegiate institutions in the eighteenth century. It was during the nineteenth century “Faculty within specialized curricula took charge of guiding students to the classes they needed” (Gillespie, 2003). Today, the field of academic advising encompasses all of those same needs from the nineteenth century and more. The needs of students have changed and expanded drastically from when America 's first colleges were established. It is not uncommon for an advisor to assist the student in not only selecting which classes they should take but also helping them to determine what career they should have. Essentially that advisor is taking on the responsibility of facilitating the planning of a student 's next four years and their next forty years as well.
My name is Alauna Torres and I am a student in the eleventh grade at Inderkum. I work hard to maintain grades in the IB Diploma program and struggle, just as any other student does. Last year, I joined Inderkum’s first swim team in six years. After practicing everyday for two hours, I made a bond with many people on my team. As a team, we couldn 't wait to get out of school, huddle together in the atrium, share food, stories, jokes, and insecurities. We tried to get everyone involved, hoping they wouldn’t feel alone or unimportant. As peers around, our job can’t always be fulfilled if our teachers, staff, and coaches don’t do the same to their students.

The advisor that I chose to shadow was Joseph Sandoval, an EOP&S Counselor at East Los Angeles College. My reasoning for choosing to shadow Joseph was a result of my curiosity of getting to know how large program like EOP&S function and my previous academic advising experience I have with him. I was fortune to be apart of the advising sessions with Joseph, as the range from one extreme case to a not so extreme case. The shadowing experience provided a rich source how material we discuss in class is applicable in real life situation. Within this paper I plan to discuss briefly what I learn from my interview with Joseph then talk about my observations of the three advising sessions I was apart of.
Counseling in schools has developed immensely over the past few centuries. The role of the guidance counselor has developed dramatically since it was first established as a necessity in schools. Counseling began in the late 1800s, originally limited to vocational guidance and advice giving from teachers who took on dual roles (Schimmel 2008). The research explains it was "an outcome of the American public school's response to the Industrial Revolution, the vocational counselor was often a teacher who inherited the position of counselor along with a list of duties to
Have you ever felt that you don’t get the respect that you deserve? David Greenberg was a 6th grader at Harman Middle school. Just like all 6th graders, the start of middle school can be really tough. Especially when you lose your best friend right before school starts. David became kind of famous online, but at school no one really acknowledges him for it. In the meantime, David has to deal with bullies and loneliness. When David is happy, he is with friends and family but while he is unhappy, he is alone. At the end, things do work out and David has friends but he isn’t always untroubled. I think David isn’t always happy but has a lot of fun at Harman Middle School.
In the article “The Truth about New York City’s Elite High Schools”, the author criticized the sole-criterion admission system for eight NYC specialized high schools. This system judge all the students depends on only one thing—the test score of SHSAT( Specialized High School Admission Test). It seems like a fair condition that gives every student an equal opportunity, but the reality is a much different story. The result of this “fair” system is that only about 10 percent of students in all eight specialized high schools of NYC are African students or Latino students. Based on this result, the author suggests that this system is unfair to African or Latino students.
Supervision is important for continued growth as a professional school counselor (Hess, Magnuson, & Beeler, 2012). Throughout my internship my relationship with my supervisor has been educational and productive for my continued growth. A strength includes that my supervisor provides timely constructive feedback about my skills and about cases. This evaluation helps me to grow and deepen my skills in order to become more effective with students. Another strength is that she helps me to further my knowledge about specific programs or services that are offered in the community that our students can benefit from. With her sharing this knowledge, she truly is supporting me in becoming a better school counselor. One limitation with our relationship is that sometimes she does not have an answer to my questions, however, this is usually due to an administration question that has not been answered. For example, one question that I have asked is why we cannot have an army or air force representative come to do a presentation to our seniors similar to how colleges come to the campus and do presentations. We have several students that

School counselors have a key role in advocating for academic success for each student in the school. The advocacy makes the counselors have a leadership role in encouraging and promoting school reforms. The advocacy efforts of school counselors aim to eliminate obstacles preventing the development of students and to create chances for all students to learn. It also aims to ensure students have access to the school curriculum that fits their needs.
