Throughout my years of being a student I’ve written several pieces for several different classes, some I may flaunt just a bit while with other pieces I try to just turn in, get a grade, and then hide in the back of a folder in order to keep others from seeing the slightly subpar work I may have produced. While I always do try to write eloquently there has always been that one assignment in that one class in which I just try my hardest to get a good grade rather than write something I’m particularly proud of. For example, last year for AP World History I produced a well formatted, well researched paper on the Guatemalan genocide. While it was written properly I feel as though I could have provided more depth and insight on the topic being …show more content…
I do know that these are not the types of papers that I can just write in order to please a teacher by following an outline to get a good grade, these are papers that require a different type of comprehension as to the topic you’re writing. Being able to reflect back onto the papers I’ve done in high school, book reports in particular, it’s clear as to which mistakes I’ve made in my writing. One of the errors that I am probably most guilty of is not writing to a proper audience. The first thing I’m usually thinking when writing a paper is “will this appeal to my teacher?” and “is this good enough to score an A?” and I don’t believe that’s a particularly good way to go about writing when in college. Rather than speaking solely to your professors, it’s important to be sure a wider array of people can enjoy or relate to what it is you’re writing. For example I’m sure this paper in particular could appeal to many high school students, because I’m sure we’re all guilty of making this mistake when
Throughout the progression of this course I learned countless things concerning my writing. {Simkin, M. G., Crews, J. M., & Groves, M. J. (2012). While it’s there’s a many amounts of things ‘ve learned throughout the course, there are several things I‘ve learned which include the step by step process, including the correct usage of grammar and properly proofreading my work before I turn it in. I found out i had a major problem with my punctuation usage and insufficient when it came my periods and commas. I’ve invested some time writing through grammarly and other helpful sites to improve my writing skills. I appreciate the assistance and help I received from Mrs. C
It’s not that I don’t enjoy literature, it’s just I’m not the best with it. The star reading test is what made me realize I’m not the best with literature, in middle school all my friends would always get advanced scores and I would just have basic scores. Sometimes this made me really mad, I want to be good at everything I do and whenever I’m not I get upset.
One of the tips that has really helped me the when writing and improving my writing is, write your thoughts before organizing them. My mind flows when I am writing a paper or thinking about the topic and I sometimes forget to write everything down, so before I write a paper I sit down and really think about my topic, then I just write words and phrases that come to mind so that when I start my paper I have a general idea about what I want to write.

I grew up in a extremely small town outside of Birmingham, and the high school I went to is not known for its academia. If I recall right, my high school english classes assigned only 1-2 papers a year, so writing 4-5 in a semester was a completely new adventure for me. I learned many things in this course that greatly helped me improve my writing. My writing overall improved in style, flow, and basic fundamental writing thought processes, which is all the areas that are hard to learn. I started to see my style and flow had grown bland and very fact based instead of grabbing the attention of the readers. Now that I understand where my writing needs improvement, I can start focusing on those areas and fixing my papers.
Ever since I was young, English has always been one my least favorite subjects throughout school because I did not enjoying writing. Writing always frustrated me because it seemed so time consuming. But as I grew older I came to the realization that writing papers are not as hard as we set it out to be. If you formulate a method to how you will complete the paper, and follow through with it, it makes the entire process so much easier. For example, for all the students who procrastinate with their assignments until the day before it is due. Think about all the time and effort you have to put fourth to complete an entire paper in one day. Imagine how much less effort it would take to simply start working on the assignment at least four days before the required due date. You would only have to spend an hour or two a day to complete the entire essay. All you have to do is develop a plan as to what you want to accomplish each day and a writing strategy to following while writing. Throughout my English courses I have assembled my own writing strategies, and the first step to writing a good essay is pre-writing.
When this semester first started I did not enjoy writing, the process, the grading, and just writing itself. I did not consider myself a good writer, but I knew that I was decent. Most of my papers were decent and I received average and above average grades on them. Even though I received good grades I still did not find myself a good writer. When entering this class, WRTG 120, I was afraid that it would be my hardest class and that I would have a hard time. In other words I was scared, and hearing the writing outcomes for this course did not help. I have heard of most of the outcomes but being able to write using them in writing I knew was going to be hard. In this paper I am going to talk about how I used the five out comes
Writing is such an important tool. It has the capacity to empower both the reader and writer. There is even a famous proverb that says, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” That’s why it makes sense for the majority of my academic career to be geared towards the improvement of my writing. There is no denying that there is an infinite number of ways that I can improve my writing. After writing multiple essays for this English 100 Y class, my professor pointed out certain aspects of my writing that I could work on. Two of those suggestions stuck out to me because it seemed as though I was making these mistakes multiple times throughout various forms of writing. One of the mistakes I make is the use of ‘favorite’ words, or words that I use too many times in the same paper; another is that I use choppy sentences while writing my essays.
Coming into the 3D program, I was none too excited about taking any general studies classes, including freshman composition. English class has always been the one class I have always had a disdain for. In high school, English was all about reading literature and being told to write several pages on a topic seemingly unrelated without any direction to guide us. Upon coming to Freshman Composition, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the class was nothing like those classes. I feel as if I have learned many things and developed greatly as a writer throughout these last months shown in this portfolio. The main improvements of mine consist of my ability to manage time, my ability to structure paragraphs, and my ability to improve my papers through my own writing process.
When I turned in my short story to my teacher I ended up getting a "A" on my paper. I was very pleased with my grade. But most importantly, I was more impressed with my dedication towards writing this paper. There were times that I could
As a high school student taking on a college course, I acknowledged and accepted the challenge that lay ahead of me. The main reason I selected Composition I and II was that it allowed me to vastly improve my overall writing skills. Developing my techniques will benefit me when I am required to compose any writing assignments for my future college classes. Therefore, with that goal in mind, I chose to take this class while still attending high school. I began this class as an average writer; additionally, I did not know the majority of the writing rules or how to make an essay meet its potential. Over the course of these two classes, I believe that I have proven my writing to be more seamless and interesting to read.
I, one of millions of first-year college students, believe that I write bland essays due to the fact that my high school English teachers failed to teach me how to think clearly and creatively. For instance, with my twelfth English teacher, Mrs. Tuttle, there are many cases to which I felt she could’ve improved her teachings not only for me to understand how to write a well-developed paper but as well as others students. First case scenario being how she gave class activities and her teaching style. She had a way of giving activities based on the feeling of how she felt would be a good way for us to learn the material versus what we felt would be the best way to learn the material. These ways included little to no group work. Writing a bunch of illegitimate papers that would be graded by my peers who had little to no idea of what right or wrongs they were looking for. Thus for leaving me with an ambiguous reason to what my writings were lacking or why I never made anything higher than a C in her class. Another way would be the fact that she lived off the teaching theory of “if one can do it then all can do it”. This hands down was the number reason why I could never write a well thought out, clear and creative paper. With this method she felt that if Amanda Ho, class valedictorian, could write an outstanding paper, then the entire Class of 2015 could write one just as well. Never coming to an understanding that everyone wasn’t Amanda Ho, everyone didn’t have the brains
Throughout middle school my classes were all the same, I showed up, learned, received my assignments, and left. There was one class that was different; it was my Language Arts class. The teacher’s name was Mrs. Lorentsen and she was not the average teacher. For example, in her class we rarely had lectures and I can remember vividly my adventures with her. We completed assignments that were called Independent Study Projects (ISPs), Common Place Books (CPBs), and completed 3D book reports. These are all different ways of presenting information through creativity and problem solving. These foreign type assignments seemed strange at first, as they are different from a traditional classroom setting. I quickly adjusted to her classroom, and learned that I enjoyed this style of learning. Throughout the class Mrs. Lorentsen and I both noticed a commonality in my writing. Putting my thoughts and opinions on paper became a struggle for me.
Life is all about learning from all the opportunities you’re given; every experience you live, will have a teaching worth keeping. Famous founding father of the United States of America once said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Learning is a process which requires practice as well as determination, one who isn’t determined to fulfill his tasks and focus on the important will never fit into the process of learning. Intermediate College Writing is the second step towards developing the correct writing skills for the future and for your success. With no correct writing skills and without knowing how to express yourself through words, the road to success will be split into several roads, one longer than
One of the high points of the class was consistently making high A’s. We wrote a variety of different types of papers, and my grade was always respectable. Succeeding in this class made me feel adequately prepared to write proper papers. Although I made impressive grades for the class, I was able to do so with only minimal effort. Therefore, I knew I could execute my papers better. The quality of my writing seemed to stay stagnant over the course of the year. This class would have been exponentially more beneficial had it challenged me to improve my writing, however it never did.
