In the 21st century, everyone has heard of the frightening HIV and AIDS virus. The disease we first discovered in 1983 in Arica, when it killed millions of people, especially poor people and travelers. In the developing countries, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are considered a death sentence, the world over, it is a frightening virus that has killed many people.

It is hard to think of a place that HIV and AIDS is more drastic in Africa than in the Sub-Saharan part of Africa. Whereas, you hear that HIV AND AIDS is common in low and middle income countries and Sub-Saharan Africa in one of them.

If left untreated, AIDS can evolve, this is when a person’s immune system becomes too weak to fight infection and can no longer defend itself (What is AIDS). It will compare and contrast HIV in the United States and in Kenya. Overall, the crisis of HIV/AIDS, especially in sub-Saharan Africa is still a major issue. Perhaps the biggest factor is that developed nations have become fairly complacent when considering the disease, as not only has its prevalence dropped significantly in most areas, but treatment through anti-retroviral regimens has managed to increase an infected person’s lifespan to a level almost matching an uninfected person’s average lifespan. Those in sub-Saharan Africa face several key issues with this disease. A lack of education regarding HIV/AIDS and a lack of health care facilities and medication to combat HIV/AIDS are perhaps two of the largest. The country unfortunately faces an upcoming crisis, with the youngest generation’s parents and caregivers becoming too sick or succumbing to the disease before vital education, such as the ability to farm a landscape suffering from desertification, is passed on (Sowing Seeds of Hunger).

When it comes to HIV/AIDS, it is still today regarded as the most critical epidemic that affects a significant number of people in the world’s population. HIV statistics for the end of 2013 indicate that around 35 million people are currently living with HIV worldwide, 38 percent less than in 2001. In the same year, around 2.1 million people became infected with HIV and 1.5 million died of AIDS-related illnesses. Harmful diseases have taken over today’s world. There is drug abuse and inappropriate sexual behaviors causing this epidemic. Individuals of our society are not taking pride in their bodies. Therefore the endless results are disease and death. One certain disease known as AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), is a huge health concern among people of the world. The question is, “what does this disease do to the population?”

HIV attacks and kills cells that help the body fight off illness. Symptoms appear at different times for each individual, for some it takes a year and for others it takes ten years. As with many problems, the reason HIV and AIDS is so rampant is due to the lack of knowledge and education about the issue. Simply by educating the public on what HIV and AIDS are, as well as preventative measures, it would greatly reduce the risk of transmission. Each year, the numbers of those who are infected continue to rise. With over 33.4 million individuals already who have already contracted the virus, research continues in hopes for a cure for both HIV and AIDS.
