Homiletics: Chapter 1 Of Romans

Not only is our human existence and spiritual life dependent upon God but also our own decisions. God has blessed us with beautiful land, relationships, and His never-ending love for us. In romans it gives us a great diversity of how we should view the Christian life, including, the natural world, human identity, human relationships, and culture. This book goes into such great depth in the first eight chapters that I had to read it and completely break it down a hundred times. In just the first eight chapters is goes from Gods faithfulness in justifying, blessing, and adoring us by our faith through his grace.

The purpose behind this paper is to offer a brief review on a book called “Reading Romans in Context: Paul and Second Temple Judaism” . This review will focus on four major components, first being the editor’s information. The editor’s information will cover education, any positions they hold today, and whatever scholarship information that is currently available. The second thing that will be reviewed will be a concise summary of the major theme of the book followed by the third, an honest and courteous evaluation of the book. The fourth thing that will be added is a bibliography at the end of the paper for reference of the book.

The first chapter goes back in history and sets up the story and setting. It was the eighteenth century and the Americans were beginning to invade the lands west of the Mississippi River. This caused problems because even though Americans saw the lands as an unoccupied

The book of Romans teaches us a considerable amount about various topics of the Christian life. How we should view the natural world, human identity, relationships, and culture are some of the main ones. This essay will discuss the foundations found in Romans which are essential in the formation of a biblical worldview. The letter Paul wrote to the believers in Rome indicates God’s creation is a demonstration of His existence and power (Romans 1:20-21). Romans takes us from our total inability to walk in good works, to God’s faithfulness in justifying, sanctifying, and glorifying us by our faith through his grace.

The book under review is titled, Reading Romans in Context: Paul and Second Temple Judaism, edited by Ben C. Blackwell, John K. Goodrich, Jason Maston with a foreword by Francis Watson.

What they probably mean is that it was not a moral place.” (Burrell, 65) The Romans had innumerable gods that they worshiped which included giving gifts and sacrificing for their gods. Religion primarily used sacrificing as a means of showing appreciation to the gods but later became a way to get things from the gods. The book of Romans is considered, by many in Christianity, to be the greatest book comprised in the Holy Bible. This is a very strong view to hold, considering the great details of Jesus and His ministry that are given in the book of Luke, the direct, to the point style of truth written by James, and the great lessons of faith in Hebrews. The other books in the New Testament are all great within themselves also but, Romans is very distinctive in itself. The Book of Romans Romans is a very important addition to the Bible. This is written by Paul to the Roman church. Much of Romans is showing the righteousness of God in different ways. “Romans road” passages are a great description of how to lead someone to christ (His saving righteousness).

Dr. Elmer Towns and his co-author Ben Gutierrez in their book “In Essence of the New Testament: A Survey” supports the idea and the importance of all Christians grasping the knowledge put forth in the book of Romans. Biblical educators such as Samuel Coleridge and Martin Luther holds Paul’s epistle to the Romans in high esteem (Towns & Gutierrez, 2012). They refer to as “the most profound work in existence and “the purest gospel (Towns & Gutierrez, 2012). These claims are evident when reading Paul’s epistles in the book of Romans, one can feel Jesus Christ’s inspiration in his words and message. In Romans 1:6 -7

Romans is a wonderful letter, written by Paul in 56 A.D. to the believers in Rome. At the time of it’s composition, Paul was in Corinth on his third missionary journey. Paul explains that his audience is the Christians of Rome (1:7), and that his desire is for them to read what he has to say. Paul had always desired to visit the church of Rome, but had not found an opportunity to do so (1:11). Paul’s purpose in writing to the saints of Rome was to proclaim the gospel to both the Greek and Jewish believers. As evidenced in Romans 1:16-17, we can see Paul emphatically and passionately scratching out his letter: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. For in it God’s righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith”. Paul was very intentional and honest to his audience. He wanted his readers from the beginning of his letter to realize that the gospel is for all people. This is important for people to grasp. The gospel is for all people, and that is the theme I would personally use for teaching Romans.

Paul begins the letter of Romans by introducing himself and stating his mission. Concisely stating the gospel message, Paul encourages the Roman Christians to “bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name” (1:5), or for the glory of Jesus Christ. He goes on to write of his desires and intentions to visit Rome in order to preach the gospel of Christ to the Jews as well as the Gentiles. Paul continues by explaining his excitement for the gospel as well as the need to live the gospel out in our lives. Finishing the first chapter, Paul presents the inexcusable idolatry, sinfulness, and evilness of the ungodly.
