Honors College Essay: In its mission statement, the UIC Honors College is described as a community of scholars whose goal is to enrich the education experience of undergraduates and allow the faculty and students of all disciplines to interact in teaching, learning and research. Please tell us “How can you contribute to the Honors College community?” What benefits do you expect in return? (400-500 words)
Throughout my high school career, I have been involved in different professional societies such as the National Society of High School Scholars, Mu Alpha Theta (Math honors society), and Business Professionals of America. My involvement in these societies has made me knowledgeable in the logistics of how to run the society, and have taught me valuable skills such as leadership and collaboration. For logistics, I can help organize events such as fundraising activities or philanthropic events as I am currently on the social committee for Business Professionals of America, which is in charge of organizing social events for my chapter. As an elected member for the social committee, my chapter has shown faith in me for my leadership skills and collaboration skills. Overall, I feel like I can contribute a lot of my skills and knowledge to UIC honors college.

I feel like this would be an opportunity to expand in depth in my discipline, as well as learn in a small classroom setting. Through the honors college curriculum, I feel like I have an advantage over my peers because of the unique quality of classes available to me. The opportunity to take these unique classes would make me into a more well rounded student, more understanding of the problems and challenges regarding the discipline that I choose to study. The Honors College at ECU should admit an exceptional students such as myself because I consider my education to be the paramount element for my success in the near future. Although I am a student athlete I never forsake my education for my sport, track, because I know that my sport will only take me as far as a scholarship to ECU but won't be of much help after that. As I consider my education above my sport, I tutor my team mates in math because that's what they have a hard time understanding. Not only do I tutor but my teammates and I also volunteer around the community by raking leaves and shoveling snow during the fall and winter which helps us out if they would like to support the team with a donation. The Purdue Honors College is an excellent program which would add many great new opportunities to my education. I have always enjoyed a challenge in my education, and the community and resources available would only help to further support this. Primarily, the learning community to which I would be exposed would create an enhanced academic environment, as I would live in the Honors Residence and take Honors courses with a diverse group of individuals who share my passion for learning. Furthermore, being a part of this dedicated community would expose me to a wide range of beliefs and ideas coming from a highly motivated group of individuals and therefore would allow me to further grow as a person.
The Suny Stony Brook Honors College would be a perfect fit for me for a wide array of reasons. Even though I may not seem like a suitable candidate for this program by being part of this program I will gain the extra motivation to work harder at my work. The Honors College provides its students the opportunity to participate in research at its highest level. This is very important to me because in High school I did research at a university and this helped me learn a great deal about the topic and by doing research in Stony Brook I can better understand my major. Joining the Honors College will develop my authenticity, not in the sense that I will be a more honest person, but rather, that I will know more about myself and have better reasoning behind my beliefs. The challenging course load that Honors Students face requires a deeper level of reflection. Students must not only know the material, but have a solid foundation behind it. This forces students to question their worldly views, resulting in a reformed person both socially and academically. Striving for a deeper understanding requires my views to constantly evolve.
A Handbook for Honors Programs at Two Year-Colleges states that most honors staff will write letters of recommendation for their students (James 23). This, of course, aids in SJC honors students’ acceptance into universities. Because of an SJC student’s increased likelihood of being accepted into a university, San Jacinto College becomes more appealing to prospective students, parents, and guardians. This leads to an increased number of students bringing in more money for the college.
For applicants to the Honors College, I would ensure the most qualified candidates admission to the college.We are not just seeking students with a high academic standard, but someone who can utilize and build upon the reputation of this program. To do this, I would ask a simple, logical question. However, it can elicit a multi-level response from students to see how they respond to the question posed. I would ask the question, “What do you intend on achieving while a member of the Honors Program?”

The objective of a college honors program director is to provide a high quality education to its students in order to bring out their full potential. When considering the two students, their individual potential to succeed given their individual experiences and hardships provides a more holistic measure of preparedness than any single test can. Students with similar circumstances to the second student have great potential to grow, as well as fostering growth in their peers, which benefits the entire program. The role of the Honors College in the education of utilizing critical thinking skills should be to further the analytical, communication, and creative thinking abilities of its students. Foremost, the Honors College should expand students’ learning styles by giving assignments and providing study materials that stimulate auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning. In high school, most students will discover the one learning technique that works best for their needs, yet being able to study in multiple perspectives will help students expand their analytical approaches to problem solving.
