Have you ever yelled at the tv while watching a horror movie? There are some rules for surviving a horror movie. The first rule is to think before you do things. The second rule is for you to lock everything. The third rule is to never go into a haunted house. It is very irritating when people in horror movies don’t think that much. The first rule is to think before you do things. A lot of people in horror movies scream while running away, but that just helps the killer find you. Not a lot of people call the police when there is a killer watching them. There are perfectly working phones right next to them, but they never use them. The people alone in a house at night always want to be brave, but they end up dead by morning. If you don’t
If there's one sub-genre of hip-hop that I'm not privy too, then it would definitely be horrorcore. Horrorcore, formed in the early 90s, saw rappers bring up horror-themed subject matter in their rhymes, often discussing topics such as serial killing and satan worship. I often find horrorcore rappers to be gimmicky, and reliant on cheap shocks rather than lyrical prowess (Insane Clown Posse has become a definitive act for the genre for these reasons). That said though, the genre certainly has an important place in hip-hop history, and in many ways bridges the gap between late 80s gangsta rap, with hardcore artists of the late 90s. With the success of gangsta rappers like N.W.A. and The Geto Boys, combined with the fact
Horror movies defy the norm when looking at media theories and arguments. It doesn’t follow mood management theory because no one would possibly watch a movie because they’d like to make their mood darker and sadistic along with the movies plot. One argument that works with horror movies is the idea that they can desensitize the viewer to specific things such as violence in general, or even more specifically violence toward women, especially women who are sexualized in some way. Desensitization is the idea that a person becomes detached to a specific thing such as violence toward women, or begins to believe that something is the norm due to over exposure to something that is down played or glorified.
I have always loved horror movies. I remember when I was a kid my dad and I would watch them a lot. We would bond over bloody and gory movies, and I always thought it was the best thing ever. As I got older I began to realize the differences between the male and female roles in these types of movies. Unlike the romance movies, it seems that women are the strong and protective ones in the horror genre. Romance movies have a strong male lead most of the time, and the main male character would be the protector and the strong one, physically and emotionally. At the complete opposite end of the movie spectrum you have the scary movies, in which the male is usually the first one to die, and he is more than likely the one that got them into that horrible situation in the first place. Take the movies “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Sinister”
Having Halloween just around the corner the horror genre has been on demand. What is a horror genre? Horror is defined as being “an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust” and genre is defined as being “a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter” according to Oxford Dictionary. Therefore a horror genre is a horror film in one of the many categories in a genre that makes the audience feel fear, shock or disgust. Many of the films that everyone watches today are now called movies. Since scary movies have been requested, Netflix has even added a “Halloween favorites” on its search bar.
Horror movies generally are all the same. They all have been based off of something that has already happened or a previous movie. Society has paid to be entertained by these gruesome stories that we all truly fear. Before movies, people would purchase books of similar traumatic events to read in their spare time for amusement. It has been said by the Filmmakers IQ's horror film lesson (2012), that writers such as Bram Stoker created graphic novels that would grab the audience's attention for years to come. But the horror movie, The House Of The Devil (1896), was noted as being the first ever horror movie. And as the years pasted, the industry grew and became stronger. But Ryan Koo (2013) stated that it was not truly until after WWI

Since it’s infancy at the beginning of the eighteenth century, horror has followed certain conventions that results in an awakening of the senses, evoking intense emotions of fear and terror in the audience. Horror feeds off triggering the primal fears embedded within all of humankind, creating a sense of menace that is the very substance of this genre. Furthermore, the central menace of a piece tends to enlighten the human mind to the world of the paranormal and the enigmatic, dark side of the unknown. The movie “Psycho” directed by Alfred Hitchcock is a perfect example. Infamous for its shower scene, but immortal for its contribution to the horror genre, “Psycho” was filmed with great tact, grace and art in regards to horror conventions.
One in four college students in a recent study said they experience lingering effects of a frightful movie or TV experience from childhood. (Bernie DeGroat) Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief the someone or something is dangerous causing pain, or threats. It is not appropriate for middle schoolers to read classic horror stories like “The Tell-Tale Heart”, because they can cause them anxiety and it can make them aggressive after watching scary movies.
Horror can be defined as a genre meant to psychologically trigger individual fear with the presence of certain supernatural or abstract characteristics. The genre is dependent on people’s fascination with unrealism and the sensation that comes from experiencing fear personified into tangible elements on a screen. Horror films have thrilled audiences for decades, revealing stories of the more sinister parts of life. The popular allure that stems from the genre comes from the tension moviegoers experience when aroused by specific stimuli uniquely present in these cinematic features (Walters). Over time, as the genre progressed, the standardized elements found in a typical horror movie began to shift in different directions primarily due to changing societal circumstances and increasing consumer demand for cinematic innovation. The expansive nature of the different codes and conventions within the horror genre, coupled with the evolution of society’s fascination with these characteristics, has led to the mutation of the genre itself in order to allow for unique approaches to a familiar style in response to both economic developments and taste shifts within the consumer industry.
Typically supernatural horrors are set in the home of the protagonist usually their homes as it is closest thing to them. All of the Paranormal activity films are based in the home of the individuals being haunted by the supernatural forces. The invasion of the supernatural forces on the character's home makes the situation even more terrifying as the forces are unwanted and it also makes it harder to escape as it is their home, they cannot exactly uproot their family and move to a different house, especially if it is a new house which is usually the case with Paranormal activity films
Horror films have been around for over 100 years, petrifying people and bringing their worst fears to life but still they can’t get enough of this sick and gory genre that is unbelievably entertaining and captivating to the audience. Horror comes with many sub-genres from your bloody slashers like Friday the 13th to your Supernatural-Horrors like The Exorcist, but in the end they all seem to do their job by scaring you and leaving you with nightmares for weeks on end. Usually Horror’s films have the same character stereotypes such as the nerd, the jock, the slut, the virgin, the junky, the tough hero, the unlikely hero and last but not least the masked murderer, but yet they all play their own part in the making of these horrors movies whether it is the extremely slow walk the killer does but almost always catches the victim, or the unwise decision to split up and investigate where the unusual noise is coming from.
A girl runs frantically through the woods trying to escape an axe wielding villain. The defenseless victim suddenly trips and collapses to the ground. The villain laughs wickedly as he lifts the axe above his head. The girl releases a final scream as the weapon quickly ends her life, causing the audience to go silent as they watch the villain drag away the lifeless body. Death, blood, guts, suspense, screaming, and terror are all just a few things to expect when watching a modern day horror film. What is horror? Horror can be defined as an intense feeling of fear, shock, or disgust. (Wilson) The description of horror is not very pleasant, but for some reason horror films are extremely popular. Why is this so? People are addicted to the
According to King, civilized people enjoy horror movies because it shows that we are not afraid and it is a way to exercise our dark sides. Watching horror movies allows for use to face some of our greatest fears, and once conquered, we feel better about our abilities to face our fears. To begin, I am a huge fan of anything that involves horror. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so naturally I was excited to see what types of horror films the film students of SDSU had come up with it. As I sat through the festival, I noticed how unique each film was in terms of plot. For example, in one film the plot was about a barber who was looking to chop off a woman’s hair to put on his dead girlfriend’s body. It sounds popustraous, but it was well done and it was not a plot I had ever encountered before. Furthermore, the production value and editing of each film was above par. In my opinion, in horror films it can be hard to edit and use audio because one has to be able to build up suspense and fear with those two processes. I believe each film managed to successfully edit and use audio to be able to complete the task of building fear and suspense.
More than any other genre of film, horror is perhaps the one ridiculed almost as often as it is revered. This is because, as the medium continues mellowing, audiences are able to pick up and acknowledge the common situations and stereotypes that have populated it for decades. There also able to make metal representations .While these circumstances were once idiosyncratic and able to shock, now we’ve seen so many flunctuations of the same storys that filmmakers are forced to find new ways to make people shake with fear. So what rules will you need to know to survive in the horror movies nowadays .
