I opted to discuss William J. Clinton, 42nd President of the United States. He served two terms from 1993-2001. He was the third-youngest president taking office at the age of 46 and was the first President from the baby-boomer generation. I wanted to discuss President Clinton for several reasons, one being that he was able to balance the budget while reducing the deficit, in turn leaving the U.S with a surplus in the budget at the end of his term. He signed in to law the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 which required employers to allow employees to take unpaid leave for pregnancy or a serious medical condition without jeopardizing their job. He endorsed the North American Free Trade Agreement, creating the world’s largest free trade leading
Since the founding of the United States of America, many presidents have worked tirelessly in their posts to change our country for the better. Some have seen abounding success, while others have met a slow decline from glory. Of all of these generally noble and brave men, one especially has stood out; Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a remarkable idealist of a man and an amazing vehicle for change in America. While in office, this dignified man demonstrated many positive qualities, such as unrelenting optimism, heartfelt concern for both the populace and the land of America, and fierce determination to accomplish his goals.
Roosevelt has been regarded as one of the presidents that stand out in the most highest of regard. Roosevelt proved to be the leader the American people needed in the 1930’s—a president who provided the psychological lift that helped them endure and survive the great depression. Unlike Coolidge, Roosevelt had a clear and current vision, of which he would apply to get the nation out of the slumps of a bolstering economy and dire straits. With huge challenges like mass unemployment and banks closing their doors, America was in grim need of assistance and direction, and the Roosevelt administration would be the most capable and equipped to end, or at least improve conditions during the recession. Within his first 100 days, FDR would submit a record amount of legislation, all aimed at getting the economy to recover, give relief to the hungry nation, and prepare the government with resources to prevent this kind of depression from happening again. This would become his legacy and plan of action coined as The New Deal. Agencies and legislation was created to turn the tide of the economy. Some examples include the establishing of the Civilian Conservation Corp that provided hundreds of thousands of jobs. Also, the Civil Works Administration would put nearly 4 million people to work building post offices, painting murals, paying artists for plays and film. The highest achievement is quite possibly the Social Security act, providing a guaranteed retirement system for the elderly over the age of 65; all funded by workforce pay and not by the government. It is clear FDR had a strong vision for America that influence his decisions about implementing policy the administration believed would end the recession. Not all acts and agencies passed through congress, and some agencies were also struck down by the judicial branch when found unconstitutional. Towards the end of FDR’s time in the white house, World War
As far as politics go, when President McKinley was assassinated in 1901, his vice president, Theodore Roosevelt took over, who proved to be the first president of this life changing era. As soon as he took office, Roosevelt implemented his “Square Deal”, which addressed his three primary concerns: control of corporations, consumer protection, and conservation. Controlling the corporations was a big part
There have been over 40 presidents in the history of the United States. There have been 43 presidents to be exact. Of these 43 Presidents of the United States, there are only about 15 of whom the average American might know. However, the most famous of these Presidents are George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These two amazing leaders of our country have shown the world what it really means to be a good example to those who follow them. They are men of honor and made this great nation a beautiful and free place to live. Their love for their country and the steps that they took to becoming amazing and passionate leaders are ideas that we, as citizens of the United States, should be aware of. The childhood, the steps they took to careers
“A whole generation of Americans had grown up knowing no other president. He was a presence in their living rooms, he had called them my friends, and he had been at the helm of the two worst crisis of the century.” (“FDR”) The people loved his optimism and his sympathy with the less fortunate. (Perkins, 7) He was the people’s champion and they elected him to office four consecutive times. (Schlesinger, Time) President Roosevelt rescued America during the hardship that was the great depression. His decision to enter World War II played a substantial role in defeating fascism. Roosevelt believed in a multilateral effort in ending conflicts around the world. Franklin D. Roosevelt left an indelible mark of progress on American history.
When presenting the question of who deserves the title of best President of the United States, one would not be surprised to find Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, and FDR as the frontrunners. While each of these presidents was undisputedly successful and groundbreaking in their own right, all fall short to America’s first modern president- Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt, assuming office at the turn of the century, redefined and reimagined the role of the president and the executive officialdom. By expanding the powers of the presidency, Roosevelt was able to move the country forward in both the international arena and on the home front. Roosevelt’s vast success can greatly be attributed to his charisma, character, and persuasion skills. He understood that the art of governing was truly the power to persuade, and he mastered the trade. Roosevelt not only improved life domestically as he fought against inequality and corrupt business practices, but he also achieved his goal of gaining influence abroad, thus earning the United States a powerful platform on the global stage. Roosevelt’s natural leadership, charm, bravery, and compassion combined with his thorough understanding of the country’s needs, both for the individual and for the long-term well being of the country, made him the most successful president in United States history.
Two presidents have been etched into America's collective consciousness as ambitious goal-setters. Although more than fifty years separated their presidencies, they could be considered parallel presidents. Andrew Jackson and Theodore Roosevelt in essence were considered ahead of their time due to their policies and actions. Those policies and actions are seen currently after almost two centuries later. Andrew Jackson was a fierce and aggressive president thus he was named Old Hickory. He was in the most important wars in American history, the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, he was very loyal to his nation. The people voted for him for one reason, to be the People’s President. His childhood instilled in him appreciation for the common man. He was a poverty stricken man, meaning he related to most of the people in the country. And his actions that could be considered tyrannical, they were for very important intentions, because he strengthened his power of presidency to veto the bank. He did this because it was harmful to the economy and it only helped the rich. Similarly, Theodore Roosevelt was also the people’s president. Roosevelt was an author, naturalist, explorer, historian and a politician. His policies could be parallel to the policies set by Andrew Jackson. Even though he was born into aristocracy, he had values and customs of respecting his own country and people. He preserved the rights of nature
Grover Cleveland is the President that I chose for my final project. Grover Cleveland was known for being an honest and trustworthy politician. However, he is probably best known for being the only United States President who was elected to two, non-consecutive terms in office (Krull, 45). Grover Cleveland is both the 22nd and 24th President. He was also the first President elected from the Democratic Party after the US Civil War. Additionally, Grover Cleveland was the first President to be married while in office (Krull).
During his time as president, Bill Clinton helped pass a variety of legislation that greatly impacted the country in several ways including creating a budget surplus and signing an act that encouraged much stricter sentencing for criminals. Two pieces of legislation that highlight positive and negative aspects of Clintons presidency are the 1993 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act and the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The former, the first budget passed by the president, increased taxes for high earners and created “an earned income tax credit for incomes under $30,000”(UC Berkeley). This helped to create budget surpluses for much of the 1990’s. The latter, one of the more controversial bills passed by Clinton, contained many provisions that served as harsh punishment for the crimes rather than rehabilitation (Lussenhop). This act impacted the already high incarceration rate and did not address at-risk communities where economic resources were badly needed. Both of these acts impacted the public in different ways, the budget aided low income families with its income tax credit while the violent crime act added to the budding mass incarceration problem in the United States and failed to address the problems in low income communities(Lussenhop). As president, Bill Clinton served as a good representative who supported the virtue of fair-mindedness. Even though some of his actions were not in accordance with the virtue, such as the Violent Crime Control
Theodore Roosevelt was one of our greatest presidents. He created the FDA and improved the position of the presidency greatly. Before Theodore came to be president, the position of presidency was slow and wasn’t very interesting so he made the executive branch more powerful by starting new reforms and a strong foreign policy. The life of a president is hard. It is full of stress, responsibilities, and a strong dedication the welfare of your country. Theodore had to deal with all of these presidential stresses, taking up much of his time. Do you know, though, that despite being a president, he led a life of excitement and freedom that many other presidents had never before experienced? Theodore, “Teddy” as his first wife Alice called him,
George H.W. Bush wasn't just a man, myth, legend, or the 41st President of the United States. He was a contributing factor to the entire nation. Without George H.W. Bush, there would never have been the Disabilities Act, Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, or the reauthorization of the Clean Air Act. Bush’s conservative nature allowed the United States to avoid chaos, which helped create a peaceful nation. With all of his positions in Congress, years as a Vice President, experience as a military aviator, owning a big-time oil production business, and more, Bush’s contributions will
President Franklin D. Roosevelt and President William Clinton had similar and contrasting viewpoints on domestic policy. Both presidents took office which there was an economic struggle and unemployment was low. Also, the unemployment rate was declining, business’s were going bankrupt and an international crisis they had to deal with to maintain free trade. President Roosevelt had the more severe circumstances with the Great Depression that occurred because of the Stock Market crash in 1929, and fighting a two front in World War II. When President Roosevelt took office, the unemployment rate was 25 %, which is historically the worst depression in history.
Clinton impressed people with the idea of a family man in office. He was focused and charismatic. Better economy was what the American people wanted so that is what his goal was. During his reign he went through more scandals and controversies than any other president. He was impeached, yet despite all, he was loved by America. Our economy prospered and we had better diplomatic relations. The American people wanted change for the better and so they elected William Jefferson Clinton for their forty-second president of the United States of America.
Anyways President Bill Clinton did many great changes to the U.S as well as devastating ones .He made the economy better by adding more jobs and also made it safer by adding more police officer to our streets .But He also did not so great things like locking too many people in jail , escalated american war drugs these things impacted the US . John F. Kennedy also did great changes to the U.S like signing executive orders prohibiting
The movie did hold my interest. I was interested in how the economy operated from the beginning after being founded in the 18th century. I liked how the movie depicted the nations debt. This movie was sort of like a chapter in a history book to me. It showed how the United States economically prospered and did not so well over the years. I never really thought of this nation having a significant amount of debt in the beginning. What I realized after watching the movie was that we need to elect more officials that are more concerned about the national budget and proposing solutions to fix it. This video made me see the government as an empire and how these different branches control the government. It also made me realize that the government is not as good as
