Particular emphasis will be on domestic and foreign policy, and effectiveness of their presidential administration. Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times as President of the United States of American between 1933 through 1945. William Clinton was elected twice as President of the United States of American between 1993 through 2001. “Presidents may be active or passive in terms of the effort invested in their jobs; they also may be positive or negative about their positions (Maltese, 164). In regards with President Bill Clinton and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, James Barber identifies them as an “Active-positive”. Active-positives display personal growth and stability, which they take pleasure in their job and the challenges they face with power productivity to pursue their objectives. Also, they pragmatic political figures that possess flexibility in their pursuit of achieving their goals and are willing to alter or abolishing their goals rather than experience severe consequences (Maltese, 164). President Franklin D. Roosevelt and President William Clinton had similar and contrasting viewpoints on domestic policy. Both presidents took office which there was an economic struggle and unemployment was low. Also, the unemployment rate was declining, business’s were going bankrupt and an international crisis they had to deal with to maintain free trade. President Roosevelt had the more severe circumstances with the Great Depression that occurred because of the Stock Market crash in 1929, and fighting a two front in World War II. When President Roosevelt took office, the unemployment rate was 25 %, which is historically the worst depression in history.
One of the most severe worldwide economic downturns in history is known as the great depression. Numerous amount of issues and problems were taken place between the years of 1929-1939. The great depression brought a rapid rise in unemployment, bank failure, and much more. Despite the wide range of issues, Franklin D Roosevelt was actually concerned about the depression. Roosevelt's response to the great depression was very effective because he had launched the new deal, due to the uprising problems and issues of the great depression.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the thirty-second president of the United States, was a central figure for the United States in the 20th Century. While leading his country out of The Great Depression, he also led the nation through World War II. Herbert Hoover, the thirty-first President, led the country during the Great Depression and his policies enforced at that time eventually led to his downfall because of their inability to end the downward economic spiral. Both of these Presidents greatly contributed to the nation by using different policies and tactics that classified them as either liberal or conservative. Although there are some exceptions because of the acts passed by Hoover, the characterizations of President D.
As incoming Presidents, Roosevelt and Obama were handed down several of the same issues. Both Presidents acquired economic problems. Roosevelt inherited the Great Depression, while Obama inherited the Great Recession. In comparison, the Great Depression that Roosevelt inherited was more severe then the financial issues that Obama had coming into office. Not only did the Great Depression last longer than the Great Recession, but unemployment and poverty was at an all time high point. “By 1932, one of every four Americans was unemployed; in many large cities, nearly half of the adults were out of work” (Shi and Tindall p. 913). Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes or farms and a large numbers of banks failed (Shi and Tindall p.913).
The former presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover had similar views on how the government should be, that differed from Franklin D. Roosevelt. How the presidents decided to manage the economy with their power, shows how they thought the government should be ran. President Coolidge and President Hoover had many ineffective ideas throughout their presidency, while President Roosevelt managed to change the economy. Calvin Coolidge was a republican president that believed that the government should stay away from controlling the people. He was known for not doing much to better our country; he thought it would happen naturally, so he didn’t feel the need to pressure the congress into passing legislation, and didn’t create any plans of action to benefit our country.
Throughout all of history there have been many presidents. In this paper I will be explaining
The Great Depression had detrimental effects on American capitalism. The sudden crash of the stock market failed to allow Americans to achieve economic success. However, Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed new ideas to help the American economy find stability with his “New Deal”. Roosevelt’s presidency impacts the lives of American citizens today. President Roosevelt’s Administration was effective because it brought upon social change, decreased the unemployment rate, and altered the government's responsibility to ensure the welfare of their citizens.
Calvin Coolidge ascended to the presidency after a decade of war, national hysteria, recession, and scandal in the years 1923-1929. The next five years are characterized by peace, national calm, unprecedented, and inflation-free prosperity. With a successful presidency like Coolidge’s, history should had viewed him kindly. Unfortunately, Coolidge was not showered with admiration and gratitude by political scientist and historians.
America elected Roosevelt because they believed that he could be the one to get America out of the Great Depression with his plan“The New Deal,” which was passed in his first 100 days. President Nixon was elected because he gave hope to people in saying he was going to end the Vietnam war “Peace with honor,” end all the protests that have been happening “bring us together again,” and help the middle class. Nixon and Roosevelt caught the eyes of America. Franklin D. Roosevelt was a successful president. He served 12 years in office and combated The Great Depression by providing financial aid, establishing the law “Emergency Banking Relief Act”, and having America participate in World War 2. This got us out of the Great depression. In result, majority of America supported Franklin because he was politically effective and helped America get back on its feet. Furthermore Franklin was successful with legislative and from that it granted him the ability to pass laws with ease. On the other hand, Richard Nixon, The American people, desperate to find a way out of the Vietnam quagmire, were apparently ready to give Nixon his chance to get America out of that war,
With the end of World War Two and the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt, the United States emerged on the global stage as one of the planet's great economic and military powers. It is safe to say that with America's change in status, and in conjunction with profound industrial and technological change, that presidential leadership would necessarily have to transform yet again to meet a new era; nowhere could two different styles of leadership to meet the age be seen than in the Cold War administrations of Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. Both men would exhibit a unique style of leadership suited to the personality of each, and each style could be considered to characterize the administration of each president, but nevertheless, both men would also use very similar leadership styles when necessary in order to attain certain policy goals.
The modern presidency has in a sense become a double-edged sword in that presidents have become beneficiaries of anything positive that can be attributed to government, but also can be blamed for anything bad occurring in society. Quite simply, the modern president has become the center of our political system (The Modern Presidency, 2004). The men who have dealt with this double-edged sword known as the modern presidency have often walked a very fine line between effectiveness and ineffectiveness, but all have attempted to use their power in one way or another.
As the 42nd president of the United States, Bill Clinton was in the position between 1993 and 2001. During his tenure as the president, Bill Clinton had economic policies implemented, that have been commonly referred to as clintonomics. These economic policies include the monetary policy, the regulatory policy, the macroeconomic policies and the fiscal policy (Godwin, 2009). However, his contribution to the economic policies of the United States has been viewed with mixed feelings with some people contending that he contributed greatly to the economic augmentation of the US. In addition, others have criticized his contribution to the economic escalation of the country.
Americans have become used to politicians who will not go against their party’s line. Instead of having numerous free thinking elected officials who come together to ensure the welfare of society, we have two parties that control almost everything. This was not how Theodore Roosevelt led our country. He was a visionary and ethical leader. This paper explains why by describing Theodore Roosevelt’s use of visionary leadership to protect America’s natural resources by being an emotionally flexible leader and using his inspirational motivation. Theodore Roosevelt was an Ethical Leader because he put service before self by resigning from the position of Assistant Secretary of the Navy to fight in the Spanish American War and was a free thinker who went against his party to protect the welfare of society. Theodore Roosevelt has personal relevance in my development as a leader by modeling service before self and allowing me to see how I can improve my inspirational motivation. In order to understand Theodore Roosevelt as a leader, you should first know the impact of his visionary leadership.
The man shows an orientation toward productiveness as a value and an ability to use his styles flexibly and adaptively. (12)” These types of presidents are in sync with their actions and are not influenced by underlying issues. They desire to attain results during their presidency with no further ambition to hold onto power. Presidents such as F. Roosevelt, Truman, and Kennedy fit this type of personality. The second personality, active-negative, consists of “relatively intense effort and relatively low emotion reward for that effort.
The course of a presidency is shaped by decisions made before inauguration day. The choices a president-elect makes when staffing their White House determines how they will use the precious time they will spend in the Oval Office. The management style of a president is a function of the president’s personality with consequences for the future of the country. George W. Bush and Barack Obama are different men who constructed for themselves distinctly different White Houses, each with their own priorities, strengths, and weaknesses.
There are four types of presidential character: active-positive, active-negative, passive-positive, and passive-negative. Active-positive is adaptive. They are self-confident and flexible. They emphasize the “rational mastery” of his environment, and they use power as a means to achieve beneficial results. Active-negative is compulsive. Power is a mean to self-realization. He has low self-esteem and is highly driven. Passive-positive is compliant. They seek to be loved and are easily manipulated. They are superficially optimistic. Passive-negative is withdrawn. They respond with a sense of duty and avoid power. They avoid conflict and uncertainty. They also emphasize principles and
