How Did The Holocaust Affect Our Lives

Hitler died on April 30th of 1945. Before he took his own life he helped take the lives of millions and ruined the lives of others. The holocaust was a genocide of millions of people, including people who were Jewish, homosexual, and more. The holocaust substantially affected the lives of countless people by destroying their family lives, making them unwelcome in their homes, and causing trauma in various ways.
The holocaust separated and destroyed hundreds of thousands of families. One girl, Alice Melcer, went into hiding at the age of 5. She was reunited with her mother after a long separation, but their relationship was not the same. Once Alice saw her mother again, she had no hair, was dressed in rags, and was extremely thin. (Fitzgerald) The separation of this family was a result of the holocaust and the result made the two feel like strangers causing their relationship to be destroyed. This family happened to survive everything they were put through, but their family has already torn apart from the torture from the holocaust that changed her mother. There are others who were unable to ever be reunited with their family because death had reached them in the camps, just like Moana Hilfman and Thomas Buergenthal. Moana Hilfman was 4 years old when she went into hiding to avoid camps, and would never get the chance to reunite with her family. Thomas Buergenthal had survived the camps and tried to search for his family when the thought finally occurred to him that maybe his parents hadn’t survived and he would never be with his family again. (Fitzgerald) Thousands of parents lost their children, and children were also left parentless. Their lives completely changed for the worse and some of the most important people in their lives were gone.
