The Allied forces invasion of Hitler’s “Fortress Europe” began in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944 when the American and British paratroops dropped behind the intended invasion beaches to disrupt German communications. World War II was fought between two groups the Axis powers which were Germany, Italy and Japan. On the other side where the Allies which include Britain, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Soviet union, China and the United States. The reason World War II happened because politically unstable Germany, Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist (Nazi Party) rearmed the nation and signed strategic treaties with Italy and Japan to further his ambitions of world domination. It was estimated that the total deaths ranged from 50 million to 80 million. The country with the biggest death toll was the USSR with and estimated number of 24 million and at the time that was about 17% or the country’s population. Operation Neptune placed all naval issues under the command of Admiral Bertram Ramsey whose command skill had already been seen in 1940 with the part he played in the evacuation of troops from Dunkirk which had a huge roll in World War II.
