How Is Love Presented In The Great Gatsby

The lifestyles for women in the early 1900’s were very different from the ones today. In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, the protagonist, Janie, goes through a series of challenges to find love. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the characters encounter many confrontations with love. Both books have similar themes that offer the ideas of love in the way that they were shown in the early 1900’s.

In The Great Gatsby, the narrator represents love by explaining the love triangles involved in the characters lives. The text states, “There are all kinds of love in this world, but never the same love twice.” The love triangles in The Great Gatsby have caused many issues in the storyline of the novel. The characters, Daisy and Gatsby, have had issues in their relationships that led to more major issues as the story went on. When Gatsby and Daisy were growing up, they were a duo in love. When Gatsby was old enough he went off to war leaving Daisy back home alone. Gatsby’s love for Daisy grew fonder while he was away at war. Daisy’s love for Gatsby slowly diminished. The characters in both books faced many oppositions with all the relationships that were present. The love relationships for Janie in Hurston’s, Their Eyes Were Watching God, started off to not be all she dreamed about. Janie then never gave up and got out of situations she was in and finally found true love by the end of the novel. The love between Daisy and Gatsby in Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, was true love in the beginning for the two lovers but shifted after Gatsby left.
