In today’s society, technology has increasingly become more present in our lives. Grow-ing up, what I remember most was whenever I was a home, the one place anybody could be sure to find me was in my bedroom, sitting behind my Sony laptop doing random things. For many people, including myself, who grew up around computers and technology, it is really hard to imagine living in a world without them by our sides since we are so used to having them around. So where did computers and laptop even come from?
The first computer idea came from an English mathematician named Charles Babbage, in 1822, who intended to come up with a solution to change and make a manual time-table organization machine that could calculate various problems efficiently for the government. He came up with an idea of two different products: one which would produce efficient time-tables, calculate basic math equations, and be able to print out the results; and another one which would be able to calculate any specific equation that was programed it to solved. Though the engines he created were both unsuccessful, it did spark a flame towards creating computers in the future (Campbell-Kelly, Martin).
In the early 1940s, two professors from the University of Pennsylvania, John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, released the first functional computer called the ENIAC. It “occupied about 1,800 square feet and used about 18,000 vacuum tubes, weighing about almost 50 tons” (When Was the First Computer Invented).
In 1937, J.V. Atanasoff, a professor of physics and mathematics at Iowa State University, attempts to build the first computer without gears, cams, belts, and shafts. Then, in 1941 Atanasoff and his graduate student, Clifford berry, design a computer that can solve 29 equations simultaneously. This is the first computer that can store information on its main memory.
Technology is defined as machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge. Its original use was meant solely for the service of humans, however overtime it has evolved into something much different. What was originally meant to be an assisting piece of machinery has changed almost every aspect of our culture. The way we think, communicate, lie, and even love has been impacted by the use of technology, and all of this is has made for interesting pieces of literature. In pieces such as Her and I, Robot, we see the evolution of robots and artificial intelligence into a more empathetic and humanlike creatures. This gradual change in our views of robots overtime speaks volumes to the evolution of technology. Technology in literature has become a reflection of human beings themselves, mirroring the very qualities of ourselves that make us human. By looking at the personality that technology takes on in literature, we can greater understand the aspects of ourselves that truly make us human.
The origin of the computer resides with the military. The computer itself was created by the military during the Cold War era, when we were in a technological race with Russia. This race was the fuel for massive advancements in technology especially in the sector of computer intelligence. The first Computer’s were physically large enough to fill an entire room. They were used to manage large quantities of data in textual and numerical form. The government backed certain research facilities in the advancement of the computer and some investigated and experimented in computer technology with art and music. 1

Although the idea of the computer had developed, the first digital computer, the Colossus, was used in World War II in England to crack into Hitler’s codes to break an electronic code to discover the German’s war plans in 1944. This would eventually evolve into technology that would become the Personal Computers (PC) and begin the age of the Computer and online connection (The Colossus Gallery).

In the early 1980’s computers were unknown. The only real computers were called mainframe computers and they took up an entire room in size. They used a special code called binary that only worked with 1’s and O’s. All of the data had to be inputted by stretches of tape or by flipping switches. It took people to develop a computer language for the computer to take off. The first language was called Cobal and it was followed by Fortran and Basic. Every since I was a child, computers fascinated me. I wondered how a computer can display pictures and words very quickly onto the screen. Who invented the computer and how can all of the websites and applications work? It amazes me how many programmers program applications in order for the world population to use on a daily basis.
1983 www or internet was invented by Robert E. Kanh and Vint Cerf, It is basically a global system of interconnected computer networks which all use the standard Internet Protocol Suite. It connects billions of people all around the world and that is why its one of the most important inventions.

Through a series of trial and error, computers were transformed from small sprockets and motors to machines that could unravel most of society’s problems. In 1946, Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, two military commissioned American inventors, constructed one of the world’s first computers using vacuums and enormous air conditioners. The two men started an industry in machine processing speed and power. Eckert and Mauchly’s invention defined all new aspects of the future. By the 1950s computers were a public attraction; they were being used for military purposes, business management, and the advancement of networking.

Computer science is, in comparison to most sciences, a relatively new field starting as early as the 1930’s for military based projects and eventually adapting in the early 1980’s to the personal computers we have today.
