1. Explain how the essays you are submitting meet the Criteria for Writing Proficiency stated below. Be sure to include specific examples from your own essays to support your claims.
I believe the essays I have submitted meet the criteria for Writing Proficiency for numerous reasons. I will elaborate on these over the pages to follow.
To begin, my essays are suited to the purpose and audience for each essay. This is perhaps most directly reflected in the introductions to my various essays, where I often establish in step by step manner the main topic I will be covering, as well as the method I will follow in presenting it to the reader. But I make a consistent attempt to deliver my ideas to an audience that corresponds, not only to the complexity of the topic but also the audience to whom I am writing. For instance, in writing about entrepreneurship, which is a comparatively simple topic next to my essay on the theme of living rationally (presented by various philosophers of the western intellectual tradition), the structure of my paper, down to the level of sentence structure and order of paragraphs, corresponds to the simplicity of the topic. Likewise, the way I deliver my ideas through the written word varies with my audience. So for instance, where I am speaking to business students in the former, I adopt a simpler and more direct approach to the topic of entrepreneurship. The topic is not heavily nuanced. The purpose of the essay is not to make it heavily
If we are to establish that good writing is made up of basic control of the language that is being written, adherence to conventions of grammar and style, and the ability to present a cogent argument and reasonable support for that argument, I may qualify as a good writer. However, it must be recognized that there is a great deal of distance from simply being good at a subject or task and having developed mastery of the same. Thus, I would argue that while I am a good writer I have yet to cross the threshold of skill that qualifies me as a great writer. Greatness in writing exhibits a level of awareness and development of thought that is rare and hard to achieve. As a product of this class, I would like to find myself closer to that finely
I thoroughly enjoy writing so I feel confident in my writing ability. One of my high school teachers had told me that I am a gifted writer and my writing has a lot of voice in it. The only things I have found that I struggle with when it comes to writing is grammar and transitions between paragraphs. My reading ability is just as strong as my writing ability, although I do not enjoy reading nearly as much as I enjoy writing.
In order to have an interesting essay it is important to grab the attention of the audience. This semester I learned that audiences determine lots of parts an essay has. Mainly, rhetorical strategies are the easiest ways to grab the attention of audiences. Pathos, ethos, and logos are all strategies that appeal to different groups of people and different kinds of subjects. For example, in my essay Image Analysis of EKBURG.RU’s Advertisement “Think of Both Sides” I target my audience with appeals. Pathos is my main appeal. I hope to analyze the image, but also help the audience understand the deep meaning in this advertisement. I use a picture and facts to appeal to the emotions of the audience and grab their attention. My audience is targeted to people driving over the holiday and anyone with a child because that is the main focus of the analyzed ad. I also wrote in a very serious manner because this is a serious subject. Clearly, this audience is of an older age to understand the meaning of my essay. Throughout my essays this semester I stick to a purpose and have always learned to direct my attention back to that purpose. In order to write with a purpose my purpose must be clear and explained throughout my essay. One way I make sure my purpose is clear is through a thesis sentence. I have learned how to properly create a thesis sentence through this course and to explain my thesis through steps in each paragraph, then sum it up at the end with a conclusion. For example, in
The Abrahamic Covenant was established in Genesis 12:2-3, this is the first time God spoke to Abraham and instituted this unconditional covenant. The importance is magnified for now we can understand the purpose that God has intended for Israel. The covenant required nothing of Abraham for God’s promise to give him land, descendants and above all nations would be blessed through him per Genesis 15:18-21.
Before now, I use to write essays without taking into consideration the elements and rudiments that make an essay holistic and complete. I have always picked up a pen and paper and write without considering who will read my write-up and the structural development of my essay. Essay for me has always been nothing but pouring out my ideas on paper and ink. Until now, vagueness and ambiguity have been the major characteristic in my academic writings because I never thought the need for fluidity and coherency of my sentences. As such, I discovered that in some of my past write-ups, ideas are presented in choppy, ambiguous and frivolous manner which is one of the major reasons for my
During this semester in English 107, I have progressed more as a writer. Before I went to University of Arizona, my writing was rigid. I wrote five-paragraph TOEFL style essay all the time in my high school life. After I attended in English 107, I was not confident about my writing skill. Throughout these three projects we have done, I become more and more confident about my writing skill than before. The Student Learning Outcomes also helped me to grow as a writer a lot. In these goals, I did well on several of them, but I still need to work on the other goals.
Let's be honest, I'm not the best writer. I have had to write paper after paper for about 12 weeks. Writing isn’t my strong suit and I don't think it will ever be a strong suit of mine. During the 12 weeks of composition class, I have seen improvement in my writing. Many people don’t like writing but writing skills are needed in life. I'm a junior in high school and if I want to get scholarships for college, I'm going to need to write essays. Whether I become a plumber or a CEO I need writing skills.
Throughout the school year of 2015-2016 at the Founders Academy, I have wrote numerous essays, with generally positive results. Several of the essays exceeded expectations, while others reached expectations to a modest extent, but all of the essays were supported by the writing skills that I had learned that year, regardless of my strengths or weaknesses with these skills. These techniques vary extensively, from comparing and contrasting ideas in a text to editing and revising essays for quality results, which is proven in my writing portfolio.
I consider myself relatively adequate in terms of my writing skills. In highschool I spent a majority of my freshman year reading classics and analyzing the themes and motifs in said novels. My main issue was development because I felt that most statements or inferences could be made in terse arguments. By sophomore year I found my struggle to be the absolute opposite with issues in condensing my writing pieces. While I did spend a majority of my highschool experience dealing with various writing difficulties, I was able to overcome them and they left me prepared for a challenge.
My writing strengths include grammar and mechanics and thought out introductions. In my writings, I proofread and edit and revise without fail before turning in an essay. Doing this results in the fixing of grammatical and mechanical errors.
I personally enjoy writing. I always have and I, likely, always will. However, I severely struggle under certain writing conditions and prompts. For example, I found the investigation essay extremely difficult. I was largely unable to grasp how to investigate the truth behind cat erections. While I did receive an average grade of an 88%, I felt that my investigation essay was one of the worst papers I have ever wrote. In fact, I was worried I would receive a horrible grade on that essay.
Though my experiences with writing have not been as great throughout the years, I am beginning to improve. I still have notable weaknesses, but then again everyone does. With that being said, I am looking forward to improving my strengths and weaknesses in writing this semester.
From personal experience, I used to be an average writer in high school but during my senior when I took college English, the quality of my writing increased because of more strict guidelines and expectations which in return gave me the ability to improve and learn from mistakes. As matter of fact, if my teacher didn’t point the mistakes out and made me redo it, I wouldn’t have improved and had better quality writing experience or somewhat college-level writing. As can be seen, some individuals might not have quality writing skills as they were not exposed to the level of writing they need to obtain before coming to college which makes them lower than average. In essence,, this could because of many factors such as institutional or family
1.) The description of my writing process is quite standard here and there, in terms of a mental outline, preparing a draft, seeking opinions, revising, and then lastly rewriting my piece of work. To add on, the writing strengths I possess are as follows: transitional words/ and or phrases, an adequate range of vocabulary, organization, and getting my point across through analogies. On the other hand, the weaknesses I struggle with is my being concise, elaborate in certain circumstances such as writing conclusions for example, finding satisfactory ways to be explanatory, and answering inquiry prompts, fully. By the end of the semester, I hope to amplify my skills not only when I write, but also when I communicate. Along with picking up beneficial tactics to write articulate pieces of work. In addition to
Writing is not just as simple as putting words down on a document or a piece of paper, it is a process. Within this intricate process are steps that involve more than just writing, such as critical thinking, planning, and editing. Using these steps has not only helped me when planning an essay but also when composing one. Throughout this course, I have managed to improve many skills and gain a lot of strengths, but I still possess some weaknesses. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.
