Introduction
The internet is a constantly expanding network of knowledge that has changed the way we see the world in a very short period of time. The first prototype of the internet came into being in the late 1960s, and the World Wide Web did not exist until 1990. (History.com 2013) In less than sixty years, the internet has revolutionized the way that people live. So much of our daily lives involves being online, including work, school, keeping up with current news events, or a sense of community through social media. The internet has become a platform for worldwide communication and community, therefore, it only makes sense that religious communities from all around the world would be able to congregate online. Buddhism, for example, is one of the religious traditions that has embraced the internet. Not only can you find academic information about the history and traditions of Buddhism, but you can also find a sense of community, either through forums or social media. Monasteries all over the world have their own websites, and religious leaders, such as the Dalai Lama, have their own social media pages. The purpose of this paper is to show the ways that the internet has made Buddhism more accessible to the western world via online academic literature, social media, and the webpages of individual Buddhist monasteries. This is important because it highlights the knowledge, community, and practices and prayer associated with Buddhism and shows how this religion
