I was responsible for helping my 3 other group members construct a lesson plan to teach a year 8 boys class. The lesson had to include information research about the four Dominican pillars. During preparation and presentation I developed my knowledge on the four Dominican pillars and teaching a year 8 class. I believe I reached my full potential as a part of the team, although I believe the lesson we taught could have gone partially better. Improvements that could have been made were dependant on the students in the class. At the start of the lesson the year 8 students were not participating as well as what they were at the end of the lesson. Not many students were inputting to class discussion and responding to questions the group and myself asked. Nevertheless I learnt a lot of new content whilst preparing for and teaching the class. …show more content…
I personally believe talking to teacher about their views on teaching younger boys was worthwhile and rewarding. I had never seen a class from the teacher’s perspective, and this task let me do so. Part of this task was treated like work experience by myself, as I had to research how it was appropriate to teach the class according to their year level, age and gender. As I spent of a lot of time talking to teachers and asking for advice for the assignment, I have further developed my teaching skills. This has somewhat changed my opinion on becoming a teacher in the future. I found it very interesting and challenging in a good way, which I think is a
At the end of a teaching session if I have worked with a child or group of children I will ask them to tell me what they have learned during the lesson and I take the time to congratulate each of them about something positive out of the session.
Through completing this activity, I learned more than I have with any other activity I have done thus far while earning my Education Specialist degree. I had to observe a teacher and provide constructive feedback using the Framework for Teaching. This observation included a pre-conference where the teacher told me what she wanted me to pay particular attention to. It required that I observe in real-time, rather than simply using a video where I can pause frequently. I then had to analyze the data I collected during the observation, in order to determine strengths and areas for improvement that I shared during the post-conference. The teacher was a master teacher and thought the lesson went very well. She was shocked when I had some ideas for how to improve her instruction. I mentioned that students seemed fidgety, and she could incorporate more cooperative structures to get students more active in their learning. I also thought she needed cooperative roles for students when they completed their group work, that way everyone was accountable for the work.
In conclusion, I was able to express myself, relate to my peers, and make many memorable experiences. All of these things helped shape the person I am today. However, not all experiences were pleasant. During the sixth grade all state choir, a girl fell down and started having seizures. I did not know who she was; I had never met her. Nevertheless, I felt curiously concerned for her wellbeing. I will never forget that experience. After the incident, we had a closer
This standard says, “Teachers reflect on their practice and assume responsibility for their own professional development by actively seeking and participating in opportunities to learn and grow as professionals.” This means that teachers consistently seek to improve their practices and teachings by eliciting feedback from peers, more experienced educators and even the students themselves. In this lesson, I was asked to reflect on what I felt went well and what could have been improved upon. After teaching the lesson, I remember wishing that I had another class period. Therefore, I knew that I could have improved the time management of the lesson and that I could have encouraged faster transitional periods. I also asked my cooperating teacher how she felt the lesson went. She had agreed that the lesson went very well and that it was educationally valuable for her students, but that I could also improve on transitioning the students from task to task. I was lucky enough to have a student come up to me by the end of the class to ask about college and the courses that are offered at our university. He also expressed which areas of study he was most interested in. I was surprised when he thanked me for the lesson and said, “that’s the kind of stuff I want to be learning and talking about.” While I do greatly value the feedback from the teacher, I will always remember what this student said because it solidified my desire to continue doing
Last year, I joined Relay Tutor Corps not really knowing what to expect. Little did I know, it would change my life forever. Prior to attending Tulane, I had never considered teaching as a future career path. After taking a class with Dean Cross I became enthralled with public education in New Orleans. She was so passionate about education and the need to help change and fix certain components. Just a few short weeks into tutoring, I knew my vision for my future had changed. Every week I was eager to get in the classroom. With my 5th grade students, I immediately built a relationship. They learned to trust me and work with me. Together we were able to turn frustration into positive energy that went into their work. However, my 8th graders were
Even though I studied harder than I ever had before, I still did not reach the grade I thought I deserved. He told me it was because the student who shared a desk with me earned a C and it was partially my fault. This lesson taught me that life is not just about reaching personal success but helping others reach theirs too. My schools CFX’s (Companion’s of Francis Xavier) were another way I have lived out service, spirit, and intellect. During summer vacations after my sophomore and junior year, I would spend hours in the sun hammering nails or digging the foundation where a new home would be built. At the end of every grueling day, we would discuss the reasons why this certain group of people were impoverished and the systematic ways that we could fix it. These trips helped me grow as a person and realize my place in today’s society. It also made me look at larger issues in our world such as homelessness and the border issues - I worked in solidarity building homes with people that were impacted by these matters. One of my greatest moments of service and spirit came on my senior year trip. It was Easter Mass and my group was in the
The combination of my past experiences and quick thinking allowed me to become successful in my first year of instructing dance. Prior to employment, I had no formal training in instructing a dance class. My first class was filled with fifteen student who were between the ages of eight and ten. I was excited to finally teach a class, but I did not know what
My project was to tutor YMCA student at North Miami elementary. One of my many duties was help as many students that I can. I tutor student from Pre-K-5th grade during my share time in the YMCA. I started this project during my 9th grade year. My whole intension of this community project was to get it over with so I can graduate. Never did I know that I would later enjoy spending my time with the YMCA students. I grew to understand student. I gave them a voice. During my time in the YMCA I grew a stronger leadership skill. Before I started working on my project I took the time to plan it out. I told myself since the beginning that I want to volunteer in the YMCA. The first step that I took was to contact the site director. Second step I took
Due to unforeseen circumstances, my teacher fell ill and was unable to return that school year. Because of the short notice, we did not have a teacher for month span and lost precious time to learn the material. Instead of waiting for a suitable substitute, I decided to learn the material independently and benefited greatly from this. When a suitable substitute came, we had to learn the material at even faster rate than before. Seeing the other students struggle with the intensity, I decided to help them and spend extra time explaining to them the lessons. Although they did not completely appreciate my help, I surely did help them. However, I found that through helping others I was truly helping myself. The help I gave them was another way to enhance my understanding of chemistry which led to a four on the AP exam
How successful was the lesson? Did the students learn what you intended for them to learn? How do you know?
It was a quarter of a semester long project in my art class. The objective of the project was to create a replica of a building with a certain type of architecture. My group and I came down to a decision and we choose Egyptian architecture and we based the replica on the Temple of Horus. Since I was the leader for this project that meant I had to create the measurements and assign the group members and I on what to do. Not only that I was the quick thinker so if anything went wrong I came up with a solution quickly. An example is when the measurements of a side of the building did not matchup, so what I said is to just place a side that does met the measurement requirements and outline it and cut it out again. This is by far the best opportunity to show my leadership
Write a brief reflection on the activity (no more than 3 pages). What did you learn about yourself and others? What implications might this have on your own classroom practice?
During this IPPE rotation at South Park Elementary School, I believe that I did my job in helping educate the young children. The students were sitting at their desk during my service learning, I believe this helped with the delivery process because all the students were facing me. I felt that I had everyone's attention during the service learning process which helped with the delivery process. I was asked to read a book to the children during the learning experience, pausing after a few pages to ask them questions about the book helped with the learning process because the children were not expected to remember everything from the beginning of the book to the end. The teacher of the classroom also initiated a few questions to the children
In general, how successful was the lesson? Did the students learn what you intended for them to learn? How do you know?
I was one of a group of staff that had been recruited into the school to improve standards, as many of the students and staff had been underachieving. Soon after being appointed, I faced challenges from the students, staff, both teaching and non-teaching, parents and other stakeholders due to issues around motivation. Due to the turbulence taking place in the school, every individual had a choice to make. What set of values where they going to use to motivate themselves to carry out their roles? As was my practice, I put the needs of the students above my own personal needs and within a short time I was able to see the impact my work was having on the organisation. As time passed individuals caught the vision that a school is a place of collaborative learning for all, not just for students. Individual decisions had to be made. When they were given opportunities what will be their
