Simile-“Sitting back and letting it run through my fingers like so much water” (4). This quote makes me think of the main character losing control. In this quote, the water is used in a simile to represent how she feels like she's just letting her opportunities slip through her fingers and she feels like there isn't anything she can do to stop it from happening because much like water you have no way of keeping it in your hands. My favorite simile used is when Sanders described the hammer he inherited. “The head is scratched and pockmarked, like an old plowshare that has been working rocky fields.” This simile caught me off guard and didn’t make sense to me at first. This simile gives the readers a bit of detail into Sanders lifestyle and up-bringing. I think it tells me that Sanders came from the city rather than the country it might have been compared to cars or skyscrapers in the shade instead of creek

The novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is the story of Liesel Meminger, a young girl who struggles through WWII and faces the pain and suffering of abandonment. When one is faced with such an abandonment and is forced to cope on their own, they may feel lost and alone. These emotions force people to find comfort. As in Liesel 's case, some people find comfort in books and words. Liesel 's perspective on abandonment can be seen through how she coped with her childhood trauma, Max 's illness and the Himmel Street bombing.

In the book Night by Elie Wiesel it says “human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere.” This shows that the world’s problems are everyone’s problems. Everyone has their own responsibilities and when war occurs people tend to take on more responsibility than ever before. Kelly Link’s “Get in Trouble”, is a book that keeps the reader guessing in each story. She was able to add several genres in just one story. For example, “The Summer People”, had elements of mystery and fantasy combined into one, while “Secret Identity” focused more on romance and mystery genres. She made the stories seem extraordinary. While reading the stories, you will find yourself getting lost in the book. Every minute you spend reading “Get in Trouble”, you wonder what will happen next or who will appear. Link executes reality and fantasy very well in this book.

Luba Frederick, a holocaust survivor, answered “To die was easy.”, when discussing the tragic and horrible events of the holocaust. In the Nazi concentration camps, life was miserable. Jews were oppressed by Nazi’s and forced to do their dirty work. Families, jobs, dreams, were nothing more than an illusion as cruel and inhumane treatment replaced them. People felt hopeless and looked to death as an option. Many were intrigued with the idea of death, since it was easier to give up rather than choosing to continue. Majority of people stopped eating, gave up their religious faiths and hope, welcoming the darkness to embrace them. Surviving was a constant struggle for these people and the only way to overcome it was the acceptance of death.

Humans are born with freedom and rights. Every human being should be treated fair and equal. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel there are many instances where his use of imagery helps establish tone and purpose. For example Elie Wiesel used fire (sight) to represent just that.
