Going back to college at the age of 36 is absolutely terrifying. Twelve years ago, I began my career in Human Resources and the journey has been amazing. Whether it is giving a job, saving a job, or resolving employee conflict, I get to help people every single day. I stay inspired by the people I work with, remain fascinated by human behavior, and am truly proud of my occupation; I know I have found my calling in life. Recently, I started to feel slightly stuck. I know I am ready to take the next step; I want to be HR Manager.
A few months ago, sitting on my couch, a voice inside me told me it was time. I have the experience, but not formal education to get me to the next level in my career. I researched online programs and found what
I have had work experience in customer service jobs giving me skills, and the ability to work with different types of people in many situations. I pay close attention to detail and I am a very hard worker. I am friendly, punctual, and eager to learn new skills about early childhood development. I work well with others and have many ideas to improve the company. I am currently studying elementary education at Sierra College, and have taken courses pertaining to child and human development. I am also currently looking to obtain a CPR and first aid training certificate.
At the individual level, observant employees or managers can engage other people to uncover hidden anger or resentment. This individuals would seek an opportunity to be in conflict. Bucherri gave an example of recognizing a young man in distress and on the verge of tears. He stated that as an organizational development practitioner, it was his desire (he was energized) to engage the young man in conversation. Bucherri said that uncovering the stress in the young man’s life may have led to diffusing a potential conflict. He incentivized the young man to share by offering a listening ear with no judgement. Additionally, Bucherri’s actions echo what Runde and Flanagan espouse to be conflict competence at an organizational level. By helping the young man walk through
1. There are many attributes that I have that are much more indicative of my potential than my SAT scores. To begin, I am a dedicated student-athlete who also takes AP classes in all of my core courses. In field hockey, I was a four-year starter, First Team All-Conference for three years, Second Team All-State, and in my senior year I was voted captain by my teammates; to add, I am doing all of this while taking AP classes. This shows that even though my scores for a single standardized test were not as high as I would have liked.
My aim is to pursue a job in the quality improvement department. I realize that when I am in this position, I should ensure the institution is in compliance with the recommended quality standards of the accrediting bodies. This is a team effort that needs the participation of all the employees. Hence, I would encourage the teamwork of the staff to achieve this goal. I would provide the clear idea about the goals and the timeframe to meet it. The team activity would let the staff in the team assume the responsibility to achieve the goals with a unified spirit (Axner, 2015). A good team needs the appropriate team members. They should have a diverse background, expertise and experience so that the input of one person can supplement that of the
The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science has been called the most diverse square mile in Mississippi. Before coming to MSMS I had never seen other children my age who were Asian, Indian, or any other race except for Caucasian and Mexican. I didn't have a chance to talk to other children about their cultures or beliefs until I came to MSMS. Being at MSMS gives me the opportunity to speak to one of the most diverse student bodies in Mississippi. I am able to listen to the different languages spoken by the children here such as Vietnamese, Korean, Hindi, and Spanish. I also get the chance to join cultural clubs established by the student body. Currently, I am a member of the Asian Student Association. The ASA meets monthly to discuss
This spring, I will be completing my first year of graduate school in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico. I graduated with a B.S. Degree in Environmental Science from UNM last year and was the first in my family to earn a college degree. I transferred to UNM in the fall of 2012 and have had the opportunity to interact with many professors, which I feel helped to influence my decision for graduate school.
There are many reasons why I decided to go back to school. Upon graduating from high school in 2007 I decided to attend trade school due to my passion for cutting hair. After I obtained my certified barber license in 2009, I began my self-employed journey into entrepreneurship along with starting community college in 2011. As a few months went by I found myself incarcerated leaving my wife and 10-month son behind. Four years slowly passed and I return home with a totally different mind state of cherishing life and taking advantage of opportunities. Therefore, in April of 2015, working as a welder, I enrolled into Bethel University as a full-time online student seeking a degree in Organization Leadership. Right after incarceration I joined a
I earned a promotion as the Assistant Stage Manager shortly after joining my school’s performing arts company. Out of all the stage crew members, I was recognized for my ability to be responsible, work hard, and most importantly lead others. My duties included setting a superb example for other stage crew members and taking authority during crew sessions to finish jobs efficiently all while keeping a pleasant attitude. Being the Assistant Stage Manager required me to attend every rehearsal and make sure the performers were content. By serving as the assistant stage manager, I exhibited and improved my leadership skills over the course of two years.
During my medical education, I had the opportunity to do two separate electives in PM&R. My first elective was at Kaiser Permanente Hospital working under the supervision of Dr. Michael Jaffe; a well-known PM&R physician. While working closely with Dr. Jaffe on many different and interesting cases, I was further drawn to the field of PM&R, especially due to the complex and varied nature of human musculoskeletal diseases, and PM&R’s wide spectrum of musculoskeletal disease pathologies, which involve many patient populations spanning from the younger to the older generations. This experience was both intellectually challenging and personally fulfilling, especially being able to establish extended relationships with patients, work collaboratively with other medical providers such as physical therapists and occupational therapists, to deliver skillful and thoughtful care to a diverse patient population, to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, and to pursue the understanding of the underlying pathophysiological events of musculoskeletal diseases so as to help patients transition back to accomplishing their activities of daily living. With this comprehensive perspective in mind, the PM&R specialty has become a very fascinating, challenging and fulfilling career path. For these reasons, I decided to further my goal of pursuing a specialization in PM&R, and continued
Thank you for the kind words. As your employee did, I looked at all of my options back when I was 50. I looked into becoming a lawyer, the time for school vs the ROR on my education; I decided to take a 2 year course in becoming a certified public manager. Then I decided to a Bachelor’s Degree in Science in Business Management with a Minor in Human Resources. At 57 I will be graduating in June of 2017. I am glad to say that I am accepted at GSC for the Master’s Degree in Leadership Program
My goal is to further develop my career, and grow up to a leadership position within a leading firm that places priority on professionalism and considers their human resources as one of their main assets. I have decided to strive for the master’s program in Human Resources Management because it fits the profile of my career goals. After 7 years of experience in the field I am confident that working in human resources is what makes me feel at my fullest potential, and a life changing decision I have made for my
My future plans are to seek for a full-time position as human resource assistant. I want to take a year off school. During that year off I am going to take the GRES’s and gather all paper work and the materials for graduate school. The purpose of taking a year off is to see if I really want to seek a master’s degree in HR. After that I am going to apply to several master level programs in Texas. I am planning on moving in few months to Houston Texas, for more employments opportunities. My long-term goals are to get accepted into a master’s program in HR, while also working in a full-time position. I want to eventually, become HR manager of a company. I currently do not have any question about career development. However, I am not completely
Once the HRD's position is explained and described, the next step is recruitment procedure. Recruitment procedures can be defined as the most suitable candidates for a vacant in that position (Farnham & Stevens, 2000). In this season of my life, I find myself residing in the most opportune time to reflect on my managerial competencies, as my surrounding environment in which I now lead and manage, has taken a dramatic shift. The eight roles identified by the Competing Values Framework that are essential for effective management, do not make the smoothest transition from a multi until store manager in a retail environment, to a Director of Children’s Ministry in a religious institution. The competencies in which I excelled in Corporate America, I find are not the strengths I need to tap into to find success in my new role. Therefore, in order to achieve the vision of what comparable success is in my new role, I need to build on my competencies that display weakness in regards to the Competing Values Framework that will be the defining factor of my success or failure.
A passion to achieve expertise in Information Systems Management is the objectives to my Graduate Study. It would help hone my skills, earn proficiency and seek professional exposure. A graduate course would pave way to earning hands-on experience and acquire specialization in the desired field of study.
