The history of human services is more than 150 years of old and is closely attached to benevolent offerings and religious organizations. Human Service stretch to feeding the underprivileged, helping the sick, and assisting those less fortunate the list is vast. Human Services took a more professional role in 60’s to provide assistance for those in need. In the past the western beliefs has influenced the way things operate for the present and the future of the Human Services Field. There are different cycles of helping different needs. The cycle of helping mental illness is providing facilities to treat mental disorders. Welfare is designed to help or assist financially with TANF, Childcare SNAP, and Medicaid. The cycle of helping in juvenile and criminal justice system in most cases takes an ethical dimension. It may be recommended to the person to change their behavior towards there self or another. Is what being done enough? It’s becoming difficult to determine who needs help the reason being for this is a lack of proper information from the giver and the receiver. Collaboration between the service providers may improve the assistance if communication remain open and steady. High caseloads can determine the impact of services such as quality of the services provided. There are many groups of people with both similar and different needs, we need to remember this will only continue to grow. Chapter 3 explains the importance of ethical competence specific to the human services field. As a professional it is important to know and understand an organizations code of ethics, as it will be a reference tool in how to handle certain situations you are faced with. Human service professionals enter into the profession with a personal set of values, goals and ethical conduct but, must always remember that their actions should always reflect the values and ethics of the company they are now a part of (site). In the event of an ethical issue a professional should always refer the ethical standards to determine what action should be taken (site). Ethics are also in place to facilitate legal implications that stem from malpractice lawsuits.

This shows that social work has been around for quite a long time, helping the unfortunate and it has developed more throughout these past centuries. The profession was largely shaped by Westerns idea and events. (Chenoweth &McAuliffe, 2015, p.32). The ideas and events included could have been war, poverty and other social reforms. That is when social welfare was needed to give aid and help solve these issues. Social work largely expanded in England in the 16th during the Elizabethan poor laws and later on in America between 17 and 18th century (Dulmus & Sowers, p.6). The Department of Human Service (DHS) is a national or sub national umbrella agency that was set into place to provide public assistance in different cities and regions across America (U.S. Department of Human Services, [DHS], 2011). According to Dr. Raquel Hatter, Commissioner of Tennessee, the DHS Mission Statement is; “To improve the well-being of Tennesseans who are economically disadvantaged, vulnerable or living with disabilities through a network of financial, employment, protective and rehabilitative services” (DHS, 2011). Most of these families and individuals now are in programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, also known as welfare(National Coalition,2009), Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. These programs provide cash, health care benefits and food for these families and most individuals helping the individuals or families to get back on their feet although some will get denied for such help.

After examining the videos from this week, both women made some very valid points on key characteristics of human service professionals. I think one of the main prominent characteristics that a human service professional should exhibit is the commitment to making a change in individuals’ lives. When a human service professional is focused on making change they will do everything in their power to add to their professionalism. For example, when this is a component that they possess, they will be committed to training to help the clients better; they will make themselves flexible to broaden their abilities to helping in different areas no matter of their title (Duncan, Video). For the Bible declares, “The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped” (Proverbs 11:25, MSG).
The Human Services Organization I analyzed is New Beginnings. New Beginnings is an agency that provides sexual assault support services in Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union, and Webster counties. The clients of this organization have all been affected by sexual assault or child sexual abuse. Issues within clients are best described as acute trauma responses or chronic trauma, such as sexual difficulties or loss of trust. In order to analyze this agency as efficiently as possible, I interviewed Terri Crowe, the Advocacy Coordinator, from New Beginnings.
