Natural gas is already a critical part of America’s energy portfolio and consequently a critical part of the country’s economic growth. Not only does natural gas provide over 25 percent of electricity generation, natural gas, and other gases extracted from natural gas provide a feedstock for fertilizers, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, waste treatment, food processing, fueling industrial boilers, and much more. Hydraulic fracturing is also known as “fracking” it means technology used to get natural gas from deep underground. The process is that it injects water mixed with chemicals, sand, and other material into layers of shale, a type of rock. It cracks the shale and releases natural gas trapped there so it can be extracted.
With the discovery of new technology that allows for us to drill deeper than ever before, natural gas wells are sprouting up all over the United States. Since 2011, U.S. oil production has increased by almost 3 million barrels a day, with a total production at 8.5 million barrels in July 2014. In this paper, we will learn about this process by answering the following questions. First what is hydraulic fracturing and what is the process used for. Then we will look at the actual process of hydraulic fracturing (how it works). Next we will take a closer look at some of the chemical use during the hydraulic fracturing process. Then we discuss the possible environmental impacts if any caused by hydraulic fracturing? Finally, we will look some of the measures being developed to mitigate the possible impact to the environment from hydraulic fracturing.

Countries around the world seek energy independence as most have become reliant on fossil fuels to power their cities and means of transportation – thus their economies. We live in a world of uncertainty, and geopolitical affairs can influence the trends and prices of energy resources – of which include coal, oil, and natural gas. With countries heavily contingent on oil imports from unstable provinces of the Middle East, the gas companies of the United States began to utilize fracking to extract natural gas and oil in order to better control their own destiny, and to create a sense of energy freedom for and employ locals.
