My name is Heather Shannon and I am a student at Metropolitan State University of Denver in Colorado. I am pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development with a minor in Elementary Education, with hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher. I am very passionate about helping children learn, grow, and become the best they can be. It is very important to me that they help to better themselves and each other while they are in school and I am concerned with how students are treating each other in public schools across the nation.
Bullying is an issue that is very near and dear to my heart. I was bullied in elementary school because I was taller and weighed more than the average students in my classes. I was constantly called “fat girl” by my classmates, and was told that I couldn’t play sports with them because I was “too fat.” I told my teacher about what was going on and nothing was done.
I was also bullied in high school. When I was 16, my mother bought me a brand new car. None of my other friends had new cars, so they became envious. Girls began to write mean things on the windows of my car, put their cigarette butts out on my car, and were telling each other they were going to beat me up. One day in the middle of summer, my friend and I ran into a group of girls from school. They started making rude comments at us, but we chose to ignore them. One of the girls walked up to me and asked me, “Are you scared yet?” and punched me in my face. My friend and I walked
Issue: If you or your child have ever been a victim of bullying then you know how horrible one can feel. There are many emotions and fears associated with bullying, and no one should have to be subjected to it. Bullying can have a lasting effect not only in one’s present life but their future as well. Bullying is very prominent in schools today, and there has been an increase in school shootings, which is the extreme reaction to being bullied. Children need to consider each other’s feelings before they decide to bully or pick on each other.
Bullying is a very serious problem. About 1/10 teenagers drop out of school because of being bullied. Victims of bullies tend to become depressed and many others have even taken their own lives away. Overall bullying has really ruined and hurt many people and it needs to be recognized. The issue of bullying hasn't been exaggerated at all. Additionally, all the attention and awareness that has been spread about bullying is completely appropriate.
Bullying is defined as “verbal, physical, or psychological abuse or teasing accompanied by real or perceived imbalance of power” and is usually targets what children perceive as different (Olweus, 1993). Bullying is prevalent across the nation. It has devastating effects on students each day. Bullying is a problem for all students, regardless of race, gender or class. The National Education Association reports that 160,000 children are absent intentionally from school each day because they fear being bullied whether it is an attack or just intimidation by other students. This accounts for 15% of all school absenteeism (Hunter, 2012). Dan Olweus (1993) from the National School Safety Center tells us that bullying includes three parts: (1)
I am currently a student at Feather River College and have, so far, been thoroughly enjoying my educational experience here. However, it has come to my attention that the retention rate at our college is only 52 percent which is low compared to other community colleges in the surrounding area. Butte College, for example, has a retention rate of 70 percent with nearly nine times the annual enrollment of Feather River College. I believe that the high percentage of students who do not return to Feather River College after their first year may be due in part to the absence of many popular majors from the school’s curriculum. Psychology, for instance, is a very high demand major that most community colleges offer. In not offering popular majors such as this, Feather River College is forcing many students already enrolled to look elsewhere for their higher education, and also discouraging other prospective student from applying at all. I believe that adding a Psychology major to the curriculum, and possibly more majors in time, will boost the school’s retention rate and enrollment, increasing the school’s income through tuition and also bringing in employment opportunities.
In a study taken by the American Medical Association it was reported that over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Out of these 3.2 million they found that approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day and 1 in 10 students drop out to school to escape from repeatedly being bullied. Reading these statistics, you can almost hear them call for someone to step up against this horrid and harassing act known as bullying. However, in a room full of bystanders, not one voice has the courage to stand up and intervene when someone is being bullied. As parents, the main goal to have should be obtaining every bit of information you can on what is happening in the lives of your child and teach them how they are capable of turning things around and stepping up against bullying by becoming an upstander.
Bullying occurs at a young age and it is mostly dealt at school or on the bus. Many people hear horrific stories about students being bullied and what comes to their mind is why no one stand up for them or why no one did anything to help them. The major question is why that student did not speak up and tell an adult about the bully bothering them. The answer is simple, those who are victims of bullying are consumed by fear. When they do seek help, they are ignored and they have to face all of this on their own.
People live for one thing and that is happiness, but how can someone go through day-by-day with being bullied that’s the biggest issue we are facing in the school systems these days. The studies and evidence is proved with videos, post on social media or even being a part of it is another thing. Overall, bullying is sometimes viewed as a perspective of how kids act when they feel the need that they are neglected, jealous and are emotionally distressed in a certain situation. This problem can also arise with the top person wanting to act as the overall top dominator to show that they are better and everyone should follow their lead, but we see these days as another problem that a lot of bystanders. People are feared to tell what they have seen
Bullying is a very important and main problem in America. It can happen in communities, schools, and homes is there are older siblings. Many adults could do something about it but they are taking there time. There are also many organizations that do their best to stop it. A fact about it is that over 3.2million students are bullied each year. Did you know that 1 in 10 students dropout of school because of bullying.
I was bullied a lot in middle school. Mostly because before the first day of fifth grade before school I told my parents I was nervous and they told me there was this nice boy named Will that would-be friends with me but I didn’t really know him. On the first day of school I went around asking literally everyone if they knew him and when I finally found him he thought I was weird that I was asking around to find him and he wouldn’t talk to me.
Bullying is a subject I totally take personally. There have been many occasions in which I found myself a victim of this epidemic, because that’s exactly what it is, an epidemic, a silent war, that no one seems to understand or even want to face alone, this issue that have swept under the rug all across this nation for a very long time, for far too long. The buck stops here! While reading through my Sunday morning paper over breakfast, I happened to run across a story that really tugged at my heart strings, and this is not the first story like this I’ve read. A young woman in high school here in my town kills herself because of continual bullying initiated by someone else at school. The question that runs through my mind is, why? There are
Bullying is one of the hardest thing to work on and prevent in today’s world. In school there are about 28 percent of kids that are getting bullied. The ages are between 12-18 year old kids “(According to American society for the positive care of children). The bully’s pick on people that are smaller than them and cannot fight back. Bullying can be hard to prevent in todays would but with the right help and effective intervention and solutions that can be stopped. “Those who bully and harass stand in the way of learning and threaten the safety of our children” (preface to “What laws will best prevent cyber-crime”). The whole point in going to school is to learn not to be fighting with the other kids. Because bullying is caused by todays increased
Bullying is a major problem and needs to stop because it affects a person in so many ways. Suicide is the biggest affect due to bullying, but there is many other ways it affects someone. When a person is bullied they start becoming depressed, angry, antisocial, and
I never forget what I got bullied by classmates for three years in the middle school. The middle school where I went was small and had two classrooms; there were twenty students in each classroom. Thus, most students knew each other and were friendly. I was friendly with them when I was a freshman. However, when I became a sophomore, some classmates started bullying me every time. For example, team members always hit and shouted at me if my soccer team lost in physical education class: “We lost this game because you acted like a moron!”, and kicked me. Furthermore, some classmates stole my stuff, such as textbooks or school supplies. Thirdly, some classmates hit me since superiority complex to show they were stronger than me because I was short
Since the start of schools, bullying has become a school wide issue that has slowed down education and halted progress. Cause of bullying, fear has spread and unhealthy habits develop both
Being a victim of bullying during childhood and adolescents years can take a serious toll on your health and overall well-being. I, myself, have gone through the hardships of bullying throughout my years in school making me familiar with the long-term effects. I want people to become more aware of bullying and hope someday it can come to a stop. No matter what it involves, abuse is wrong and goes against our given rights.
