A quote by Barack Obama says, “If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you will make progress.” This quote describes a lot of what I have gone through in this semester, particularly in this class. As a student in the School of Communication at Illinois State University, I felt the pressure to do well in my first communications class. However, with the help of my teacher, support and praise of fellow students, and my own hard work, I have made several improvements since the beginning of the semester such as verbal delivery, eye contact, and interpersonal communication skills. Verbal delivery was a skill I was hoping to improve on at the beginning of the semester as I mentioned in my …show more content…
While practicing my first speech talking about Hamilton: An American Musical, I started writing in when to look up at my audience on my notecards. After a getting comfortable with that method, I began practicing outside of class of appropriate times to look up from notecards without writing it down. After my second speech, the group speech regarding School Admissions and Affirmative Action, I felt I made great eye contact with my group members. But I began to realize that when I was supposed to look at the audience members, I was looking down at my notecards a lot of the time. For my third and final speech regarding how music is beneficial in public schools, I still wrote in when to look up at my audience on my notecards and when to move around the room. However, I also made a point to look at the people that I felt comfortable with in class. I felt like I also improved on my Interpersonal communications skills. Now, I did not have this skill as something to improve on but throughout the course of the semester, I have gotten better about understanding my classmate’s perspectives. For example, during the persuasive speech days, Pauly’s speech was on the gender pay gap. However, his stance was not necessarily the same as mine. I became to feel hostile but I knew that would prevent me from listening to his side unbiasedly. With keeping an open mind, I better understood his side of the argument. Although I may not
I have been given more confidence, better public speaking skills, but most importantly I learned to
Throughout the semester there were various aspects of communication that I felt applied to me. It was not, however, until the latter half of the semester that I experienced my greatest revelation regarding my abilities as a communicator. While studying the 12th chapter in the textbook, Interplay The Process of Interpersonal Communication, I learned
I have learned how to ask better questions and to talk to my teachers when I need help or do not understand the concept well. I make sure that I have a relationship with my teachers and introduce myself at the beginning of each semester. Learning how to communicate with my teachers
Writing was never a known weakness of mine. However, I could never confidently call it a strength. Throughout the course of this semester, my writing style has evolved and I have rid my writing of many habitual mistakes. I have learned to appreciate writing much more, and enjoy the moments where my mind meets words on a paper. Creativity has always been one of my strong suits, but through this course I catered my creativity to compose a variety of essays and speeches. Likewise, public speaking is something that I did not struggle with in the past, yet the structure of the class required a video speeches which was fairly new to me. All in all, I have been able to identify and modify gaps in my composition of writing and speech as a result of this course.
Also I have improved as a self-directed Lifelong learner. A Self-directed lifelong learner demonstrates a capacity for both independent and collaborate work. They also demonstrate knowledge, respect, and appreciation for diverse cultures and finally they demonstrate time management and organization skills. In my Chicano Studies class I have learned so much about another culture and I have more respect for the Chicano culture. They as a nation have done so much and went through a lot to get to what they are now. I have learned about different painters, musicians, leaders and more. It has really been an interesting class to take this semester and I have been enjoying every single moment of it. Similarly in my Chicano studies class for my portfolio I got to learn more about myself and understand what kind of Pendeja (Stupid) am I. It was really interesting I fell under the category “Optimistic Pendeja” I had to research and read and do a lot but overall it was just a fun portfolio to do. In Chemistry I have really became organized because we are required to keep binders and my teacher checks them every month or so and you have to keep them organized and have to make sure, they are up to date if you want to get a good grade on it, and as a person I am not the most organized person but I have accelerated and grown better at it.
Within the graduate school setting, strong communication skills are vital when interacting with classmates and faculty. Perfecting communication skills in the classroom setting prepares students to communicate effectively with fellow colleagues and professionals (Fisher & Zigmond, 1996). An essential strategy to improve one’s communication skills lies in the ability to be an excellent listener. Klein (2009) asserts that effective listening involves more concentration and focus than any other form of communication. Engaging in active listening shows that the individual is truly interested in what the other party has to say. This in itself results in a mutual respect that fosters healthy communication.
I learned a lot about communication in week 1 during the instructor’s lecture. It was very valuable to me because I learned about the different styles of communicating in reference to conflict. I myself have used an avoiding style in the past so as not to offend anyone during a disagreement. I enjoyed learning about the different styles and how they relate to our daily lives. e.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really
An area that I could have improved upon in communication was the speed of the verbal delivery of the teaching session, especially at the beginning, because Quinn and Hughes (2007) advise that this can affect the ability to absorb information and cause loss of attention. The speed of delivery was very important for understanding because the teaching method used in this session was talking, as defined by Jarvis and Gibson (1997), with the majority of the flow of the conversation being from me to the student rather than it being more interactive and involving discussion or demonstration.
Have your written communication skills improved? What has been your best piece of written work so far this semester?
Introduction to Topic: While most are not partial to Musical theatre or Theatre in general, Hamilton has taken the world by storm and created fans world-wide. If not by Using Hip-hop or rap styles then by having a cast full of PoC, or People of Color which are defined by the Webster Dictionary(Source5 verbal source 6) as a person who is not white or of European heritage.
Good communication is a criterion that sets many students apart in terms of traits. This is useful when building any form of rapport between them and the lecture or tutor. A student that respectfully communicates has also come out as self-motivated and is more likely to get more help from the teacher since their problems are aired out effectively. Students that do not communicate can be misjudged and mistaken for lack of motivation and self-confidence. In addition, students who are good communicators are made, not born (Floyd, 2013).
Over this summer course I have learned a lot about communication. I learned how significant nonverbal and verbal communication is, along with listening. I never fully understood how big communication is in our daily lives. I now realize that it is a huge aspect of how we continue in our lives. This course has showed me different levels of communication.
that it is very hard for me to look at people when I am giving a speech, but it is imperative that I do so. I not only want my audience to understand what I am trying to say to them, but I want them to believe me as well. Also, when you don’t face your audience they tend to lose interest and start conversations or activities of their own. In order to gain the trust and respect of your audience, it is absolutely necessary to look them in the eye when speaking to them.
There is a significant difference between my perception of communication at the beginning of this course compared to now. Initially, I was aware communication was an important skill people needed to have, but I wasn’t fully aware of the depth of communication. I never realized there were such a variety of behaviors and characteristics that impacted the ability for people to communicate effectively. Once I started completing the self-assessments my perspective was broaden and I gained helpful insight into my own communication strengths and weaknesses. With each self-assessment I truly felt I was getting to know myself better.
