“I’ll be in the neighborhood. Okay? Where’s the neighborhood? It just means I won’t be far. Okay.” On page 95. I think Papa forgets sometimes that the boy wasn’t raised like he was. He doesn’t understand some of the things he says or does because he wasn’t there to understand it. This part of the book shows that, it also shows on how different their environment growing up is. I don't think the boy even understand half of what Papa is saying. The boy shows that he is very smart, but it is a different smart from most kids his age. He shows incredible strength at a young age seeing all things going on with the world that half of the adults now days haven’t seen. But he also isn’t very smart, book smart I mean. He probably
This passage occurs after Jeannette and Brian have no lunches for school because they ran out of food. Their dad notices and brings them food during the middle of the school day. During this passage of the book, their father seems quite sure of himself, using a line that he uses often when he feels pleased with what he has done for others. When their dad mentions this, Jeannette and Brian think of past situations where he has let them down. Brian’s low volume when answering his dad’s question reveals that even though he knows the answer to his dad’s question is different from what he would expect, he would not hurt his dad by actually saying the truthful answer to his face.
They move frequently in over eight years and finally settle down in Inglewood during the Great Depression. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Papa is arrested and brought to Fort Lincoln. He is accused of supplying oil to Japanese submarines. An unnamed investigator questions as if Papa have contact with his relatives in Japan. When being asked, Papa responde by asking the investigator, “when your mother and your father are having a fight, do you want them to kill each other? Or do you just want them to stop fighting?”
The story starts off with letters between the two, and in those letters the girl makes her love for the boy very clear” I told my papa that I loved you… I love you until the hair shivers at the thought of anything happening to you”(pg22.) from this quote you can see her deep love for the boy and her not wanted anything bad happening to him. Which by the end of the story she kind of realizes he is never going to come back, however there is a possibility that he might.” I see mountains, and behind those mountains are more mountains still… I feel like those mountains are pushing me further away from you”(pg26)The girl’s love for the boy and the shift of her realization that he might not return ties together to help the reader create an overall sense of
As time passed he was soon the age of 18, becoming a young adult, who had gone through horrific events in his life. Joining a gang as early as 11 years old, witnessing countless murders, homicides, suicides, drug overdose, and lust. Where even himself has been an inch away from going overdose. Not only that he was kicked out of numerous amount of schools, not because he wasn't smart but because he was
In his own childish way, the boy is still loyal to his father, and still sees him as a parental figure, even though he’s being activilt hurt by him, the boy seeks out his abuser for comfort.
Per the tutor's request, the mother and father ceased asking the son about his day as often. They became less protective and more carefree of their son's activities under the promise from his tutor that this was what he needed. " Mrs. Coble," the tutor said, ""I think this kid is hurting. You know? Here's a serious, sensitive kid, telling you he'd like to take on some grown-up challenges, and you're giving him the message that he can't be trusted.
Yet despite their differences, both are greatly attached to the land, which ultimately brings the whole family together and maintains their unity. Papa tries to make his children realise the importance of keeping the land within the family and that they are “born blessed”. “You ain’t never had to live on nobody’s land but your own and as long as I live and the family survives, you’ll never have to. That’s important. You may not understand now, but one day you will. Then you’ll see.” He is determined not to
The contrast between the son’s first words with his father and his later conversation emphasizes how rapidly he is growing up. At first, the son lovingly exclaims, “not the same story baba, a new one”. However, towards the end, the son’s affectionate speech turns angry, as he shouts,“are you a god, the man that screams?”
One aspect being that he wants to help others that they encounter along the way. When they had their camp set up on the beach, one day the thief came and stole all of their possessions. This further prompted the father to go on a hunt to find him with the pistol and have a want to kill him. Once they had found the thief, the father was in rage. The boy pleaded, “Papa please don’t kill the man” (256). Then the father prompted the thief to take off everything and put it in the cart. The thief begged him and told the father “Come on. Listen to the kid” (257). Later, once they father and boy had left, the boy would not stop crying. The boy pleaded to his father, “Just help him, Papa. Just help him” (259). Here was a turning point of the book because the father decided to listen to his son and returned the clothes to the road for the thief to come fetch. The father had to trust the boy and give help to others that actually needed it for once, instead of pretending to be the ‘good
She sends him away with two Hardy Boys books. This is relevant because the Hardy Boy characters are maturing and being aimed at a maturing audience. She wants him to mature during his time away from home. It may not be right away but she wants him to at least try to. To become more inquisitive when he is on his own. She wants him to learn
In the last paragraph, he says, “I couldn't bear to tell her that I had lied.” The fact that his crying was mistaken shows just how naive his aunt is to the problems cause most people would go and see why someone is crying, but she immediately blamed it on him being saved when that was far from the truth and the fact that he couldn't tell her shows just how much he didn't want to ruin that even at such a young age. After that, he Also says that he no longer believed in Jesus since he didn't help him. This last sentence shows that his innocence and faith is truly broken because before this he believed in Jesus and was even excited to be saved, but when that happened he realized that there wasn't a one.
During this scene, the friendship between the boy and papa is shown when the boy asks his papa questions about what he would do if he dies. One night while papa and the boy were camping on the road and getting ready to go to sleep the boy turned to his papa and they had a conversation about death. The boy asked his papa “‘What would you do if I died?”’ (McCarthy 11) and his papa responded ‘“If you died I would want to die too”’ (11). The boy then asked ‘“So you could be with me?”’ (11)
The transition of the boy’s opinion of his father (from exasperation at his carelessness to admiration of his free spirit) reflects a relaxation of the boy’s severity and of the story’s serious tone. Initially, the writer uses clipped phrasing during the son’s dialogue with his father – such as the blunt “I guess” (1) and the lack of the playful response “Right, doctor” (1) – to create an
Like many child, the boy just sit with his father and listen to them without thinking. As the story point out, “The boy enjoyed the talk and sometimes felt he was allowed to hear all the secrets of the world, and was only mildly frustrated by the mysteries he could not understand. (p.218)” That means, the boy feel he is an adult when he sit with his father and listen to their conversation about women and some adult jokes. As it mentions, he can’t understand everything they talked because he doesn’t interested on the topics that they talk.so he is still immaturity at that time because he doesn’t interest on that and has no idea about the meaning of the conversation. But he can understand the conversation like that is only for adult.
As the story quotes, " 'Mother, what are you doing?' he asked. 'Do not worry, my son,' she answered gently. 'I am just marking the was so you will not get lost returning to the village.' " This quote generally means that the mother and son are very close and they both share a very detailed relationship. The feelings the story bring to the characters is showing how much the characters love and care for each other. But some others characters show different emotions like the young lord, he was very mean and treated most people with no respect. An example would be when the story quotes, " 'Fools!' the lord cried angrily. 'What good is your wisdom if you cannot help me now?' ". This quote shows how the young lord did not have confidence in his wise
