For the last couple years, I have been pretty set on entering the field of law enforcement as my future career. Honestly, a big influence that revitalized my interest in the field was the recent hatred towards law enforcement that resulted from the killing of Michael Brown and several other black citizens. Those events helped me realize that some police are bad, yes, but the majority of law enforcement personnel are great people who are risking their lives to protect the people. Therefore, I want to join so that I can help in reviving the image of police as good, kind helpers of the people. Some of the careers that I am most interested in joining are: 1.) Police Officer, 2.) Police Detective, and 3.) State Trooper (C.H.P.). Police Officer is one of the few occupations that I am strongly considering. A Police Officer’s duty is to reduce crime, thus helping protect the people of your city. That is one of the main reasons I want to become a Police Officer. From all the guest speakers that previously came and spoke to our Criminal Justice class, nearly all of them said that they enjoyed that they were making a difference/protecting the area they live in. I agree with this. I believe that the fact that I would be making the people I care for and live near safer would make me feel really good. Also, the Police have been the primary target of hate these days because of the actions of a few wrong officers. Therefore, I want to go out into the community and genuinely help the people
My desire for a career in law enforcement started while pursuing my undergraduate degree at the University of Central Florida. As a freshman biology major with hopes of becoming a Radiologist, it did not take me long to realize the medical field was not for me. Peers in my classes had a passion and interest for the material that I did not possess. My grades poorly reflected the type of student I was. Realizing it was time for a change, at the end of my sophomore year I started seeking guidance. Unbeknownst to me, my disinterest in the curriculum was a major contribution to my poor performance. I completed career assessments and sat with academic counselors in several different areas of study. I was feeling more confused than ever because Criminal Justice courses often sparked my interest, but I hesitated due to the dangerous nature of police work.
My goal’s I attend to achieve in pursuing a certificate in Basic Law Enforcement are primarily to make an impact in the community. Furthermore, I enjoy the various jobs that Law Enforcement has to offer. Last reason, would be to be part of an exclusive organization that I can be proud of. My past experiences in my work history have been mostly related to customer service, problem solving, and interpersonal skills. I also have interacted with plentiful of people, on many different social levels and many diverse cultures.
People have always had some kind of enforcement of law to protect them. The police officer’s main focus is to protect the citizens they are around and serve justice to criminals that get in the way of protecting citizens. This is an interesting career choice because the people with this career have a daily duty to keep the streets safe and clean from any dangers. The topics that will be covered are the salary of detectives their main duty, the typical day they experience, years on the job that are rewarded in different ways like a new job opportunity or an increase in pay, educational requirements, and skills required.
What many do not seem to realize is that a law enforcement agency is not a job, it is a career. One must truly be dedicated and determined to work in the field because it is all about your love for what you are doing.
Finding a career in which you feel personally rewarded by helping others and knowing that you are making a difference should be one’s main goal. Officer Mares, was able to achieve this goal when he joined the LAPD as a police undercover agent back in 1996 when he was only 21 ½ years old. Nineteen years later, he is going strong, satisfactorily performing his duties as an officer and serving the community of Los Angeles. He feels rewarded, with this career and loves his schedule, and he is happy when he goes to work. He focuses on knowing that he is making a difference one person at a time. He states, “ I may not change the world, but I am making a difference one individual at a time, which in turn makes a better community for our kids to grow in.” (Mares) Back in the days, around 1960 being a police officer or becoming part of a department that served and protected the public was highly regarded. However, that is no longer the case. Now the Police Department is an affiliation you almost do not want to be involved in.
Entering the career of law enforcement is not always easy. Becoming a Police Officer means that I would become a justified employee of the police force. As a Police Officer, I would typically be responsible for placing criminals under arrest, looking for crimes and preventing them before they can happen, protecting the community and it's property and many other things. It is not an easy job at all, Police work can be stressful and dangerous because there is a constant possibility of being injured or killed every day, but it is definitely worth it in the end. Even though those were clear examples, being a Police Officer alone would just be saving someone’s life. Enforcing the law saves peoples lives, and that is exactly what I would be doing. Everything that I would do would be preventing something that could have been fatal.
Every society needs a form of protection to help it grow and become the society it wants to be. One of the essential conditions for any society is the safety of a community. If it were not for the armed forces known as police men the law might be ignored. As a person goes to college they get to dive into the rich history of a police officer, they are also helping society while they are getting good benefits, there are also a few cons that come to being a police officer, and they get skills that you can use in everyday life and after they retire.
The purpose of law enforcement is to protect the lives and property of both the community’s citizens and people who visit and work in the community. There are many different levels of law enforcement careers such as local, state and federal agencies. There are also many different occupations within the law enforcement field. One of those occupations is a police officer. (10 Things You Need to Consider Before Becoming a Police Officer, Criminology Careers.com, August 2012, Timothy Roufa, Criminology Careers Expert). To become a police officer it takes more than just wanting to carry a gun and “catch the bad guys”. The hiring process will be long. After submitting an application, each candidate must go through a written test, a physical agility test, an oral interview or two, a “background” check of nearly every aspect of his life, including driving records, drug or alcohol usage, a thorough medical and psychological exam, and a polygraph test. Then after that, each candidate must go through an exhausting physical and mental challenge known as the Police Academy. If the candidates make it through the Police Academy then they advance to on-the-job training known as Field Training, which is even more difficult than the Police Academy. After all of this training and becoming a police officer, one would have to ask themselves if the job is worth it. Police officers are put into dangerous situations daily. After all they have to deal with drunks, the mentally disabled
Of course when figuring out what career you may want to pursue it is essential to inquire information from individuals who are working in that field of interest. In my case I decided to interview a longtime friend and active police officer in my hometown community. Officer Delancy from the Stuart Police Department located in Martin County, Florida. Officer Delancy has been a patrol officer for the last over twelve years and counting. As I talked with officer Delancy one question I asked him was why did he want to become an officer of the law. His reply was “I always knew I wanted to make my community a better place to live in and becoming an officer is one way I can help to do just that.” Officer Delancy felt the need to protect and serve our
Ever since a little kid I had the dreams of becoming a Police Officer. My police career began with the Amtrak Police Department on August 30, 2001. During my years with APD I held many positions, I was an explosive patrol K-9 handler, a criminal Investigator, and I am currently Sergeant in the Training Unit. I have completed training for and am a Field Training officer, Peer Support officer and Community Relations officer. I have received many Officer of the month awards and in 2012 was awarded Officer of the Year. I have assisted in the creation and am a Chairman of the Mid-Atlantic North Safety Committee and the National Safety Committee. During my career with the Amtrak Police Department I have been awarded two lifesaving awards for
I always thought about my skill set differences between my military police experience compared to the city, county and state law enforcement agencies. After retiring from the military, I wanted to pursue another career in the criminal justice field after graduating from Miami University. Even though in this profession today, it is under tremendous amount of scrutinization from the media and communities nationwide has never deterred me from this professional goal.
Becoming a police officer is not just a choice one makes, but in actuality a life decision. Officers must make sure they follow morals as well as the code of ethics. No matter if you’re an officer that patrols the city streets night after night, or an officer patrolling school grounds or malls, you’re still important. Everyone feels a sense of comfort when they know they are safe.
Every student here at Dalton State is working toward a goal, which is to graduate and start a career in a specific job they have dreamed of doing. My goal is to graduate and start a career in law enforcement. Specifically, I hope to start a career in law enforcement with the Dalton city police department. As long as I can remember, I have always been amazed at what police officers do. I have always thought of police officers being a very special group of people who have taken an oath to serve and protect their community that they dearly love. To me, police officers are people who are willing to do a job that strides to make their community a better place for citizens, even though the job can become more dangerous than most people would expect
Ever since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to be extraordinary in some way. When I was 8 years old I told myself that I wanted to be a cop. I don’t know what it was but I liked the idea of being a hero for people. Of course, since I was 8 years old, I never knew that I could die on the job because who would be stupid enough to assault a cop and resist arrest? My dream of being a cop was over, but I certainly didn’t give up on finding something that could make me stand out. By 7th grade, I knew that I wanted to study Computer Science when I go to college. It started out with learning animation through JavaScript from Khan Academy and I knew then and there I wanted to do more cool stuff like this in the future. However, I hit a stumbling block
I would like to be enrolled in the law enforcement program as I would like to gain more knowledge about the background, applied skills, and specialized knowledge that a law enforcement occupation would acquire. This program would also allow me to gain exposure to various criminal justice careers and would benefit me and my future goals of becoming a police officer, as I see myself upholding the law. I also have the motivation and drive of keeping the people around me and my surroundings safer, while dealing with unexpected situations. The Justice Institute would allow me to achieve the greatest output of work and obtain hands on experience and awareness of the criminal justice system, showcasing what a law enforcement related field is like.
