The first child I was fortunate to meet with Autism, was the son of a previous coworker. I walked into his home and he immediately came up and independently hugged and initiated a conversation with me. I did not know it at the time but for a child with autism, that was a big deal. Working with children has always been a strong desire and passion of mine, I knew teaching was not my number one option but I was definitely not opposed to it. At the time, I thought I wanted to go into child protective services which is why I decided to pursue my degree in criminal justice. It was not until I declared a minor in Human Services that I realized what I really wanted to do, which was be in the field of helping and counseling. After graduating, I moved
To accomplish anything in life, you must set goals. These goals must be realistic and achievable. Two years ago, I was at a point in my life that I never believed I would see. I was finally at my associate’s degree graduation day. Becoming at teen mom at 17, college had never even crossed my mind. This was a moment in my life where I was able to not be your average teen mom statistic. Continuing to better my life and my daughter’s I set a new goal after graduation to achieve my bachelor’s degree. Currently, I am in my final two classes at UMUC with a scheduled graduation date of May 15.
Collegiate High School is for those who want to challenge themselves and attain college credit/associate's degree while simultaneously completing a high school diploma. Also for those who want to get a head start in their education and in life, I am one of those people.
Working with children and supporting their learning is my passion. I have always been inspired by the opportunity teaching offers each child to reach their full potential; which understandably plays a crucial part in children achieving lifelong learning.
The Human Service area that I am most interested in is Family and Child Services. After I graduate, I will be going to the nursing field so I feel that Family and Child Services is related to nursing. I instantly asked my roommate if she know anyone because she is currently going to school to become a Speech Pathologist and she works with children that have disabilities. I had the opportunity to interview Ariel Rogan, who is the Manager of Autism Behavioral Technicians, at Centria healthcare. She oversees five Autism Behavioral Technicians that conducts applied behavioral analysis therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder. She also interact with the clients from time to time. Children with autism are usually integrated with children that have typically development, which results in a high level of bullying amongst the children with this disability. I believe this organization is special because it help children with disabilities cope and improve with developments.

After struggling with the department of education and guiding my son through the right path, I decided to become a paraprofessional for children with special needs. I absolutely love my job. Being able to help other children by accommodating their needs is a true blessing. Providing children with the tools necessary so they can accomplish given goals and expectations according to their specific needs makes me feel like a successful assistance. I have learned to be patient, understandable and resourceful for both children and families in my classroom.
In article “Want to get into college? Learn to fail”(2012) Angel B. Perez is vice president and dean of admission and financial aid at pitzer college in Claremont california. He teaches in the college counseling certification program of the university of california los angeles. He argues that students applying to college are pressured by parents and educators to seem flawless on their application. The students believe the schools are looking for the perfect students. Perez says he spoke to a student in china during a trip and he asked her what she does for fun and she replied i thought i wasn’t supposed to tell you that. I feel that it wasn’t necessary to add this into his article because it should affect her chances of getting that
As an Autistic Behavior Therapist Trainee, I am constantly teaching Makena, the girl with Autism, life skills and hope that one day they will stick with her. Each day at work I interact with Makena and am able to see the progress she has made. One day in November, I arrived at work and started the therapy with Makena. To my surprise, she acknowledged me and said "Hi Ashley" without any prompting! Knowing that I was able to successfully teach Makena a new, seemingly insignificant, life skill, made me so proud of her. The feeling of successfully teaching is
Over the past few years, my experiences have enhanced the quality of my life and prepared me for my future. Each event has taught me responsibility and has brought me closer to making the commitment of potentially becoming an occupational therapist. I became interested in the field of occupational therapy when my best friend was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease back in 2010 and was sent to a rehabilitation center to see an occupational therapist. Going into this rehabilitation center with my best friend, I was unaware to what occupational therapy was and how it would benefit her in any way. As I observed the occupational therapist work with my best friend, I became fascinated with the different types of techniques there are to rehabilitate

I'd like to apply for the Cadet Further Education Award as it offers me the opportunity to continue my studies opposed to deferring it to a later date and trying to study when I am a constable. Furthering my education at an early stage within criminal justice will assist me as a future constable within the service. It will help to qualify and assist me in moving up the ranks as a useful officer. I feel I should be considered for the award as my program of study would be a major benefit to The Bermuda Police as it will provide me with insight into court, security, police and corrections operation as well as teaching me to handle the legal, social and technological challenges in the criminal justice field of which I can share with others as a way to help upgrade our policing system even further. In addition it will help me become a flexible member who will be able to cope with and assist within various placements.

My internship fits in with what I want to do because it will allow me to get a better view on exactly what I want to do when I graduate. It helps me because I am kind of torn between going straight on the field as a forensic officer or do things like child forensics, or even go to school to become a councilor. This internship fits with after graduation because I can begin working with children. Working with these students will help keep them out of the criminal justice system, something that I have always wanted to do.
Human society has developed to the point it has today due to one over-riding trait, an ability which sets us apart from all other living things – that is the desire and ability to identify and work towards solving problems. Our world today has enormous potential and faces enormous challenges, I aspire to be a part of the process of overcoming those challenges. I believe that research, learning, and creation of knowledge is at the core of the process. I have come to the conclusion that a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in Management of Organisations is my best pathway towards that. In the following paragraphs, I hope to present my case for acceptance into the program.
I am very passionate about working with kids with autism. They have such amazing personalities and I feel like people don’t see past the disability to the unique person they are. For several years I worked at a residential facility for kids on the spectrum. I was a direct care staff that worked one on one with them to work on their goals their treatment plan was focusing on. My passion to help kids with autism comes from my previous experience working with these kids and watching them grow and learn new skills. This transformation that I watched happen and helped be a part of with these kids made me want to help more kids with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are a lot of skills that need to be taught to these children. Socialization, communication, and positive behavior are just a few kids with autism need help improving. I believe that the earlier that you teach a child these skills the more successful they will be. Early intervention has had a positive outcome within many research experiments that professionals have done. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) also requires schools to teach kids with disabilities alongside typically developed kids as much as possible.
