Hamric explains, advanced practice nursing as patient centered and skillful activities provided to improve population outcomes. Hamric focuses on educational and clinical practice, criteria and competencies. The baseline criteria include graduate education, certification and patient/family focused. The education of an APN is graduate level with specialized knowledge of an advanced practice role and supervised practice. Professional certification is required for advanced practice with a focus on a certain population. The competencies include: direct clinical practice, holistic perspective, therapeutic partnerships, expert clinical performance, reflective practice, use of evidence, and diverse approaches to health (Hamric et al., 2014, p. 76).

I do agree that, the most exciting about this course was developing a professional development plan. That has taken away some of my confusion and lack of confidence about my new role. Studies have shown that feeling of frustration and inadequacy are common during the first year of an APN career. A successful transition depends on many factors such as confidence, clinical support, enthusiasm, and opportunities to acquire skills (Morgan et al., 2012). Benner’s Novice to expert model was a good guide for me to assess my weakness and strength and set my goals to become an expert practitioner. The core competencies for the nurse practitioner is more patient-centered. The advance education and core curriculum prepares the nurse practitioner to manage complex health care needs, prevent chronic illnesses, promote quality care, integrate advance technology for health care improvement, enhance critical thinking skills, collaborate with other team members to improve patient outcomes, implementation of innovative strategies for evidence base practice within the organization and evaluation of patient health care. In this analysis of professional practice I shall examine the work I have undertaken in my current work setting and also evidence the progression in my practice. Likewise, differentiating between the direct care provider roles and those that play an indirect role in the provision of care was essential. The purpose of the APN professional development plan is to apply skills and knowledge attained for individual and professional growth. The professional development plan is a strategy to ensure the promotion of excellence in APN practice as well as a continuation to strengthen advanced nursing practice throughout the career. Creation of a development plan will help you advance in a particular goal, objective, or position. There is an ever-increasing need for APNs to keep learning and keep up with the rapid changes regarding legislation affecting health care policy, quality of and access to care, and issues surrounding advanced practice nursing. Therefore, it is critical to be proactive and take personal responsibility to develop skills for your own growth and development. New skills and knowledge augment motivation in supporting activities including communication, education, research, recognition, and advocacy.
