The subject of illegal immigration seems to be a very hot-button topic for many Americans. The subject seems to lose public outcry on either side at any given moment, then suddenly cause tremendous tremors on our social conscious. The subject of illegal immigration has many sub-issues, but one of the most problematic is that illegal immigrants are a financial drain on the American economy. Ellis Island is the location where European immigrants passed through and were documented. According to June F. Tyler, “Before 1890 each state handled immigration according to its own rules. After that date the federal government assumed this responsibility. Ellis Island became the first immigration station, opening for business in 1892.”(1) …show more content…
An estimated 6.6 million of the 11.6 million unauthorized residents were from Mexico.” (1) These numbers are staggering, and common sense tells us that something is wrong with our system. The term “illegal immigrant” is now politically incorrect and the sympathizers are trying soften the image by coining the term “undocumented worker”. The term undocumented “worker” states exactly what they are here to do, work. But this is not as simple and noble as it appears. When the first wave of immigrants to the United States came via Ellis Island, they were primarily from Europe and came with skills that helped shape our nation. Some were tradesman, seamstress, architects, etc. As noted by Steve Malanga, the early immigrants that came to the United States came for different reasons “Though fleeing persecution or economic stagnation in their homelands, that era's immigrants brought important skills that fit easily into the American economy and helped supercharge the work force.” (1) Today’s massive wave of illegal immigrants simply do not possess those types of skills. Many are here to do menial jobs at below minimum wage. The immigrants that enter the United States the legal route come with strong skills that help advance our technological and medical fields. They do not become burdens on society by using government services. The illegal immigration advocates want the American public to swallow the fallacy that these fine law-breaking citizens are here

Ellis Island was 'the door to America' which was opened on January 1st, 1892. Immigrants came here from their countries to stay in ours. It was a major immigration station for the United States from 1892 to 1943. It has been part of the Statue of Liberty since 1965. Between 1880 and 1900 9 million immigrants arrived in America, which was the largest number of arrivals in a 20 year period. The immigrants mostly stayed in the New England areas, such as New York and Massachusetts. This alarmed older Americans, because they feared that the country and system would fail because of the new 'impurities' in the land. In other words the shift in nationalities. The first immigrants to come to Ellis Island were from Ireland, Germany,
Ellis Island, which was an immigration station, opened in 1892. Ellis Island was a place where Immigrants from all over Southern and Eastern Europe, Greece, Serbia and Hungary to name a few came to have a chance at getting into America. Immigrants came to Ellis Island for many different reasons such as war, drought, famine, religion, and political and economic oppression. Although coming to Ellis Island was one step closer to freedom, the immigrants still had many more obstacles to face. The immigrants had to face numerous medical inspections, and also legal inspections to make sure they were fit to come to America.
The United States has long served as a refuge for people who seek to escape hunger, poverty, torture, and the oppression of the human spirit in their own countries. However, the issue of immigration in the United States has become a political flashpoint since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The sacralization of the tragedy has served to paint all immigrants with the same fear-ladened brush, and has marginalized and stereotyped an already vulnerable population. Today, more than ever, immigrants in the United States face increasing stressors as they try to assimilate in a politically charged post 9/11 world. To be an effective social worker, immigration issues and multicultural awareness is critical. Mary and Mario, a couple who
For many years, people from all over the world have come to the United States seeking a better life for themselves, their spouse, their children and even their children's children. However, not every immigrant comes into this country legally and many of these illegal immigrants are poor, uneducated and may be carrying contagious diseases. They may arrive here via human trafficking, smuggling or other methods. There is one thing we know for sure that many of them choose to remain silence when they become victims. The three main reasons they become invisible victims are they are not aware they are victimized, they don't know the right way to ask for help and they are afraid to be fired or even deported.
Illegal immigration has caused a lot of controversy within the United States. The media has influenced our society to make us believe that illegal immigrants are horrible people. One thing that I have learned throughout life is, “Man is born free; and everywhere he is in chains (Rousseau 4).” This sums up how society dictates our lives and limits us to what the media wants to us to believe. Whether it is legal or illegal, everybody should be treated equally. Illegal immigrants might always end up with the short end of the stick, but they heavily support the US economy. They contribute by paying taxes every year. In addition, they adopt difficult low wage jobs that are not of interest to the average American.
Illegal immigration was an issue in the past and is a pressing problem in the present. The U.S. Government has been trying to find a resolution to this issue for years. The United States approved the Immigration Reform and Control Act in 1986, which allowed the American Government to punish American companies that consciously employed illegal immigrants (Nadadur 1037-1052). The United States’ Government Immigration Reform and Control Act has been unsuccessful in controlling illegal immigration. It is estimated that illegal immigration into the U.S. has a yearly interval of three hundred fifty thousand people (Rousmaniere 24-25). It is apparent that the 1986 act was not able to keep a handle on illegal immigration. Illegal immigration
Everyone deserves a chance at a better life. When we think of America, we think of a country where we can have the freedom to live on our own terms and provide for those that we love. Other countries, however, may not be so lucky. Illegal immigrants, for the most part, aren't here to do us harm or corrupt America as we know it. They desire a basic human need: the freedom of a life well lived. Coming to America means a different, better life than the one they currently have. Thousands of people who come to this country illegally are in search of a haven where they can escape their previous nightmares. They don’t have the funds or the resources to accomplish this without it being illegal. Many don’t realize that if they could be legal, they would be.
U.S. government should not grant amnesty to illegal immigrants. When the government grant amnesty to unauthorized immigrants, people who cross the U.S. border illegally would get legal status. As the population of unauthorized immigrants increased and consequences of granting amnesty were shown, questions about whether or not unauthorized immigrants should stay in the United States became controversial. Although some people argue that illegal immigrants pay taxes and work hard, they are actually harming our society politically and economically. For example, they abuse America public services such as education and health care system, create heavy burdens for US taxpayers by receiving more benefits than paying taxes, contribute to crime rates, and take jobs from legal citizens.
Every year people from all over the world, leaving their homes and moving to the United States. These people are willing to sacrifice themselves in the hope to start a new life, to find an opportunity for financial support for their families, to give a chance for their children have a better future in the safe country. Some of them immigrate in order to find freedom or relief from political and religious persecution. Each of these brave persons has a big reason to leave a Homeland, family, friends, work and all elements of a human’s life without even a possibility to come back home one day. According to recent changes in the immigration law of the U.S., not everyone, who is
America's past is made up of immigrants who have came and formed our country. However illegal immigration has now plagued our economy. What happens when you allow millions into the country, both legally and illegally? Exactly what is happening today? You have tens or hundreds of groups, made up of various nationalities, from various places. Forming themselves into isolated communities, and then trying to get the country to change for them. This paper confirms detailed information on how America is being altered by mass immigration and by uncontrolled illegal immigrants.
According to the independent Center for Immigration Studies, in January 2000 there were 7 million illegal aliens living in the United States and the center estimated that number to grow by half a million a year (Peak, 2009, pg. 245). Based on this fact, the reality is that the minority has turn into a majority and has fulfilled the melting pot. Peak explains that ever since the incident of 9/11 the country has taken precaution and other measures to challenge in protecting borders. This even was a remarkable time of history for many citizens
Should illegal immigrants be allowed to get in for free? Should they be allowed to enter while others spend years following the rules in order to gain their legal entry? In today’s society, the people of the United States are being taken advantage by the illegal immigrants. There are many examples in the news today demonstrating illegal immigrants shouldn’t be allowed to cross the border like the economic deficit, crime or the protection of our country. Illegal immigrants should not be allowed to come into the U.S. illegally and it would be completely unfair to the immigrants who put in all of the hard work.
Legal and illegal immigration have been and still is a controversial topic, especially during present-day due to the recent presidential elections. As a result of migration, immigrants face discrimination by false statements and myths, such as being stereotyped as terrorists, unintelligent, or as people who will bring America 's economy down. These myths and false statements create an illusion of immigrants depriving native-born Americans of their rights and opportunities. Since the 1840s until present day, the United States has passed many anti-immigration laws to restrain the flow of immigrants; however, some acts have allowed immigrants to migrate to the States. Both American citizens and immigrants are equal, as each party seeks the American Dream; a fuller and better life for everyone with opportunities for each according to ability or achievement (James Truslow Adams). "Immigrants take jobs and opportunity away from Americans," "Immigrants are a drain on the U.S. economy," and "Immigrants don 't want to learn English or become Americans" are myths created by native-born Americans. Many years of research and study have shown that both legal and illegal immigrants create more jobs for the American economy, thus strengthening the economy by providing more opportunities and economic stability.
Unauthorized workers are a very controversial subject as some people believe this helps our economy, while others believe that undocumented workers weaken the economy. Let’s focus on the positive side of this issue, which is unauthorized workers lower the cost of labor, which increase the net profit of the business. Obviously, more profit could be utilized to increase the progression of the business, which could help expand the business. This could be taken advantage of by CEOs or top executives wanting to make more profit in order to receive a higher compensation for their “good” work. If the corporations are caught doing this type of activity, they should expect damages to profit, brand, and reputation. Workers are aided because of the paycheck they’re receiving is two
