This scholarly article gives a detailed analysis of academic disidentification, its significance and causes in the African American community especially amongst African American males. It is highly important to understand the meaning of academic disidentification and why it is so concentrated in African American males. Academic disidentification is a psychological term that simply describes the devalued feeling of anything academia or relating to academic success; Webster defines disidentification as “to rid of identity or characteristic qualities” and we understand academic to mean anything relating to education and scholarship. Academic disidentification will generally mean to rid or disidentify with anything relating to academia, scholarship, and educational success. This article further compares academic excellence of African Americans to other races considering factors like poverty or substandard living in schools, disharmony in surroundings, and cultural differences. According to Aud, the graduation as well as the college intake rate was significantly low amongst African Americans compared to European Americans. (Aud et al., 2010) According to a research conducted by Osbourne in 1997 and 2001, African American males were most likely to disidentify than other races and disidentification generally happened over time.
