This scholarly article gives a detailed analysis of academic disidentification, its significance and causes in the African American community especially amongst African American males. It is highly important to understand the meaning of academic disidentification and why it is so concentrated in African American males. Academic disidentification is a psychological term that simply describes the devalued feeling of anything academia or relating to academic success; Webster defines disidentification as “to rid of identity or characteristic qualities” and we understand academic to mean anything relating to education and scholarship. Academic disidentification will generally mean to rid or disidentify with anything relating to academia, scholarship, and educational success. This article further compares academic excellence of African Americans to other races considering factors like poverty or substandard living in schools, disharmony in surroundings, and cultural differences. According to Aud, the graduation as well as the college intake rate was significantly low amongst African Americans compared to European Americans. (Aud et al., 2010) According to a research conducted by Osbourne in 1997 and 2001, African American males were most likely to disidentify than other races and disidentification generally happened over time. Research showed that the African American female was less likely to disidentify than their male counterparts and academic disidentification as we have
Delpit further examines the university life of students in part four of the book. She concentrates on invisibility issues and dis-identification within the universities. This is an issue faced by many black students in campuses. She connects this issue of invisibility to the racism faced in institutions in the American society that undermines blacks. A vivid example is the disastrous effort to rescue people during Hurricane Katrina. Delpit uses this connection to black university students to support the fact that, the claims of invisibility and the mundane insults subjected to minorities lead to the differences in graduation numbers between the white and the black students.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are experiencing low retention rates with first generation college students. The students are not graduating within a four to six year enrollment period, and or are not returning after their freshmen year. As the American workforce looks to colleges and universities to fulfill the workforce pipeline with educated diverse workers, HBCUs are in the spotlight to produce qualified minority graduates. Moreover, HBCU’s are looking to refine their methods of inclusion and buy-in, this will in-turn manifest a higher level of retention amongst first generation college students.
Herman Hudson was born in Biringham, Alabama in 1923 and grew up to get his bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees from the university of michigan. He had a long career at teaching at other colleges and universitys until the landed at Indiana University. During his time there he established all of the African American studies institues at the college and helped inprove race relations among the community.
The achievements for which the graduation speaker praises recent graduates from the narrator’s school differ from the narrator’ hopes for herself and her classmates in the aspect of success and achievements. The speaker praises the whites when it comes to being successful in their field of endeavor and always given the priority in many facets of life. He even gave the bragging rights for them. He made them feel the racial discrimination where whites are being favored over the blacks like them. “Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs, have played an important role in enriching the lives of not just African Americans, but our entire country.”(Keller) What Ric Keller states here is an opinion that outlines a compelling fact about HBCUs that along with several other significant information that may come as a surprise. Essentially, the great debate between the choice of whether an Historically Black College and University or Predominantly White Institution is more beneficial or not can become a pondering interrogation. Each acronym defines itself, Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCUs) were established by the means of providing an education for predominantly African American students. Whereas, Predominantly White Intuitions(PWI) serve to instruct and educated the opposite or in other words those of Caucasian descent.
Another major predicament that plays a large role in the amount of African Americans that do not receive a higher education is once they get to college, they do not have a typical or enjoyable experience once there. This paper explores historically black colleges and universities and their impact on the economy. Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are foundations of advanced education with the expectation of serving the black community. In this paper various points are stated on how important HBCUs are important to the black community and how it is a beneficial experience for all races. It also discusses the effect, if any, that they have on the economy as a whole. HBCUs have permitted African Americans to have a chance to obtain a secondary education with beneficial subjects. “Double consciousness describes the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into several parts, making it impossible to have one unified identity”(Understanding W.E.B DuBois, n.d.). This proposal was brought forth by W.E.B Bois. He believed that African American’s were struggling with these repressed feelings of not knowing who they are; they could not combine their African background with their now developed American identity. This concept was developed in 1903, but is still very relevant today; one may be able to relate the relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to this theory/ conclusion. At a Historically Black College or University, an individual has the ability to further their education. I decide to attend Virginia Union University to gain a better understanding of my history, to bond with others within the black community, and to profit from the HBCU experience.
Over the years there has been a significant decrease in the percentage of African American male success in higher education. Not only does this effect society as a whole, but more importantly this effects the African- American community as well. The high percentage of uneducated African- American males will result in increased crime rate, shortened life span and overall hard life. However this epidemic can be stopped by looking at the contributing factors of why there is a decrease in African-American male success in higher education and how to change it. The U.S. Department of Education’s Digest of Education Statistics (2010) compiles data on educational trends and statistics in the United States. According to the digest, in 2009 African Americans earned about 10 percent of all bachelor degrees awarded. Furthermore, about 20 percent of African Americans currently hold a college degree. When compared to the same rates for the white non-hispanic population, African Americans are largely lagging behind. The challenges that African Americans are facing must be met by post secondary institutions if this group is going to continue on the path of economic and career prosperity. Today's education is often viewed as failing in its goal of educating students, especially those students characterized as minorities, including African American, Hispanic, and Appalachian students (Quiroz, 1999). Among the minority groups mentioned, African American males are affected most adversely. Research has shown that when Black male students are compared to other students by gender and race they consistently rank lowest in academic achievement (Ogbu, 2003), have the worst attendance record (Voelkle, 1999), are suspended and expelled the most often (Raffaele Mendez, 2003; Staples, 1982), are most likely to drop out of school, and most often fail to graduate from high school or to earn a GED (Pinkney, 2000; Roderick, 2003).
The mission of the students around the country who fought for an education that would shed light on African Americans. The progress the students created is seen today in American Universities ,and also HBCUs, where (AAS)African American Studies is implemented into the curriculum. Before, the dissection the formation of AAS, it should be noted that without the sacrifice from others I undoubtedly would not be writing about AAS ,or reflecting on the significance it has created for generations so far.
Thesis: Even with the creation of Black Studies as an academic discipline, the culture and influence of white dependency still seem to block people of color’s mental potential, and inherently their ability to progress as a group.
In a publication titled ‘Black Women in Academe’, author Yolanda Moses describes how “isolation, invisibility, hostility, indifference, and a lack of understanding of the Black women’s experiences are all too often part of the climate Black women may face on campuses” (Moses, 1989). The detrimental environment surrounding these women frequently results in sullenness, lack of social assertiveness, and belief that they are less competent than male students. Even if time spent at an academic institution is minimal, with this kind of prejudice faced at an early age, any woman- black or otherwise, would suffer the rest of their life. In response to the discrimination faced at universities, some have created programs to aid black students and other minorities; these programs tend to generalize the needs of all its black students and do not fully support black women specifically.
