Security, maritime safety, and saving lives. These are the components of what the United States Coast Guard provides for America. The Coast Guard is one of the five armed services in the United States and was the only force on the sea until the United States Department of the Navy came along(USCG: A Multi-Mission Force). The Revenue Cutter Service, now known as the Coast Guard began in 1915 and its purpose since then is to protect the United States, the environment, and to save lives at sea. The United States Coast Guard has an immense importance on the citizens of The United States because they shield any kind of danger, is committed to keeping the environment safe and ideal, and making saving lives is a priority. With this being said, the United States Coast Guard is the chief maritime guardian of the seas because they are dedicated to helping protect the homeland, preserving the maritime environment, and addressing the variety of emergencies. First and foremost, the Coast Guard is able to delineate the portrayal of chief maritime guardian by helping protect the homeland. The United States Coast Guard is able to do this at all times because they serve under the U.S Department of Homeland Security as times of peace and complete tasks such as search and rescue, ice patrols, etc. At times of war the United States Coast Guard can be with the United States Department of the Navy under the President’s order and defend the nation against threats and terrorism.
