Importance Of Reading And Writing Skills

The significance of learning to read and write is the ability for a person to express themselves to others by communicating vocally or through writing. The communication needs to be of substance in order for it to mean anything. Reading induces the ability to learn information one did not previously know. With ability of new words and their meaning within your arsenal, gives you the ability to attack or defend your point of view. With these supporting capabilities it enables you to take and stand for what you believe and want to express.

There are many important skills that students must learn in school. One important skill would be how to read and write and the other would be how to think critically. These two skills are very important in different ways. However, they are both important skills that will help individuals throughout different times in their lives. The skill of reading and writing can open a door into a new world, a world filled with words. Critical thinking can help with having to make life changing decisions or it can help find a solution to a difficult issue. The skills reading and writing and critical thinking are all important skills in their own way, and they are both important during many aspects of life.

There is nothing that has had a bigger impact on my life than learning to read and write. I remember being in elementary school and the teacher emphasizing that reading and writing is fundamental. I didn’t know what that meant or why she kept repeating that over again. As I started to grow older I slowly understood a part of it. It began by observing my father every morning, he would buy the Spanish newspaper and would read it. One day I asked him if I could read the newspaper, I knew I couldn’t read Spanish but I was curious. I recall breaking up the words and putting them together like I learned in school. To only realize that Spanish is phonetically written. From there I learned that there is an important connection in Spanish and English that is important just as reading and writing in my life. There are many types of outcomes that I gained from learning to read and write. Such as being able to expand my knowledge, observing how communication is interacted in reading and writing, and appreciating the creativity of it.

I would say that I have the level of reading and writing skills expected from someone who graduated from an average public high school. Thus, though we have learned about the distinction between primary and secondary sources, it was not until I started taking AP courses that we truly had to synthesize something out of them. My only interactions with these outside sources were in my history classes, not my literature classes. In AP United States History, we would have to practice with what are called Document Based Questions (DBQ’s), where we would be presented with about 8 primary and secondary sources and then have to write a timed paper on an argument. Learning how to read and write was a challenging task for me as a kid. I believe I couldn’t read until the second grade and that was embarrassing. Being a slow learner made me insecure, which hindered me from building the confidence I needed to succeed and get pass identifying with having a disability. Instead, I was enrolled into a special ed class that I had to leave my regular class to attend. During my special ed class all I could think about was how I couldn’t wait to get back to my regular class so I didn’t have to tell any of my classmate where I was. Therefore, my focus unfortunately wasn’t on learning, like it should have been!

This not only benefited me as a reader, but it also provided me with a stronger relationship with my parents, as well as a great deal of my favorite childhood memories. Over time, I was able to witness my extra practice pay off. During class, I no longer fell behind my classmates and was able to generate full sentences without assistance. My teacher also took note of how much progress I had made in such a brief amount of time. Although I had improved, I decided to continue with this routine over the next few years because I had faith that my skills possessed the ability to grow even more. By the time I was in third grade, I had built up enough confidence and reached the conclusion that I wanted to enter a submission into the young authors contest. I invested a great amount effort into drafting my book, with the help and support of my family, and was proud of what I had written no matter the outcome. It turns out that my book had not only won for my class, but it was also got chosen over a girl’s who had won every year prior to this one. For many people reading and writing are the most fundamental skills a person can learn, it can also greatly influence a persons cognitive thinking capacity and the sharing of information with others. However, in some parts of the world, people still do not have access to education or the ability to learn to read and write. Lacking the skill to read and write can make things tough for some one in todays society, however with the right resources and mentors to support, one can find a hidden passion for reading and writing. For me, reading and writing has never been one of my greatest skills, I had always struggled throughout my younger years of schooling to keep an interest. As of today, reading and writing has made a great impact on my life, especially in the last few years since I began college.

Despite my unpleasant attitude towards writing, which didn't change for years, I was raised with the importance of literacy, and I realized how important it would be to improve my writing skills. I have always loved to read, and I grew up on books. My parents read to me and encouraged me to read, something that has probably made my love for reading ingrained. When I was little my folks could never read to me. Being determined to have ADHD and was placed in Special Ed class in primary school and going to Sylvan I've discovered that I read superior to at composing since I was never instructed how to be a decent essayist.

Learning to read and write in English was a very tough accomplishment that I made in first grade. It was difficult because my first language is Spanish. With the help of my parents and my teachers in school, I had the chance to learn another language. It took time, practice and effort to accomplish my goal to read and write in another language.

For as long as I can remember I have always loved reading and writing. My mother was the one who nurtured my love for the language arts. Some of my more negative experiences in school, while painful, did help me to recognize my skills as a writer. Especially given that my childhood was not exactly a normal, I found a way to express my feelings through writing.

Writing is one of the most important skills you can have in life. Being able to construct high-quality papers, among other things, is key. Not only to get a point across, but to accurately give information, or some just like to do it for fun. I write so that people can easily understand what the point is that I'm trying to get across. There are so many different forms of writing that people can utilize however they want to, whether it's for research purposes or for creative purposes. Being able to write well is a skill that can be utilized daily and can is very beneficial whether you have to write something for school, to write a resume and to type something up for a job.

No matter where we go, if we cannot read or write the language it can make things very difficult. Since the very day that we were all born, it was instilled upon us to learn to read and write our native tongue. If we do not have the skills necessary to do this, how will we ever learn and grow? Learning to read and write is a life-long pursuit in which the goal can never completely be achieved.

Reading and writing are two of the most important tools in my life, because without them I would not have an education. They form the basis of a class; for example, completing a lab in chemistry would not be possible without following a written lab procedure. These two skills are taught at such a young age, and as education advances students must continue to strive to reach a higher level. I can remember in elementary school, we were always pushed to reach the next reading level once we had successfully mastered the one we were on. It was always a competition for my sister and I to be at a higher level, I usually won. Even though I was excelling in reading it was the complete opposite for writing. Reading and writing are both important; you can’t have one without the other. They are skills that are increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write today, will somehow affect your future job, family, position, or even your salary.
