Internships, Volunteering, and Certifications
I have conducted some research that pertains to facilities management in healthcare. The majority of the research was conducted locally within the state of Colorado. This research gave some insight into different variations of volunteering and internship opportunities as well as professional certifications.
Internships and Volunteering
In Colorado I was unable to find internships that related directly to facilities management. I was however able to find a few programs from local hospitals that offer internships in facility maintenance that offer to pay for two years of community college during the internship. At the end of the internship the hospital will offer to hire candidates, which is a great start on the path to becoming a facility manager. The second internship I found was at the Children hospital in Denver. The hospital offers volunteering and internships opportunities in many different fields. On a National scale I was able to find many different intern and volunteering opportunities that directly related to facilities management in healthcare.
Most of the opportunities required individuals be involved in healthcare in some degree or be enrolled in college classes with a degree program related to healthcare. Most of

I decided to look on Linkedin at facility managers and directors to see what certifications were popular. One of the most popular certifications was the Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) from the American Society for Healthcare Engineers (ASHE). This certification was needed in most of the available job opportunities for facility managers. This certification is a part of the American Hospital Association which is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and
In order to be a volunteer, one must first realize that volunteering is a serious matter. The
For my internship, I served under the Allegheny County Health Department in Pittsburgh, PA. I served as the National Health Corps Member for the Women, Infants, and Children Program as their Care Coordinator for all nine offices. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a supplemental nutrition agency that targets pregnant and postpartum women and young children ages 5 and under who are at risk of malnutrition. My supervisor Annie Nagy along with my mentors in the office made sure I was able to receive all of the materials and resources I would need to have a complete and successful internship.
Between my freshman and sophomore year of college I completed a 450 hour internship at All Children’s Hospital. This internship although it was mainly administrative showed me a side of hospitals that most people don’t see. I was able to see the behind-the-scenes of fundraising and public relations. I had first hand exposure to the world of fundraising for an organization that relies on fundraising. Two years later completed my bachelors of science in general business management.
Through internships I have had the opportunity work with largest medical group in western Montana, Providence Medical Group, and with The University of Montana health care center, which serves 15,000 students. I completed market research that aided wide rebranding efforts. My ability to collect and analyze market data to develop strategies and make informed decisions will be useful as I establish and maintain and update a filing system for the accounting department and assist in maintain a contact database.
I also planed to gain experienced and knowledge form volunteering at the ASANTE Ashland Community Hospital and use that understanding for future reference. By the end of my internship I’m hoping to find the right department of Nursing for me.
I am a California Department of Insurance (CDI) Licensed Agent, who poses advanced skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Large-scale Document processing. All of my hard skills will serve me well in my career path due to the fact that there is no learning curve, I am already familiar with numerous technology software and adapt quickly to change or new products. Being in the insurance business has exposed me to senior products and tools that will serve well in the Geriatric field. However, I have had no exposure to the Healthcare industry. Therefore, I would like to focus on gaining an internship in order to obtain experience in the field.
Over the course of a month, I dedicated time to volunteer with agencies that focus on providing safe and productive programs for children. Stop Child Abuse Now also known as SCAN, focuses on stopping/preventing child abuse in homes. This agency teams with many different agencies around Richmond to help parents and children coop and learn way to avoid situations of abuse. My duty for volunteering was teaming with Virginia Commonwealth University Health Services and making SCAN a known organization throughout Richmond community. VCU threw a wellness block party that included many different health services but also gave members of the community to learn and seek help with many different organizations that were there promoting their business or organization. I sat with one other girl and passed out flyers and contact information to those who were interested in the organizations. I explained to individuals what the program was about and the benefits of the program. I had one particular interaction with this young mother who explained she was in a situation where children were being abused and the authorities were notified and now she’s seeking counseling for her and the children involved. I and the other young lady volunteering with me were able to give her information on the program and also contact numbers to individuals that could help her situation. This young woman was very grateful and happy she found an organization that could assist her with her situation. From this

to experience the environment and functions of different departments in a hospital. The hospital internship has allowed me to aid patients in need and gain knowledge pertaining to the different aspects of a hospital. Upon first learning about the Health Professions Academy, engaging in a hospital
According to Nurse Journal, “healthcare management programs focuses at least 50% on health management classes and the rest are traditional business classes.”
I have some quality volunteer experience, such as rebuilding houses in New Orleans after Katrina and rebuilding houses in Joplin after the tornado. These experience helped me gain further insight on how to comfort and restore confidence in individuals who are in great need. In addition to these volunteering experiences, I have shadowed various doctors and nurses throughout the Saint Louis area. During each experience, grow more confident as well as more anxious in becoming a nurse. These shadowing occasions have granted me better understanding of how to maintain a balance between professional composer and care giving. Currently I am working at a summer camp for kids. This experience has taught me about responsibility and leadership. All experiences have contributed to an overall understanding of the medical field as well as human
I am eager to have the opportunity to apply to the University of Colorado Hospital Administrative Internship. I am currently a first year Health Administration student at the University of Missouri. I heard about this opportunity through Rick Sommers, who is our internship coordinator. My experiences throughout my undergraduate and graduate career will make me a great asset to the University of Colorado Hospital Administrative Internship team.

In my community many people do not understand the struggles of kids with serious illnesses and the financial and mental toll it has in the parents. To have more understanding of the problem I encourage people to volunteer at hospitals to gain more knowledge about the problem.
As a student in the Health Care Management program at Metropolitan State University of Denver, an internship is required before completion. Usually, the internship is fulfilled during the student’s last semester upon graduation, when they are a senior. Recently, the Health Care Management Foundations course (HCM 2500), has become a prerequisite before beginning the internship hours. A total of 150 hours are required during the internship course (HCM 4610). In order to register for HCM 4610, an internship site must be approved and locked down. This paper will discuss a potential internship program with the National Institute of Change. It will provide a brief overview of the organization’s history, the purpose of an internship, potential
