Impressionism vs. Cubism
Art, according to Webster's Dictionary, is a human skill of expression of other objects by painting, drawing, and sculpture. People have used art as a form of expression for a long time. From the Mesopotamian era to the Classical Greeks and the present. Art is expressed in many different ways and styles, and is rapidly changing, one style replacing another. Impressionism and Cubism broke away from the traditional style of painting. They were both looking for a new way to express everyday life. Time is an important tool that is used in Cubism as well as Impressionism. This element is expressed in Claude Monet's Sunrise and Pablo Picasso's Man with a Violin in different ways. It is composed of geometrical shapes, abstraction and time. There are no specific colors or objects used. Cubists were looking for a different way to express human form as well as art in general. They provided what we could almost call a God's-eye view of reality: every aspect of the whole subject, seen simultaneously in a single dimension. According to Fiero, the Cubist image, conceived as if one were moving around, above, and below the subject and even perceiving it from within, appropriated the fourth dimension-time itself. In a sense, Cubism is four-dimensional: depth, height, breath, and time, but seen all at once. It displays different viewpoints from different aspects. The object is taken and looked at in many perspectives and is represented that way on the canvas. Monet's painting Sunrise displays vivid color, which is commonly used among impressionists. The painting is of the sun rising over the lake, over looking the bay and the boats within. "Sunrise is a patently a seascape; but the painting says more about how one sees than about what one sees. It transcribes the fleeting effects of light and the changing atmosphere of water and air into a tissue of small dots and streaks of color-the elements of pure perception" (Fiero 114). This painting is typical of its style because it captures light at that moment. The sun is rising and its color is projected to everything in its path. Monet seems to capture this
The definition of art is notoriously difficult and is a field of philosophical inquiry as such. The meaning of the word "art" are multiple, sediment and cross each other in the language. Missing uses of the word are present in expressions and help to make the subject more that difficult. However, according to my studies, art is an expression, a symbolic way to communicate. Its key is to make something subject or scientific, for instance: an object that went through certain modification would be consider an art. We have a different type of arts but I will only be focusing on this tree types: prehistoric art, art of the ancient near east and art of ancient Egypt.
Impressionism is a way of painting which depicts objects using strokes and dabs of primary unmixed colours in order to simulate reflections of light. This style of painting was completely different and new at the time and both Seurat and Monet used these methods to become pivotal impressionist artists in the early 1870s.
Art-(noun)- the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
Art is a particular form of social consciousness and of human activities, an important way for people to perceive, discover and improve life: according to the laws of beauty. It is the creation of tangible or intangible products containing great values of thought-aesthetics, cultural character, and emotions. In this sense, there are numerous types of art. Painting is one of the oldest forms of art on earth. From prehistoric times, artists not only used it to communicate, but they also used painting to entertain the viewers. Painting can be transformed, eliminating the tedium, fatigue, and stress in daily tasks to bring the joy. Fun in life or silence for the soul. In other words, painting is a language that communicates an artist 's ideas
On the other hand, Vincent van Gogh did not do any cubism work during his time as an artist, however, had more of an interest in drawing. Pablo Picasso had an interest in drawing too, but unlike his work, Vincent van Gogh’s drawings are appreciated without the need for bright colours, drawings such as his depiction of figures, light and landscape. Van Gogh drew using a lot of different media, such as chalks, red pen and charcoal, although he often mixed mediums as well when it came to drawing. He drew on not just paper, but a variety of paper types, and materials. However, Van Gogh’s methods of ‘drawing’ are very different to Pablo Picasso’s.
Art has been a factor of our life as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years, art has been created, observed, critiqued, and enjoyed by human beings in many regions across the world. Art aren’t just murals, sculptures, music, books or anything that someone may define as art but more of a bigger picture like if has a deeper meaning such a message or a theme that is looked upon. Art can be viewed at as many different ways in terms of people having different reactions or observing it in a different meaning. Someone could feel that the art work is very extraordinary and unique but someone else can have a different reaction and feel like it is no different than other artworks and have a literalist view upon the art. One art that made
Both groups painted contemporary pieces, inspired by landscapes and modern life. Impressionists focused on the lighting, and the natural movement of the setting they were painting. They painted things en Plein air (in open air). In order to truly capture the essence of an image, they believed that you must be experiencing it firsthand. They started to break away from the Realist perspective, with the lack of dimension and modeling. Impressionist had a particular interest in capturing transitory moments in time. They used unique angles and thinner brush strokes to capture the visual element of being in motion. There was a bigger emphasis on the use of color in impressionist works. They used a technique in which they applied color to already wet paint, to develop the colors of the painting. This style of painting was a gateway for post- impressionism.
Art has evolved and regenerated itself many times during our human existence. These differences are defined through changes in styles under various theories. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century, a style known as Expressionism became popular. During this movement the artists were trying to use their artwork as a tool of expression toward life. It was mainly dominant in the nonrepresentational arts, such as abstract visual arts and music. It also was probably one of the most difficult movements to understand because the whole point of the piece lay within the artist. Not only was it a movement, it defined the act of art as a whole. From the beginning of time, each work of art, excluding replicas, show a way of expressing
Picasso’s Three Musicians is a prime example of Cubist style. To fully understand cubism, a person needs to understand that the subject of the artwork becomes a sequence of planes, lines, and arcs. Another aspect of Cubism art has been described as a reinvention of an artist’s analyzation of shapes. This analyzation of shapes show how artists subject and reinvent them on a canvas. The Impressioism time period was one of innovation and of new ideas. Painters become under pressure with the innovation of the light bulb, the camera and then photography industry. the middle class tended to prefer to get a photograph taken, although the photos weren't good quality, it was cheaper then to sit still for hours and paying more for a painting (sfgate). this forced painters to think out side the box and the impressionism art period was born. painters with this change also could experiment now with, not only different techniques to how they painted. they could reduce their attention to the subject matter and could now focus more on how they applied the paint as realism was not longer the ideal (britannica).
When entering the room, people crowded around Monet’s pieces, which felt like an honor to see the type and techniques his work has. The colors describe the feeling of an early morning. The painting has a muted palette of blues, greens, and grays. The sunrise is orange and yellow which are surrounded by the clouds and smoke from steamboats. Three boats are shapes and visible while the rest fade into the distance. This painting is an example of plein air or outdoor painting. I also notice that Monet layered the colors so that when I viewed the painting from a far distance I knew what the painting was about however when I looked at it up close I saw brush strokes and
Art is an object or piece of work that brings one pleasure. Art is also something you see or feel and you cannot even begin to describe the ways you like it or how it makes you feel. Art is something that portrays beauty and happiness. Art lets you see the world through another person’s perspective. Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered along the way. It lets you connect with the artist and see things through their eyes. Art is a way of expressing one’s self without words. When I think of art, I think of paintings, portraits, sketches, and sculptures.
Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary[1][1] defines art as “the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects; also, works so produced.” This definition is inclusive of most forms of art. Unfortunately, art goes far beyond this limiting sentence. Art can be thoughts, aesthetic creations, musical compositions, or choreography. Art can be seen, heard, and/or felt. Art is concrete and abstract, at the same time. Art is expression and emotion. Art is anything.
Art is the conscious creation of something beautiful or meaningful using skill and imagination, it is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power:
