Improving My Writing And Communication Skills

Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.

I think there are some areas that still needs to be improved in my writing. For example, I have always struggled with reaching the minimum length of the essays that I have written in this semester. I also need to work faster on my assignments, and mapping out a timetable would be great solution in order to finish on time.

This semester in English 1020, my writing skills have greatly improved. I used to struggle writing papers that were more than a couple pages long. Now I have learned to incorporate more information that will help lengthen my papers. My papers used to be very short, just simple five paragraph essays. I feel more comfortable now stepping away from the five paragraph format and making the paper my own.

One of the biggest things people will face is being able to complete their work, rather than find excuses not to. I would hope this is not a dilemma many of us will face, especially since getting our graduate degree requires a lot of dedication. aPy takes time and developing a good writing habit also come along with time. As you alluded to writing a draft may be a good idea, this way you can have that first draft proofread for errors. I remember when I started writing I use to have my paper proofread by the most anal person ever and even though it was frustrate the amount of errors they found it helped improve my writing. It has always been difficult for me to find a writing process that works well for me. Over the past years, I have struggled with writing papers and thinking creatively. However, I feel as if I have established a writing process that works for me.

This particular article has been of quite some help with improving my writing abilities! Do you ever find yourself rewriting instead of writing? Three strategies for improving my writing are to expand my vocabulary, proofread my work and read more than I already do. These strategies will help improve my overall quality of work. Expanding my vocabulary would be a great way to improve my writing. At this age, the majority of my writing will most likely be essays, therefore the texts I compose should be sophisticated and clear, so that I can still make my arguments, convey my ideas and get my points across in a way readers will understand.

At first when Jean (the head of the Houlton Higher Education Center) and I decided to sign up for PCJ I was kind of hesitant at first to take this class. Jean told me that the class had a lot of writing and my writing was not the best. At first I was not sure how the class would play out and or if I was going to pass it so, I decided to give to give the class a try. When the class started, I hoped to learn how better shape my writing skills.

What I want to know sixteen weeks from now (That I do not know now)

My writing skills have improved over the past months. I can proudly admit that I am a better writer than I was five months ago. Five months ago I was a terrible writer, I’m not admitting that I am as good as an Arthur now, but I can state that I am more comfortable with my writing skills at this point. I worked hard to get to the point that I'm at with my writing. I can not deny the fact that there is still room for practice and improvement in my writing because I lacks the fundamentals of writing, but I am grateful that my writing skills have improved significantly.

How often do I spend time writing? I spend very little time writing because I lack interest in and would rather text or call when communicating with others. Personally, I probably write only a few times a week which consists of writing notes to my parents if need be. I make use of the technology in which I am given since it’s available and reliable for me to use rather than writing notes. Technology and texting has ruined my writing style and ability to write in a professional manner since I use slang and abbreviations almost every day. My plan and goal is to learn how to properly write at a college level by the end of this semester.

Though English 102 is a required course for most studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, I hoped for more than just a passing grade. As a business major, I expected to improve my writing and communication skills to better prepare myself for speeches, meetings, and group projects that I will come across during not only my college education, but my professional career as well. I realize that English is essential in my everyday life and for my college classes. English 102 helped me to recognize that it is necessary to know how to construct a well written paper that reveals a purpose to a specifically chosen audience. I have learned that to communicate adequately I must know how to support multiple academic arguments, understand that it is important to incorporate others’ ideas in my own writing, and that rethinking my own ideas, rhetorical choices, and discovering other meanings are all part of the revision process. I have chosen to revise the research essay and edit my rhetorical analysis to demonstrate that I have taken these goals into consideration and was able to provide a well written essay.

Since I studied at Stamford International University, my writing skill gain a lot of improvement on many specific aspects such as grammar, critical thinking, logic, style of writing as well as the way I explore idea on the paper. On my ACP2, it was my first term to study at Stamford when I had no idea about how to create proper essay. My old knowledge of English cannot be applied at all during that time. However, after I studied for a few weeks, I became more confident when I start writing an essay. That was because I have improved my skill. After I finished the course and move toward Eng101 and Eng102, I felt that English is an interesting subject of never ending lessons to learn. Fear struck through my body like lightning instantaneously as I entered the classroom. Luckily, there were barely any students present in the classroom when I appeared. Cautiously, I walked towards the front of the classroom and sat at one of the front desks. Of course, we did introductions and this was frightening to say the least. At first I thought the class would be boring, but I was wrong. Eventually when we received our chromebooks, I was able to test my writing ability. In effect, I soon discovered my poor writing skills and I was afraid of flunking that class.
