Shaping My Writing Skills

Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.

When I first started this course I didn’t know what to expect. I really enjoyed writing but there was a lot of areas that I needed to work on. When I first started to review the modules I was blown away by all the helpful sites that were at my disposition. The Power points and different sites completely changed my whole perspective of writing to a whole new dimension. Thanks to the modules I am more confident right now before I even begin an essay. I remember in the past how beginning an essay was so difficult for me because I didn’t know how to even start. In this course I have learned how to begin an essay, how to manipulate information, and how to use in-text documentation properly. These are just some of the few things that I will definitely be taking with me in the future for my courses and personal growth.

During this spring semester, I have grown in many ways as a writer, and a student. I have started to realize, and accept the flaws that I have created in my writing. In the past, I never looked into my writings and saw my problems, and if I did, I did not accept that they were problems. In my writing pieces in the past, I was very hard-headed about what I thought was correct versus what was actually correct. I have also become More familiar with different formatting options on Microsoft Word to create a more professional piece or writing. However, figuring out all the parts of writing and making them work together is the most difficult part of writing.

I learn a lot of good ways how business perform in the real world and I my writing skills improve as well too. This class thought me that every business have to write reports and all kind emails. I learn how to use commas and proper punctuation. I am able to

Overall this process has been quite therapeutic and I luckily I was given the chance to just write. In the future, I’m not sure where my writing will take me, I might consider starting a blog and taking pictures. I think I would enjoy putting my opinions and voice out in public. This class has been amazing and it’s only the beginning. At the start of this class I was unsure if I would enjoy creative writing, but it has given me a positive outlook and I’m excited to see where life takes

One of the biggest things people will face is being able to complete their work, rather than find excuses not to. I would hope this is not a dilemma many of us will face, especially since getting our graduate degree requires a lot of dedication. aPy takes time and developing a good writing habit also come along with time. As you alluded to writing a draft may be a good idea, this way you can have that first draft proofread for errors. I remember when I started writing I use to have my paper proofread by the most anal person ever and even though it was frustrate the amount of errors they found it helped improve my writing. I am a better writer now because this class taught me to consider the readers of a document before you even start writing it. I usually just jump into writing a paper and do not consider who will be reading it. Taking the time to figure out who the readers of the document will be and considering their wants and needs was a new idea for me. Writing skill is a very important part of communication. Writing is the process to express emotions and ideas, allowing us to put them on paper. Throughout this class I have learned more than I ever thought I would. I have learned different writing techniques, such as, using vivid detail, MLA format, and how to use sources from books or websites. I was able to accomplish these skills from class exercises and writing the four assigned essays. I believe my writing skills have changed throughout this semester because I can recognize what has impacted my writing skills, along with my strengths and weaknesses.

In this paragraph I will be sharing my writing skills I have improved on throughout my first semester and goals I will be setting to keep on improving in my writing. For my past prompts and essays I have typed were great because I was slowly but surely improving on my writing. One this that for sure helped me on my prompt and pieces of writing was a site called Paper Rater. Paper Rater very much helped me on these writing pieces because it helped me on my Spelling, Grammar, Word Choice, Style, and Vocabulary Words. In Paper Rater it scores you either a A, B, C, D, OR F depending on how bright-eyed your writing came to be. Composition has helped me become a more focused individual. The lessons that I learned, have helped me not just in the classroom, but in the real world too. As I have previously stated, I work at Hy-Vee and I have improved my work ethic because of the fact that this class has taught me that the effort I put in will determine the success I will have. Overall I really enjoyed this class, at times it was hard, and at times it was stressful, but I have to say that I am grateful for the life lessons that I have learned from Mrs. Firzlaff and this

During this semester, I’ve made a lot of progress with my writing skills. I had trouble recursively engaging myself in the writing process, and using technology to complete/enhance my writing and research projects. I struggled with these because I was too afraid to ask for help due to me thinking I would seem uneducated, or people would think I didn’t know what I was doing, which was true. Overall, I was scared that my teachers would think I’m not paying attention in class and I would lose respect from them. I would also find it hard to find more reliable information, and cite it correctly to prevent my essay from being so short. I improved my weaknesses by working with my peers and asking around to help me, and look for websites that has experts and is not available for just anyone to sign in and say what they believe is valid.

There are many forms of communication. However, writing is one of the most essential form. Communication by written format provides a structure which allow one to reach an audience worldwide.

I like to consider myself a writer and often look for ways to improve upon my craft. I found Crafting an Effective Writer and was pleased with the long-term effects completing this course will have on my life. These effects will cross over all aspects of my life: personally, academically, and professionally as I view them as all being intertwined. In this class, I learned to see that the writing process does not have to be difficult. The guidelines that I have incorporated will ensure that my writing stays on track. My writing will be more focused and better organized. Following my outline will take the guesswork out of what to do next in order to complete my project. Another

Occasionally, I practice my writing skills by writing short stories. Since I am not a creative person, it’s difficult for me to come up with fresh ideas. Hopefully in college, I will be discovering many new things to gain ideas for my stories. With these ideas, I will love to write longer stories and hope to publish it one day. In the future, I will love to learn new skills and find new different words. I will also collaborate with people who have the same goal as me to help each other grow. I believe that reading and writing can bring people closer. I want people to realize that reading and writing are another way to escape the reality.

Looking back on the course, GEB3213 – Advanced Communication in Business, I have learned and implemented how to work in a team scenario as well as improved my individual writing skills. I believe that my biggest lesson learned was writing my resume. My current resume was one that I have been using for quite a while so it was very mediocre. By improving my resume based off of what I learned in this class, it now sounds more professional and clear. My favorite assignment throughout this course was the Industry Profile Report. I want to specialize in long-term care, so to dig deeper into a company that specializes in the elderly or needy adults was very intriguing.
