In two high schools, a research was done to see how to promote teachers teaching the way students learn best. This research was done over a five-year span as a class elective with hand picked students to participate with consent from parents. The two high schools were named Woodson and Northside. Each of these schools has unique aspects that the other school doesn’t have. Even though the differences were presented, the results were almost the same. The main problem of this research study was to see what schools needed to do in order to increase motivation and engagement in the classroom. The research was conducted to make the students take charge and be able to make a change in their school. With this class being an elective and an extracurricular activity it increased the power that was given to the students. Many students throughout this article felt that this class gave them a voice and they were able to make a change in their school. At Woodson, the culture of the students consisted of 70 percent of Latinos. This high school was mid-sized and was placed in a Latino community. Northside had 50 percent Chinese students, and 15 percent white students. Northside was a very large high school with just over 2500 students. To be able to attend Northside students needed to apply and go through the application process in order to accepted to attend the school. Both of these schools had an elective class that was titled YPAR, Youth-led Participating Action Research. At both
Another way to build student motivation and engagement is to give them real world problems to solve. By doing this, natural conflict arises, and students have to work together in order to resolve the conflict and continue developing a solution to the problem. When this happens, students learn so much about the problem they are trying to solve, but they also learn skills that will help them become successful in life.
Another major issue that is addressed in the article is with the teachers and their teaching styles. The method in which most teachers teach their
Engaging students in the classroom can be a difficult task. Understanding the process of how students learn can help a teacher adapt the lesson to meet the needs of all students. I will encounter students that are not intrinsically motivated so I will need to find different ways to motivate each and every student. Understanding how my students learn can provide me with insights as to how to help each student learn which will minimize classroom management problems.
There is some ethnic diversity. Most of the students are Catholic. Most of these students could be considered gifted. They all have above average intelligence and possess a variety of skills, talents, interests, and learning styles as one would expect to find in any group of teenagers. These students are highly motivated to succeed when they are challenged. They are college bound. Some of them will be attending the top universities of our country.
Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.
An important thing to keep in mind is that if you set a certain expectation for your class or for yourself, your students will attempt to reach that goal, or “will float to the mark you set” (Rose 2). “But mostly the teachers had no idea of how to engage the
The U.S. Department of Education provides supplemental funding to local school districts to meet the needs of at-risk and low-income students. This funding is known as Title 1 funding and the schools that receive a portion of this funding are referred to as Title 1 schools. Teachers in Title 1 schools encounter students facing life struggles that many of us cannot imagine. Encouraging these students to focus in school can be difficult, but it is essential to overcome the challenge in order for students to achieve academically. Finding ways to engage Title 1 students can be a daunting task due to the fact that they face daily struggles just to survive. However, teachers must use student motivation techniques to engage these students. These techniques will assist in the students’ success in the classroom. “In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education” (Hidden Curriculum, 2014).
Based on Plato's idea teachers should be like a man who left the cave and saw the real world and came back to take students' hands to see the real world. For the teachers, in order to be like that man you have an open mind, looking for a truth everywhere, and hard worker to help the students. To help students, teachers should teach them how to learn, think , and solve problems in the real life. It is not acceptable from the teachers to just give the students knowledge and ask them at the end of the school year. They should give them the key to joy the life. "Don't give me a fish, but teach me how to fish."
Schools recognise that highly effective teaching practices are the key to improving student learning. Planning and delivering sessions with differentiated outcomes and activities is particularly crucial for enabling learners with literacy, language, numeracy and ICT needs to achieve. Separating schemes of work and lesson plans will meet the individual needs, aims and experiences of learners.
The United States, beholds a unique and diverse population of academic students. However, our nation still ranks 17th in educational performance amongst other nations in the world. In my eyes this underachievement is due to the gap of knowledge towards the factors that affects teaching and learning. Teaching is a complex work because it requires a wide range of knowledge and skills( Ed Psych p.4). Educators are accountable for making sure a diverse population attains information that they are required to teach. However, with the immense structured educational system that we have in this country today there are many different approaches that instructors have to take in order to teach their students. Instructors also have to take into consideration the different learning styles students possess. Many academic instructors base their teachings methods on attempts to see high grade performances and standardized
I believe as a first grade teacher, getting students to be motivated can be achieved by setting specific classroom goals as well as personal goals for each student, continuous positive feedback, an extrinsic approach using reinforcers, and a passionate energy that maintains leadership with fun. In my years as a developing student, I can recall the teachers that brought a sense of engagement and passion to what they were teaching helped me, because their purposeful nature challenged me to hold purposeful demands for myself. I felt those teachers helped me gain a positive self-awareness and lessons that I still use in other situations throughout my life. Ultimately, my student engagement philosophy will be built upon my experiences as a student and a mother, the research of philosophers, and the guidance and experience of other teachers. Albert Bandura’s social learning theory connects my philosophy towards student management. Bandura suggested that teachers with a strong self-efficacy would engage the classroom more effectively with consistent motivation, so that the
The main goal of this project is to encourage students to break away from more traditional education. In these scenarios, the teacher is the center of the classroom and the students play a relatively small role in instruction. They simply sit, absorb information, and repeat it on summative assessments. Over the course of a school year, students end up going “a mile wide and an inch deep.” That is, they very rarely have the opportunity to dig deep into topics. Consequently, the information covered is often quickly forgotten. By putting students in charge of their education, I hope that students go “a mile deep and an inch wide.”
There are different things a teacher can do to trigger this type of motivation in students. “Some examples of
Although I have had many different types of teachers, there are two that stick out more than any others. The first was my third and sixth grade teacher. She was the best teacher I ever had. The second was my seventh grade teacher. She was the worst I think a student could have had. Both, these teachers had very different teaching styles and very different out looks on teaching. To be an effective teacher the teacher must respect the student and be willing to go the extra mile to help the students learn all they can. In this paper, I will discuss the effectiveness of these two teachers and how their teaching styles differed.
In ensuring that genuine learning transpires in the classroom, there are various issues that educators must concern their selves with. Understanding and responding to these issues require extensive knowledge of various theories in education as well as in the application of such theories. One such issue which is the focus of this paper is that on how learning occurs. Student learning is the primary goal of any academic institution, and leading students to achieve learning is the purpose of every educator. However in order for teachers to be able to lead students to learn, it is only logical to consider that teachers must know how learning actually
