During On Course by Skip Downing and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey they continue to stress using effective communication and learning so you can become a leader in your home, workplace, and community. They have many ideas on how to help you with concept, but there are four specific ideas that I believe effect this leadership concept the most. This was an example on why I personally believe that self-esteem plays a big role in being effective, because this exact situation happened to me this year in my math class. Therefore, that is why I completely agree with Downing about self-esteem and that it plays a big role in being effective. During On Course by Skip Downing and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey they talk about many different ways one can interact with other human beings. In my opinion, the best way to communicate with other human being sis Covey 's "Six Paradigms of Human Interactions" (Covey 217). I believe if one uses the six paradigms it can improve your leadership potential, and these concepts can shape you into a great leader. The first paradigm is "Win/Win" (Covey 217). This is "constantly seeking mutual benefits in all human interactions" (Covey 217). This can shape an individual into a great leader, because you would never make any one mad, and everyone would resultingly be happy. The second paradigm is "Win/Lose" (Covey 218). According to Covey, this is "the authoritarian approach" (Covey 218). To me you need this to be a good leader. The next paradigm is "Lose/Win" (Covey 220). This one is pretty much caving in and being a friend. This is a necessity when you become a leader, because you do not want to be a mean boss or have your
"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it." Dwight D. Eisenhower This quote from Eisenhower rings true on many levels. During my career in the military and the private sector, I have been subjected to many different styles of leadership, good or bad. In my leadership roles I have attained, I tried to model leadership abilities by taking bits and pieces of previous leader’s styles and forming them into my own model. This has proven to work well as dealing with people from all different walks of life there is no one size fits all approach. In writing this paper, I will detail my own leadership platform drawing from the course material and various other sources. The goal of this paper is to show a solid understanding of the course teachings and perhaps give the reader a new found perspective on leadership.
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (1989) is a business and self-help book bestseller. The work brings up that success comes from developing personal leadership, from which leadership of others can follow. I had the opportunity to participate in a
In order to have a starting point, everyone would need to start from somewhere. Therefore in order to become a leader, a leader needs to start off by example. That means that the person who wants to become a potential leader to the world or to everyone that passes his or her way needs to show off by example. Because actions speak louder than words, but still a leader needs to know how to speak. “Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, and your values become your destiny,”- Mahatma Gandhi. The first way to show a successful person is by having good grades in every single class. Especially in the classes that are difficult. It shows that he or she is able to tackle the difficult task that comes their way. After that, the person would most likely be at the top of his or her class or at least try to be head to head with the person with the highest grade in the

Content of the course- included effective communications, setting goals, decision making service leadership and many more leadership styles, and effective ways to implement change. Fifteen weeks in the Business Introduction class, I learned how to become a leader with the guidances of, “The Student Leadership Challenge:Five Practices For Becoming An Exemplary Leader”, Student Leadership self assessment, Myers Briggs Type Indicator results, and SWOT analysis. From all the readings and assessments, A leader to me is someone who is able to set a positive example to their peers but also capable of receiving feedback. Leaders make
There are many different leadership styles and different ways to learn about becoming a good and effective leader. Clark (2016) states in his article The Art of Science and Leadership “Becoming a good leader is not easy, but by learning the correct leadership skills and knowledge, putting them into practice through quality learning activities, and then adapting them to different situations, will put you well on your way to becoming a leader.” Ada Sue Hinshaw was one of the above said successful leaders of her industry.
One of the biggest lessons learned from this course is that to be an effective leader, you must have a diverse skillset. I’m not sure if there is any one magical component or characteristic in being a great leader. One influence during my review of the literature was that; although easier for some, I see leadership as something we must continually improve upon. This is in contrast to my belief during my first day of class, when I thought leaders just
According to Bass (1981) leadership can be defined in different ways: It is an act of influencing activities of an organized group in its quest to set goals and also to achieve certain goals. He also defined leadership to mean the influence that somebody exercises in a situation by means of communication in order to attain a specified goal. However in order to be a leader you require a variety of qualities. There is no one specific quality that makes one person a better leader; it’s more of a compilation of traits building an ideology as to how you as leaders handle situations. The traits I try and to reflect on as are; Self-assurance, maturity, high energy, team orientation, and charisma. As a leader I try to incorporate these traits along with the philosophy of an old Chinese Proverb; Tell me, I’ll forget, show me, I’ll remember, Involve me, I’ll understand. This reminds me that not everyone learns of understands situations the same way, I must as a leader be-able to reach the masses to have followers.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
Leadership is a very broad topic; I never knew just how many different traits and skills that it takes to become an effective leader. Some of which I was familiar with, and others that I was not aware of, but now from taking this course, they all seem to be necessary for the role of leadership. The attached paper, will explain of some of the important theories and concepts that I thought were most important to be able to become and effective leader.
I believe that developing leadership skills is not a rapid process, but it is a daily process. The best place people learn how to lead is from their daily experiences. Therefore, my job experience helped me to be more familiar with this topic and I gained additional worthy information from the class materials and lessons. Writing a biography was an amazing experience that helped me to look back in my life, review it in details, know what I did in the past and discover myself better. I did many of the book’s assessments and exercises and I found them totally thought-provoking and useful materials. They assisted me to think more about my leadership potentials and skills. Doing the exercises made me more aware of my strengths and weaknesses in the area of leadership. I read in the book about 10 qualities that mark a leader and help influence the leadership process. Those qualities listed as: vision,
From leadership theories and observations and my personal experiences, I found that leadership is a life learning process and best practices of leadership skills. Surprisingly, the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) points out that informal development opportunities, such as training, are responsible for only 10 percent of the actual learning in leadership development, and ninety percent of learning for leadership development is achieved in formal settings, mainly in everyday job activities such as development assignments and challenging tasks and interpersonal interactions at work, such as networks and mentoring relationships. Cronin and Genovese (2009) insist that what is required in leadership are three things: practice, practice, and practice. Mastery, however, requires more.
Leadership is something that can be taught (Northouse, 2015. There are some valuable theories, which will be discussed later in this paper, how a leader can develop into having a strong influence in any daily aspect of their lives. Also later in this paper it will be discussed the various styles of leaders that can affect the behaviors of the actions of each leader. Each leader can learn these attributes or some of them just have the natural capability of being a leader.
