Persuasive Speech Outline
Topic: GMOs (genetically modified organisms)
Audience: Speech class of students ranging from freshman to seniors, some may have prior knowledge of GMOs.
General Purpose: To Persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade the people to stop eating GMO’s and eat organically.
Thesis Statement: These human and environmental consequences are what lead people to eat organically. Today, there are a few points I would like to discuss with you all.
1) Introduction
A) Attention Getter - There is something that has been lurking in your food for decades. You consume it without even knowing it. It’s hidden from labels and most of the time a difference in appearance is nonexistent.
B) Reason to Listen -

This DNA can come from a multitude of places including bacteria, viruses, or other animal and plants. (“GMO Education”)
c. The World Health Organization has stated that there were two main reasons that these genetically modified organisms were created: one- so that they could be manipulated to be more herbicide resistant, and two- so that they could become more resistant to insects. (“Frequently Asked Questions on Genetically Modified Foods”)
Transition: Now that you all have a definition of what a genetically modified organism is, I want to share the human health risks associated with them, further urging you to eat organically.
B) Many studies have been done to test for health consequences from eating GMO’s and the results are startling.
a. One study was performed on a group of rats (rats and mice share 99% DNA with humans) that ate Calgene Flavr-Savr tomatoes. These GMO tomatoes were made to look fresh for longer periods of time. After 28 days, all of the rats experienced bleeding in their stomachs due to stomach lesions and seven of these rats died. (Lendman).
b. In a study explained by Stephen Lendman from Global Research, rats ate Monsanto 863 Bt Corn (one of their most famous GMO products) for 90 days. The results showed that the rats inherited multiple reactions that are associated with the body’s response to “allergies, infections, toxins, diseases like cancer, anemia and blood pressure problems” (Lendman).
c. It has even
The article contains necessary information to support why GMOs are more beneficial than harmful. The author believes that, “consumers should weigh the positives with the negatives and embrace this innovative process.” In the article, the author provides information about GMOs to be concerned about but successfully gives
Specific Purpose: At the end of my presentation, the audience will be informed on what genetically modified foods are, where they are found, and some of the controversial advantages, and disadvantages that are associated with them.
First, we are going to take a bite into what GMO’s are and why then are used
Preview your Main Points: GMO’s have put millions of people around the world at serious health risks in order to gain the benefit of economic success. Unknown reactions from genetically modified food seem to be overlooked by many.
SPECIFIC SPEECH GOAL: I would like to increase the audience’s knowledge of genetically modified foods, their history, and the controversy that it involves.
Genetically Modified Organisms are organisms that are infused with DNA extracted from another organism, which can come from plants, animals and even human genes. Although many companies have decided that buyers of their products do not need to be informed on the dangers of genetically modified organisms, consumers deserve to be informed by product labeling because the unnatural production of consumable products can, and will create detriments to our bodies, our environment and other living things.
GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. The GMO debate has a huge gap just like the climate change’s ambiguous debate. Some people are for the consumption of it and have as arguments that GMOs will feed the future population of the world that is expected to double in the few years to come, or that scientists can build stronger crops that resist to pests, therefore less use of pesticides. Some are against these ideas because they think that GMOs represent a threat to the environment and that they can cause a lot of health problems. The goal of this paper is to look at two articles “The GMO Debate is Over Again” by Mark Lynas and" Seeds of Evil: Monsanto and Genetic Engineering" by Dr. Joseph Mercola, and see where the use rhetorical strategies are effective and where they are not.
GMO’s contain inherent health risks such as digestion issues, increased allergic reactions, and infertility. This should
Perhaps the most controversial element of the ongoing GMO debate involves the potential health risks to those that consume them. Dr.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience all about GMO’S in food, including the positive and negative effects they have on us and society.
Recently, there has been multiple studies regarding whether or not GMOs are safe for human and animal consumption, and the results are extremely negative (“5 Reasons NOT to Eat Genetically Modified Foods”). From these tests, researchers have found birth defects, sterility, organ damage, gastrointestinal disorder, gut rot, new allergies, accelerating aging, infertility and immune system disorder in rats (“Smith”, “5 Reasons NOT to Eat Genetically Modified Foods”). These tests are not only done on rats. Glyphosate, a substance in Roundup, caused “total cell death in human umbilical, embryo, and placental cells within twenty-four hours” (“5 Reasons NOT to Eat Genetically Modified Foods”). Therefore, Genetically Modified Organisms have been proven to be extremely dangerous to our health. Lastly, “After GMOs were introduced in 1966, the percentage of Americans with more than three chronic illnesses went from seven percent to thirteen percent in nine years” (“Smith”). Additionally, “food allergies skyrocketed, and disorders like autism, reproductive disorders, and digestive problems are on the rise” (“Smith”). Genetically Modified Organisms cause extreme damage on our bodies and should be banned.
people consume modified food, their immune system goes down and they tend to get sick. GMO
According to Lois N. Magner, Professor Emerita at Purdue University, there are risks involving the consumption of foods that contain genes that are foreign (129). These GM crops are inserted with a gene that produces a “naturally occurring” pesticide, Bacillus Thuringiensis, which is “toxic to certain pests” (129). One might be eased by the words “naturally occurring” however that gene does not originally appear in that specific pant. Therefore, we do not know how it will affect that organism as a whole. It is important to note that “when people eat these GM foods they ingest the pesticide” (129). “In March 2015, the World Health Organization determined that the herbicide glyphosate (the key ingredient in Roundup®) is “probably carcinogenic to humans”(“GMO Facts”). If the plants are toxic, and the animals are eating these toxic plants, they too become toxic. Nevertheless, we humans eat both plants and animals, doubling the consumption of pesticides. Both Magner and the “NON-GMO” project state that there is no evidence or enough research to claim that “GMO” are safe because human health effects across a lifetime have not been examined. However, animal studies have shown GM foods linked with “organ damage, immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility (Magner pg). Ever since these products were increased health problems have been on the rise. This is extremely worrying as we do not know
In recent years, Genetically Modified Organics (GMO 's) have shown up in our supermarkets at and increasingly alarming rate. From vegetables to fish, every type of organic is at risk of GMO modification, but what effects will these GMO 's have on the human body? Although research is still ongoing, multiple sources have determined that GMO 's are in fact harmful to the human body, and not in just one way. Furthermore, because of the negative health impacts, "a number of countries have completely banned GMO 's and the pesticides that go along with them, and they are doing so for a reason. The latest country to consider a complete ban is Russia after top government scientists recommended at least a 10-year ban" (DeLaCruz). Despite these
Much of the public concern surrounding the safety of GMOs stems from the process of actually creating them. This is admittedly not a natural process, which is a surefire way to raise critic’s eyebrows in doubting their safety. However, there is no evidence that supports these myths. The Committee on Genetically Engineered Crops, The National Academy of Science, and the Board on Agriculture and Natural Recourses all agree after extensive testing and observation that there is no additional harm in the consumption of GMO food. The research conducted in animal studies, as well as chemical analysis of the crops, show no indication that GMOs are negatively affecting human health. The next allegation hurled at GMOs is that they may have
