Overview The animated film Inside Out directed by Pete Doctor is about the change in emotions due to stress, and how the brain changes with age. The film is about the mind of an 11-year old girl named Riley, who is trying to remain happy with the family move from Minnesota to San Francisco. Once the family arrives in San Francisco, a series of events happen that make her upset or disappointed. However, she tries her best to please her parents by pretending to be happy. The movie also highlights the function of short and long-term memory, and the psychological changes in becoming a pre-teen. The major characters in the film were the personification of her emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger. These five personifications worked together to allow Riley to function, and express how she is feeling (Doctor & Carmen, 2015). Pre-Adolescent Female Brain During the pre-adolescent years, the brain is under major construction, but still is able to process information, and make firm decisions based on emotions. In addition, when a child gets older, their personality evolves, and their relationships with others grow and change. In the film, Riley’s actions were determined by her emotion at that moment, which impacted her relationship with her parents and best friend. Also, Riley’s personality evolved when she got older. Inside out is a disney cartoon film directed by Pete Docter. It follows the story of a preteen girl named Riley and her emotions that are represented as characters in the film, with an angle of “meeting the little voices inside your head”. Representing the five major emotions are the characters Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear, who take us on a journey through the brightly coloured, amazing, exhilarating wonderland of Riley’s mind, conquering many troubles along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and found that although aimed at a younger audience I think it touches on very relevant topics that are essential for life, such as individuality and acceptance of others, that are both resourceful and important for everyone of all ages to know and learn about making it an appealing and enjoyable film for all.
The film Inside Out tells the story of a young girl named Riley and her changing emotions after she is forced to move from her home town in Minnesota to San Fransico for her father’s job. The story is told from the perspective of her five emotions. Riley’s emotions are led by Joy, who attempts to guide her through the stressful event. Although Joy puts forth great effort, Sadness takes over. When trying to protect Riley’s core memories from Sadness, Joy is swept from headquarters through the dump tube and Sadness follows. With Joy and Sadness gone, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are the only emotions left in headquarters; therefore, Riley cannot be happy or sad. Because Joy and Sadness are absent, Riley’s personality islands diminish one by one. Riley fights with her family, pushes away from her friends back home, and loses interest in hockey. As Joy and Sadness navigate through Riley’s brain in search of a way back to headquarters, they encounter many obsticles. Back in headquarters, Anger, Fear, and Disgust place the idea of running away into Riley’s head. Joy witnesses the transformation of a sad memory into a happy memory, and finally realizes the importance of all emotions, including Sadness. With the help of Bing Bong, Riley’s imaginary friend, Joy and Sadness find their way back to headquarters and are able to stop Riley from running away. There are many ways to determine the meaning of happiness, the most important being the presence of sadness. Over the course of time, sadness has gotten a bad reputation in a sense that if someone if feeling sad, they must be weak or depressed. Truly understanding people have learned that when life gets difficult, one must handle their mental state in a healthy way and seek help or an outlet. The people who are unaware of this, may later become obsessed with a happier past time, and live the present in wistful manner. Pixar’s film, Inside Out, addresses our relationship to our feelings in a sophisticated way for adults and kids to understand and enjoy. Joy, Anger, Disgust, Sadness, and Fear, the five emotions that dwell in the inner world of a young girl named Riley. Joy is the team leader and she displays compassion and demonstrates the aspect of her that permits her to be happy. Anger is very passionate about making sure things work out fairly for Riley. Disgust is highly opinionated and tries to protect her from poisonous situations whether physically or socially. Sadness was used to signal when Riley needed comfort and support. Finally, Fear, he is always on the lookout and I used to protect her. All five of the emotions contribute to build up Riley’s personality. She is upbeat, honest, cheerful, somewhat neurotic, etc.
From start to finish, the audience watches Riley grow from a newborn baby into a blossoming twelve year old girl. One of the first developmental processes that appears is the aspect of easy temperament (256). Riley is a joyous little girl who promotes an excited and positive attitude quite constantly. The first portrayal of anger comes at the dinner table, but it is quickly deterred by a quick airplane technique that grasp the attention of the young toddler. The positive outlook and generally cheerful attitude is a slight but insightful indicator of an easy temperament child (256). Her entire disposition throughout the entire film stays majoritily positive. As we will later see in the upcoming paragraphs, proper parenting and emotional responses help lead to the easy and positive temperament of Riley.

We watch these emotions interact with each other and find out what can happen when certain emotions take over the mind in specific situations. The main character of “Inside Out” is the emotion representing Joy, she is the leader and tries to keep the other emotions in control. Joy is very positive and upbeat and works very hard to keep Riley happy at all times. The emotions watch and guide Riley by influencing how she reacts to different daily situations. The only thing the emotions are not prepared for however, is an unexpected move from Minnesota to San Francisco (Inside Out). This hilarious take at how our brains work allows Inside Out to create an entertaining and engaging movie using character interaction and its deeper emotional and psychological meanings.
Do you ever look at someone and wonder, "What is going on inside their head?" This is the first question asked in animated film, Inside Out, and its director Pete Docter’s mind after noticing his daughter’s personality changing as she grew up. Using his daughter as inspiration, Pete Docter pitched the idea to Pixar studios where it was picked up immediately for production in 2009. He consulted with numerous child psychologists to create the movie about 11 year old girl, Riley Anderson, moving from Minnesota to San Francisco and her personified emotions to guide her through. Because Pixar’s movies are family friendly, the film’s crew cleverly used color and creative mise en scene to tell the elaborate story between Riley’s mind, the world around her, and other character’s personality traits.
Had I watched this Inside Out at different points over the semester, I would have been able to find different flaws each time. This movie is supposed to be about Riley, but it turns out to be centered around the journey that Joy and Sadness must take in order to return to headquarters, more specifically, it validates sadness as an emotion. Sadness spent her first eleven years with Riley being told to stay back and not to screw anything up, in reality, sadness is often frowned upon, because for some people, they are the opposite of Riley’s character. This movie shows that the happiest of children can go through life changing struggles and embrace their other emotions. You cannot appreciate being happy unless you have known being sad, this movie brings attention to the necessity of a balance in life.

In analyzing Riley Andersen through the psychosocial theory of development, it is important to understand what is going on in her life throughout the events of the film. The psychosocial theory “addresses growth across the life span, identifying and differentiating central issues from infancy to elderhood” (Newman & Newman, 2014, p. 62). In the beginning of the film, Riley is 11 years old and is in the Middle Childhood life stage (6-12 years old). The developmental tasks during this stage include friendship, concrete operations, skill learning, self-evaluation, and team play (Newman & Newman, 2014). As seen in the film, Riley is a social child with many friends while living in Minnesota. She is a successful member of a hockey team, and is able to relate to others in a positive manner. It appears that Riley has successfully accomplished the developmental tasks associated with Middle Childhood. When Riley moves to San Francisco, she is forced to restart these developmental tasks with a brand-new group of peers. Although she tries to connect with other students in her new classroom, she struggles with making friends and can only think of getting back to her old friends in Minnesota. She also

The film explains that our brain has functions that control our responses to certain situations, and the ways that we handle these situations are controlled by our emotions. Also, it explains that our personalities and identities are defined by certain emotions, which shape how we handle and express to specific situations. The decisions and actions that the emotions choose to do in Riley’s life will drive the plot.
